Continental consolidates tyre warehousing at Czechia tyre plant

As part of measures to centralise warehousing in the local area, Continental has officially opened a fully automated high-bay warehouse at the site of its tyre production plant in Otrokovice, Czech Republic. This 10,000 square metre, 43-metre-high facility – approximately as tall as the Statue of Liberty – has the capacity to store more than 930,000 tyres.
“With our fully automated warehouse, we once more improve our logistics processes. We can serve our customers even faster, while further reducing our CO2 footprint,” explains Dr Bernhard Trilken, head of Manufacturing and Logistics at Continental Tires, during the facility’s inauguration. “Sustainable logistics is one key to a resource-efficient and environmentally friendly supply chain.”
Continental is working to systematically reduce the environmental footprint of its logistics operations. The tyre maker explains that to achieve this, it “integrates innovative technologies, optimises storage capacities, and routes and uses renewable energies to manage scarce resources as efficiently as possible.”
High racks with small aisles allow vertical and horizontal storage. Mobile stackers automatically move the tyres stored on pallets around the warehouse area. Continental obtains the electricity it uses to power the warehouse from renewable sources, working in accordance with the criteria of the global RE100 initiative, as the company has done at all production facilities worldwide since late 2020.
“Continental consistently invests in the digitalisation and automation of its global manufacturing operations at its 20 tyre plants in 16 countries worldwide,” says the company. “The focus lies on research and development of new technologies, alternative materials, environmentally friendly production as well continuous improvements of the overall efficiency of logistics processes.” By 2050 at the latest, Continental aims to achieve 100 per cent climate neutrality along its entire value chain.
