Nokian Introduces Hakka Green Summer Line-Up

Nokian has launched a new summer tyre range, the Hakka Green. The Finnish tyre maker describes the Hakka Green as a tyre that “uniquely combines the needs of drivers on northern roads” and can reliably deal with all summer conditions, whether it be hot roads, wet weather conditions or late autumn’s steadily cooling weather. Green credentials for the tyre are earned through “extremely low” rolling resistance; Nokian says it is 15 per cent lower than that of its predecessor, the Hakka H. This equals a decrease in fuel consumption of almost three per cent, and Nokian adds that fuel savings in comparison with “average” summer tyres is some five to eight per cent.

‘Weltmeister’ at Last – Thanks to Conti

Germany’s World Cup aspirations may have crumbled in a one-nil defeat at the deft and athletic hands of Spain in July, but the country has nevertheless gone on to achieve its own global football victory. On September 19, some two months after the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa drew to a close, the men’s team from Continental’s Korbach factory in the German province of Hesse emerged victorious in the ContiTeamCup 2010 after defeating Brazil by three goals to nil. In the women’s league Germany had to settle for second place, however, following a one-nil loss to Mexico.

European OE Truck Tyre Market Swells, PCR Slips in August

Market data released by Michelin shows the European original equipment market for passenger car and light commercial vehicle tyres to have dropped 10.0 per cent year-on-year during August. Sales of these products have in the year to date increased 18.6 per cent in Europe, and our region was the only of the three reported markets to have suffered a decline; the North American OE market for passenger car and light truck tyres grew 34.0 per cent during August, while the China market increased 12.7 per cent. Both of these monthly results are lower than year to date growth figures, which for North America and China are 61.8 per cent and 40.5 per cent respectively.

Bridgestone Celebrates F1 Partnership in Monza

With 14 years of tyre supply soon to end, Bridgestone Europe celebrated its Formula One partnership at its final race within the region. On September 10, during the Italian Grand Prix weekend, more than 170 guests from Formula 1 racing teams, the press and Bridgestone companies attended the Paddock Club event, the centre piece of which was a question and answer session with leading F1 personalities including Bridgestone past and present champions Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button. Racing team principals Martin Whitmarsh of Vodafone McLaren Mercedes, Ross Brawn of Mercedes GP Petronas and Stefano Domenicali of Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro joined the drivers on stage while a host of fellow team principals and senior team management also added their weight to the occasion.

Conti Sees Stagnant Car Production in Europe, US

Continental AG says automobile production in Europe and the US will remain stagnant next year, which is why it is stepping up expansion in Asia. The tyre and auto part maker said growth in emerging markets like China, India and Indonesia is important to its continued success.

Grouptyre Launches Latest Pirelli Promotion

Following on from two highly successful national incentives held in conjunction with Pirelli this year, Grouptyre has announced a further promotion. This latest promotion will run from October 1 and November 30 and once again aims to build retail sales through the independent sector. Tyre retailers and auto servicing businesses will be entered into a prize draw based on the number of Pirelli car, van and 4×4 tyres bought from their local Grouptyre member during the promotion period. Winners of the two top prizes will enjoy a VIP trip to Italy, including a visit to Maranello, the base for Ferrari’s GT car production and home to the Ferrari Formula One team.

Kwik-Fit Pledges Additional Training Funds Following Watchdog Attack

Kwik-Fit has promised to direct an additional million pounds into staff training and double its mystery shopper programme after the BBC One show ‘Watchdog’ aired both its own experience with the fast fit chain and those of several unsatisfied customers. The September 16 edition of Watchdog outlined cases in which Kwik-Fit quoted for repair work that wasn’t required and performed vehicle inspections that didn’t deliver all that was promised.

Stats Show Dangerous Tyre Convictions on the Rise

When the Ministry of Justice releases data on driving convictions for 2009 on October 21 we will finally get to see whether or not a shameful trend has been reversed. The most recently available information shows a total of 4,317 drivers were successfully prosecuted by courts in England and Wales for driving on defective tyres during 2008, an increase of 14 per cent on the previous year. This information was released by the Ministry of Justice in response to a parliamentary question by Stoke-on-Trent MP, Tristram Hunt and shows the figure to be at a seven-year high, up from a low of 3,595 convictions in 2006.

Conti to Establish Production at Leased Romanian Site

According to Romanian news source Bursa, Continental has leased a hangar from Schaeffler in the town of Braşov and intends to establish a production site employing up to 1,800 workers there. This year the German company intends to invest 70 million euros in Romania, where it already operates eight factories, three research facilities and a central warehouse for Eastern Europe. Recently the company stated its intention to invest some 50 million euros in the mixing facilities at its Timişoara factory by 2012 in order to increase production capacity.

TRIB’s Harvey Brodsky to Address Italian Retreading General Assembly

Harvey Brodsky, managing director of TRIB, the Tire Retread & Repair Information Bureau, is to appear as a featured speaker at the general assembly of the Italian Tyre Retreaders Association (the Associazione Italiana Ricostruttori Pneumatici, or AIRP) in Rome on October 8 and 9. TRIB says that Brodsky’s presentation will highlight the current situation of the North American retreading industry in comparison with that in Italy and other parts of the world.

Trelleborg Introduces ‘Unique’ Production Technology at Enlarged Solid Tyre Plant

The consolidation of Trelleborg’s solid industrial tyre capacity in Sri Lanka has taken a further step forward with the opening of the enlarged Trelleborg Wheel Systems plant outside the city of Colombo. The company estimates that approximately 80 per cent of its total global solid industrial tyre production now is now carried out in Sri Lanka, a country it says is a “natural location” for it to consolidate production as it has an “excellent” raw materials infrastructure.

Grosjean Confirmed to Fill Heidfeld’s F1 Shoes at Pirelli

When testing of Pirelli’s Formula One tyres continues in Monza next week, former Renault F1 driver Romain Grosjean will take Nick Heidfeld’s place behind the wheel of the Toyota TF109 being used for pre-season tyre development. Heidfeld has been released from his contract with Pirelli following the announcement that he will drive for Sauber Motorsport for the remainder of the 2010 season.

Bridgestone Restructuring European Organisation

A desire to provide customers with a more efficient and professional service is the given reason behind Bridgestone Europe’s decision to restructure its organisation. A series of changes have been planned and Bridgestone is already working at introducing these; the company aims to have the restructured organisation fully operational by January 1, 2011. Significant changes to be implemented include the division of responsibility for sales functions into six geographical regions, each with its own regional headquarters that will operate under the overall control of Bridgestone’s European headquarters in Brussels. A reorganisation will also be undertaken at the Brussels headquarters; Bridgestone says this should result in better operational support being given to the regional sales companies in specialised areas.

Continental 360° Fleet Services Launched in the UK

On 14 September Continental Tyres Ltd gave Conti 360° Fleet Services its official UK launch. Sharp eyed Tyres & Accessories readers will have spotted news of the European launch of this programme on tyrepress.com back in February as well as in March’s magazine. Seven months later, the UK launch revealed further details of how this will be rolled out across the UK and Europe and how the British ContiNetwork model gave the impetus for what is now know as the Conti 360° Network.

Dates first. Despite being initially announced as operational as early as February this year, the official launch of Conti 360° Fleet Services was – as we can see in mid-September, however the big UK switch-on in is scheduled for October. The Republic of Ireland will join the ranks of the programme with it own independent dealer network – a first for Continental Eire – being launched in November.

Crumb Rubber Myths Put to Test at TIA Symposium

At the upcoming TIA Environmental Symposium, Mike Wezel, vice president of sales and marketing for Liberty Tire Recycling, will debunk myths about crumb rubber, its uses and its safety, reports Tire Review. The Environmental Symposium will be held 30 September-2 October at the Ocean City Convention Center in Ocean City, Md.
