Conti ‘delighted’ with evo winter test result

Date: 14th February 2013 Author: Tyrepress Editors Comments: 0

For those of you who missed evo’s recent winter tyre test, Continental wishes to point out that its ContiWinterContact TS850 came out on top. Eight size 205/55R16 winter and all-season tyres – and one Continental summer tyre – were jointly evaluated by evo tester John Barker and testers from Auto Express. Evo found the TS850 to be “responsive, stable and predictable in all scenarios” and said “winter tyres come no more capable or reassuring that this.”

Scoring a total of 372.9 points out of a possible 400 in a range of tests that covered wet and dry performance, snow conditions and other braking, snow and criteria such as rolling resistance, noise and price, the TS850 was particularly praised for its snow and wet performance.

“We are delighted to have been commended by evo yet again,” commented Continental brand manager Peter Robb. “The ContiWinterContact TS850 has taken the winter market by storm. In a string of tyre tests in Europe, the tyre has consistently beaten the best to take top spot.”

In second place was Michelin’s Alpin A4, which scored a total of 370 points, and the Dunlop SP WinterSport 4D secured third position with 365.1 points. In eighth position out of the nine tyres was another Continental tyre – this time the Continental Premium Contact 2 summer tyre. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the summer tyre topped the dry tests but didn’t keep pace with its winter-specific cousins in the snow; what may raise a few eyebrows is that it scored higher in the wet, snow and miscellaneous categories as the last-placed winter tyre, the Linglong Winter Hero Radial 650 – a tyre that also ranked a lowly 37 from 42 in the 2012 winter tyre braking test conducted by Germany’s Auto Bild.

As previously mentioned, evo conducted the winter tyre test together with Auto Express. The TS850 also topped the test partner’s table, however the Michelin Alpin A4 was relegated to fourth place in the Auto Express test, replaced as runner-up by the fourth-place holder in the evo test, the Goodyear UltraGrip 8.
