Independent Garage Association offers websites

The Independent Garage Association (IGA) is offering to help its members set up websites in order to increase trade. Stuart James, RMI IGA Director, explained: "Offering our members a website is helping to bring additional business into their workshops and is an opportunity to market their garage to the modern consumer."

A recent IGA survey discovered that thousands of garages are missing out on one of the most effective, efficient and up-to-date ways of promoting their business due to not having a website.

Following last month’s “Panorama” which covered issues relating to illegal tyre dumping, you could be forgiven for thinking this column has gone a bit “Radio Times.” It hasn’t, but it seems tyres are getting far more than their 15 minutes of fame this summer. While last month’s piece looked at the pros and cons of the BBC’s, shall we say, variable TV coverage (which leapt from theme to theme apparently without fully thinking through the lack of linkage between them), this time it was the turn of radio.

India’s tyre sector heavily affected by import duty structure – survey

According to business association the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), tyre manufacturing in India is one of the sectors most affected by what it calls ‘inverted customs duty structure’. Results of a FICCI survey show the tyre sector, along with several others, are most keenly disadvantaged by the structure of India’s import duties, which charge higher duties for imported raw materials than for imported finished products.

HiQ survey suggests some young drivers swerve services

HiQ says that the results of its latest car maintenance habits survey suggest that young motorists are putting themselves at risk by failing to take their cars in for annual services. The fast fit network cites not being able to afford the cost or ignorance of the concept of an annual service as the main reasons for this trend. 34 per cent of 500 drivers questioned opted against paying for a service, relying instead on their cars passing their MOTs in a penny saving measure. 57 per cent of those deciding against a service were drivers aged between 17 and 30, suggesting that the trend is rife amongst younger motorists.

TyreSafe: Tyre convictions ‘alarmingly high’

The number of motorists driving with defective tyres remains at a “dangerous and worrying level, warns TyreSafe, commenting on figures recently released by the Ministry of Justice. The statistics reveal 9,639 people were convicted of driving with dangerous or defective tyres at Magistrates courts in England and Wales in 2011.

Road Safety Markings Association is set to carry out the UK’s biggest survey of the state of white lines. From 16 July and throughout August, more than 6,000 miles of roads in England, Scotland and Wales – including the UK’s ten most dangerous roads identified by the Road Safety Foundation – will be assessed for the quality of their central white lines.

TPMS rendered useless by apathetic component

Kwik Fit has identified a weak link in the tyre pressure monitoring systems fitted to modern vehicles – and that weak link is, it appears, you and I. The retail network commissioned a study to investigate motorist responses to vehicle warning lights – and discovered that almost a half of all drivers don’t know what a tyre pressure warning light means.

RMA survey – the US is an underflation nation

Much is said about the so-called ‘special relationship’ Britain shares with the United States, and surveys carried out by the US-based Rubber Manufacturers Association shows that our affinity extends to mutual apathy when it comes to tyre care. The RMA surveys produced similar results to studies conducted by TyreSafe and other organisations on this side of the pond; the industry association found that only about one in six vehicles boast four correctly inflated tyres and only 15 per cent of drivers actually know how to properly check tyre pressure.

Fuel economy most important car consideration to Americans

With fuel prices at near-record levels, US consumers are driving less and contemplating a move to smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles, according to recent survey by Consumer Reports. Tire Review reports that the survey found that 37 per cent said their leading consideration when shopping for their next car will be fuel economy. A distant second was quality (17 per cent) followed by safety (16 per cent), value (14 per cent) and performance (6 per cent).

Bridgestone research reveals driver cut backs

A survey of British motorists found that almost two thirds of drivers are opting to leave their cars behind to travel by other means in order to save money, Bridgestone UK research has revealed. The research, commissioned by the tyre manufacturer, found that 65 per cent of people have stopped using their car so often in an effort to save money and 67 per cent are encouraging their families to walk more as part of a wider cost cutting exercise.

Many UK motorists stumped by a flat, shares Kwik-Fit

After reading the facts unearthed by the latest Kwik Fit survey, you’d be forgiven for wishing some British motorists stuck to public transport. The study of 2,027 adults carried out for the fast fit network shows that four per cent of respondents – a proportion representing 1.3 million British motorists – don’t even know if their vehicle has a spare wheel. Three per cent – think a million motorists – confessed to not having any provision whatsoever for a flat tyre.

Hankook survey shows strong US interest in eco-tyres

According to the results of Hankook Tire America’s “Spring Gauge Index”, 61 per cent of drivers in the US would be interested in buying eco-friendly tyres. The main reason for making such a purchase is the potential fuel savings they’d deliver; Hankook’s study shows that 68 per cent of drivers who’d buy eco tyres gave this reason as their motivating factor.

Online tyre retail still a growing market, says Delticom report

Over in Germany, online tyre retailer Delticom commissioned research company Forsa to study consumer attitudes to buying tyres online. Forsa surveyed 1,000 German potential tyre purchasers, aged 18 to 65 years, and noted that acceptance towards online tyre purchases is still growing.

Bosch Car Service holds first Irish garage conference

The Bosch Car Service network has held its first conference in Ireland. The network says the event is designed to help independent garages get the most from the scheme’s many benefits, with a day of workshops, training sessions and talks for garages signed up to the Bosch Car Service network.

Accolade for BEN

Automotive Charity BEN has been awarded a 2-star rating in the Sunday Times 'Best Companies to Work For 2012'. The award which placed BEN as one of the country's best not-for-profit organisations was presented to HR Director, Sara Howard at a special ceremony by Best Companies Director, Glenn Dimelow.

In total 1082 organisations entered for this year's awards and places were determined based on employee feedback on areas ranging from leadership and management vision to wellbeing and personal development.
