Yokohama HPT Introduces A005 Radial Tyre for UK’s Sports2000 Series

The UK distributor for Yokohama tyres, Yokohama HPT, has announced the introduction of a new specification race tyre to the UK. The A005, developed for the Sports2000 race series, replaces the now discontinued bias tyre used by the series. Sports2000 has exclusively used Yokohama tyres, supplied by George Polley Motorsport, for 25 years, up to and including 2010. The series is based on sports prototype-style single seaters, using either the Ford Pinto or Duratec engine and its value and fun-conscious approach means huge grids every season.

IRSG Chief to Open “Largest” Tyrexpo Asia

Tyrexpo Asia 2011 organiser ECI International has announced that the event’s eighth staging in Singapore will be opened officially by Dr Stephen Evans, secretary general of the International Rubber Study Group (IRSG). The Singapore-based IRSG provides statistical data and analysis for all aspects of the rubber industry. In opening the show, Evans will follow in the footsteps of his predecessor at the IRSG, Dr Hidde Schmidt, who performed a similar role at the opening of Tyrexpo Asia in 2009. ECI says the show will be the largest in terms of exhibitor numbers in the 15-year history of the event when it opens its doors from 29-31 March, 2011.

Di Grassi Rumoured to Replace de la Rosa in Pirelli F1 Seat

Lucas di Grassi is rumoured in motorsport news sources to be the new Formula One test driver for sole tyre supplier Pirelli. Di Grassi spent last season driving for the newly-established Virgin team, but lost his 2011 seat to Jerome d’Ambrosio of Belgium.

Nexen Setting Up European Technology Centre

Korean tyre manufacturer Nexen is in the process of establishing a European Technical Centre in Frankfurt/Höchst, Germany. The company says that the Centre underscores its efforts to establish itself further on the European market. Two experienced tyre specialists and developers have been involved with the interface between Europe and Korea since the beginning of the year – engineer Hee-Jong Lee and Dr. Hendrik Stevens.

Nexen Given Design Award for N8000 and Winguard Sport

The iF Product Design Award 2011 has been awarded to two tyres made by the Korean manufacturer Nexen. The N8000 UHP summer tyre and the Winguard Sport winter tyre prevailed from a field of 2,756 products from 1,121 registered participants in 43 countries. John Bosco Kim, managing director of Nexen Tyre Europe, hailed the win of the iF product design award in a statement: “For us, design prizes are among our most important distinctions.

Tyrereviews.co.uk Awards Conti 2010 Brand of the Year

Tyrereviews.co.uk has presented its awards for 2010, making Continental its Brand of the Year. The growing consumer review website, which compiles information on the year’s major tyre tests and buying guides in addition to user-generated opinions and scores, said that “Continental have been near unstoppable in 2010. Of the 11 tyre tests entered, Continental won 6 of them. Where Conti didn’t win, they placed in the top 3 positions, a truly astounding run.” The site also made Conti’s SportContact 5P Performance Tyre of the Year; Pirelli’s P7 Cinturato was Touring Tyre of 2010; Dunlop’s Winter Sport 3D was made the site’s Winter Tyre of the Year; while Hankook’s Ventus S1 Evo was made the site’s number one Mid Range Tyre. Michelin also picked up a gong for Launch of the Year after its unveiling of the Pilot Super Sport (covered in the December 2010 edition of Tyres & Accessories).

Toyo Scores OE Fitment on Audi Q7

Toyo Tire has announced that its Toyo Open Country W/T tyre has been chosen by Audi as original equipment tyres for its Q7. Commencing in January 2011, the Open Country W/T (AO) in size 255/55R18 109H will be fitted to the Q7, also supplied on 18” rims where winter tyres are ordered.

Apollo Becomes Kwik-Fit “House Brand” in The Netherlands

Apollo Tyres has announced a deal with Kwik-Fit to sell its tyres throughout the fast-fitter’s 180 car service centres across The Netherlands. Apollo’s entire summer and winter range of passenger car and 4×4 tyres will be available from Kwik-Fit. Martin Post, general director at Kwik-Fit, said, “Apollo is a trendy brand that suits the character of Kwik-Fit. We very much look forward to offering our customers quality tyres from Apollo.”

Maxxis to Sponsor Team Japspeed

In addition to its role as title sponsor of the Maxxis British Drift Championship, tyre manufacturer Maxxis International has announced its sponsorship of Team Japspeed. The deal will continue a successful relationship that began in 2009, in which driver Steve Biagioni won the British Drift Championship using the Maxxis MA-Z1 Drift tyre.

Pirelli Seeks 2011 Spec F1 Car to Continue Tyre Development

Pirelli is seeking the chance to test its Formula One tyre on a 2011 season specification model, in order to continue to refine its tyres for its first season as exclusive tyre supplier. The manufacturer has thus far run its development tyres on a 2009 Toyota, acquired from the team following its exit from the series at the end of that season.

JK Tyre Q3 Net Profit Down Three-Quarters

India’s JK Tyre has posted net profits for its third quarter ending 31 December, 2010 of 90.14 million rupees, a year-on-year reduction of 74.93 per cent on the 360.46 million rupees posted in the same quarter at the end of 2009. “It was a very challenging quarter as the prices of natural rubber have increased 100 per cent, attaining unprecedented levels. Other raw materials have also registered a sharp increase of nearly 40 per cent,” stated JK Tyre & Industries vice chairman & managing director Raghupati Singhania.

Japanese Tyre Machinery Manufacturer Forms Indian JV

Japan’s Kobe Steel has formed a joint venture with India’s Larsen & Toubro Limited to manufacture and sell tyre production machinery in India. Called L&T Kobelco Machinery Private Ltd., the joint venture will make rubber mixers and twin-screw rollerhead extruders used in manufacturing tyres. Plans call for construction of the plant to begin in February 2011 and production to begin in October 2011. Approximately 500 million rupees (900 million yen) will be invested in the facility.

CGS Tires Changes Name to Mitas Tires North America

Alongside its decision to build a tyre plant in Charles City, Iowa, CGS Tires US Inc., the US subsidiary of Czech-based CGS Tyres, has changed its corporate name to Mitas Tires North America Inc, reports Tire Review. When the new plant is ready, the renamed company will relocate its US headquarters from Charlotte, North Carolina, to Charles City, Iowa.

Nankang Reports “Record Sales” in 2010

Nankang Rubber Tire representatives have reported an increase in sales of 28.7 per cent in 2010, making it “a record year” for the company. Despite the appreciation of the Taiwan new dollar’s exchange rate, Nankang says it achieved a 28.7 pr cent increase in operating income year-on-year, having reached figures of 13,618,253 thousand Taiwan dollars (£468.9 million) in comparison with 10,581,829 thousand Taiwan dollars (£364.7 million) in 2009.

Riccardo Cichi Becomes President of Pirelli Canada

Riccardo Cichi has been named president of Pirelli Canada. Hired at Pirelli Canada in 1989 as market analyst, Cichi moved to Pirelli Tire North America in 1992 as operations director. He was later promoted to marketing director and then vice president of sales and marketing for the US and Canada. Departing Pirelli Canada president Marco Zambiachi has taken on new executive responsibilities with PTNA at its New York City offices. (Tire Review)
