Metzeler honours the land of the rising sun in 2012 calendar

As parent company Pirelli launched what is, it is probably fair to say, the mother of all pin-up calendars in New York, the firm’s Metzler specialist two wheel tyre brand launched a calendar of its own. The Metzeler Classics calendar, now in its 19th edition, celebrates two-wheeled competitions from the sixties with a series of black & white shots, paying homage to Japan and its motorcycling tradition, marked this year by such terrible adversity with Tsunami, earthquake and nuclear challenges.

Metzeler increases two-wheel British motorsport involvement

Following on from its five year deal with the MCE British Superbike Championship, Metzeler has announced that it will increase its involvement in Superstock 1000, 600 and the Triumph Triple Challenge, including a promotional brand unit in the trade areas of each event. Metzeler Racing manager Jason Griffiths commented; “This is a big year for Metzeler as the Superstock classes have never been bigger and we are also proud to supply the tyres for the Triumph Triple Challenge. Just like the bike manufacturers, Metzeler sees real importance in proving the quality of its road based products especially as lap times have continued to tumble. The class is very difficult to predict this year with so many potential winners, it’s going to be a real battle out there I’m sure! We are also supporting the fans more this year with a promotional unit and competitions at every round with top prizes.”

Metzeler Launches ‘Classics’ Calendar

Pirelli has its ‘Cal’ – the latest of which, incidentally, is being unveiled in Moscow on November 30 – and the company’s Metzeler brand also has a calendar of its own. London’s Ace Café was chosen as the launch venue for the 2011 edition of Metzeler’s ‘Classics’ calendar, and the tyre maker reports an enjoyable evening was had members of the Metzeler ‘community’.

Metzeler Renews National Superstock Tyre Supply Agreement

Pirelli recently renewed its tyre supply commitments to the British Superbike (BSB) and Supersport Championships, and now the company’s Metzeler brand has been confirmed as the control tyre supplier for the 1000ccc and 600cc National Superstock championships for a further five years. The German based manufacturer says these two “important production based classes within the prestigious MCE British Superbike series” have great importance as they offer Metzeler the chance to demonstrate the quality of its ‘over the counter’ tyres.

Cuban Retreader Poligom Output 56,900 tyres in 2009

A recent article written by Joel Mayor Loran and published by the Granma and Periodico publications in Cuba gives a fascinating insight into the workings of the country’s National Rubber Company – Poligom. According to the article, which is entitled “How to Save a Million Dollars” the Cuban retreading operation has been facing a scarcity of raw materials and retreadable casings.

The Poligom National Rubber Company reportedly runs five factories specialised retreading work, which retreaded 56,900 tyres in 2009. However, the lack of stability in the supply is said to have affected plans to increase production to 90,000 in 2010. In the year to 10 June the retread companies located in the municipality of Cotorro in Havana City, in the central province of Las Villas, and in the eastern provinces of Camaguey, Holguin and Santiago de Cuba received 34,000 casings, 6,000 less than expected.

Tiffany Goes The Distance With Metzeler

Tiffany Coates has developed a reputation as the "most journeyed" female motorcyclist, travelling long distances on her trusty BMW R80 GS. Her latest oddyssey was a 17,000 mile overland trip, riding on Metzeler tyres, and detailed in the latest edition of Bike Tyrestores' weekly e-mail magazine.

Metzeler Wins Third Consecutive Indoor Enduro World Title

Metzeler has claimed its third consecutive World Indoor Enduro title with top riders Blazusiak and Cervantes heading the order on Metzeler 6 DAYS EXTREME enduro tyres. After just three rounds of competition, Metzeler rider Tadeusz Blazusiak (KTM) was proclaimed FIM Indoor Enduro World Cup Champion in Vigo, Spain after winning all three finals. According to the company, this form of exciting and fast action Enduro has attracted big names this season with top names including multi World Enduro and Trials champions such as Mika Ahola (Honda), Dougie Lampkin (Beta) and Ivan Cervantes (KTM).

Cuban “Freedom Machines” Keep Riding – With Help From Metzeler

Cuba is a country renowned for Castro, Caribbean Climate and Classic Cars. But the streets of Havana and Santiago de Cuba are not just made resplendent by the presence of four-wheeled relics from the island’s pre-communist era – motorcycles predating the 1960s are still to be found, and are lovingly maintained in working order by owners who wouldn’t be caught dead riding the rubbish the Soviet Union later sent over. Of course keeping a classic bike on the road is not so easy in a country embargoed by the US for close to half a century…So Metzeler has decided to lend Cuban riders a hand.

Capitalize Placed in Charge of Pirelli UK Motorcycle Segment PR

Pirelli has handed London based agency Capitalize responsibility for promoting its motorcycling activities in the UK. Initial projects for the agency will include a PR campaign for Pirelli and Metzeler’s racing activities, to publicise the company’s growing product range through specialist and trade motorcycling media as well as to a wider audience through motorsport, national and consumer lifestyle outlets.

Pirelli’s racing portfolio ranges from sole control tyre for the World Superbike Championship and British Superbike Championship to its presence at landmark road racing events including the Isle of Man TT, North West 200 and Macau GP as well as widespread club racing events. The company has also claimed victories in the 2008 MX1 and MX2 Motocross Championships, bringing its tally to a respectable 51 World Championship crowns.

Pirelli US Recalling Motorcycle Tyres

Pirelli Tire is recalling certain Metzeler ME880 Marathon motorcycle tyres, sizes 13/90B6 M/C TL 73H and 140/90B16 M/C TL 77H. The tyres were manufactured between 22 June and 13 September, 2008, and were stamped with incorrect load range and inflation pressure information.

Pirelli said it will notify owners and replace the tyres free of charge. The recall began on 18 November, 2008, but was only made pubic by NHTSA on 10 February. (Tire Review/Akron)

Upcoming Metzeler Race Tyre to Benefit from Interact Technology

When you’re in the business of race tyres, fast is good. That is why Metzeler operates what it calls the ‘Pure Laptime’ project’ – regardless of a rider’s skill, the tyre should reduce not only his best lap times, but also overall race times, thanks to a constant performance to the very end. Metzeler says that its newest race tyre advances this quest one step further.

In spring Metzeler will release the latest incarnation of its Racetec tyre onto the UK market. Full details of the tyre will be made available closer to its launch date, however pre-release information made public at last October’s Intermot show in Cologne indicate that the new Racetec will be available in four compound variants, three for race and one for street usage, with a total of four front wheel and nine rear wheel sizes available.

Angels and Dragons

At last October’s Intermot show in Cologne, Germany, Pirelli displayed a prototype of a new tyre that was, to say the least, eye-catching. Called the Angel ST, the resplendent tyre at the exhibition was shown off complete with a unique tread design featuring angel or devil patterns. At the time, Pirelli product manager Federico Bodini explained that the tyre maker had utilised angels and demons in the tread pattern as “it translates how the consumer wants to use their motorcycle.”

CERM Research Shows Michelin Leads Motorcycle Tyre Performance

CERM (Centre d’Essais Routiers Mécaniques) has tested Michelin’s Pilot Road 2 and new Anakee 2 motorcycle tyres against the leading competitors in the market, with strong results for the French manufacturer. The Pilot Road 2 was tested against the Dunlop Roadsmart as an update to previous tests against six major competitors’ sport touring tyres; while the Anakee 2 was compared to two direct, major-brand competitors – the Metzeler Tourance EXP and Bridgestone Battle Wing. In both cases the tests involved two criteria: wear resistance and wet-surface grip.

The initial sport touring tyre tests, conducted in 2006 and 2007 compared 120/70 R 17 and 180/55 R 17 Pilot Road 2 tyres fitted to Suzuki Bandit 1200s with six comparable tyres from other premium manufacturers. The result were good, from Michelin’s perspective, and showed that the French tyres not only lasted longer but also offered better wet handling than its competitors, defying the supposed performance payoff between the two characteristics. According to Michelin, the same performance advantage was proven again in the 2008 tests against the Dunlop Roadsmart.

Metzeler Renews Racing Commitment

Metzeler Racetec has announced it will continue to be the official tyre supplier and sponsor of both the National Superstock and Superstock Cup championships for the next two years. Metzeler Racetec has been the official control tyre of these two racing championships since 2005.

Pirelli Launches Moto Keypoint Dealer Club

Pirelli Metzeler Moto UK, the motorcycle division of Pirelli Tyres Ltd UK has launched a new trade initiative aimed at the motorcycle and motorcycle tyre dealers in the UK. Central to the initiative is Moto Keypoint, a new trade club concept that was presented to 15 key dealers at a launch in Birmingham. The brief is simple says Anthony Fry, the recently appointed trade marketing manager for Pirelli Moto UK, “to grow the business in terms of volumes, profitability and share through a collaborative approach to the market with our key dealers”.
