Michelin has put its planned collaboration with Apollo Tyres on hold while the businesses wait for the national radialisation rate to gather speed. The companies maintained that their working relationship was on track, but that demand has to increase before manufacturing work gets underway.

Israel-based agricultural tyre manufacturer, Alliance, has released a new tread pattern and tyre size. The new 358 drive tyre tread pattern is characterised by strong lugs for heavy-duty services on medium HP agricultural tractors and implements. According to the company, the triple angled lugs deliver smooth ride in the field and on the road. The tyre’s “strong nylon diagonal carcass” is said to guard against mechanical failures and moisture deterioration. The new 358 is available in size 15.5 – 38.

OTR tyre wholesale specialist Heuver Banden has spent 7 million euros on a new 12,000 square-metre warehouse, more than doubling its existing 4500 square-metre space. Construction of the new site, at Hadenberg in Holland, got underway in December 2005 and is expected to be completed in the spring in time for operations to begin in May.

Czech tyre maker Barum Continental produced 18.52 million passenger car tyres last year, a growth of 7 per cent year-on-year, company representative Pavel Pravec told the Prague Daily Monitor. Production of “high-tech” tyres is said to have grown the most, increasing 81 per cent to 2.42 million units in 2005. Barum also added 300 staff in 2005. The company, which now employs 4,448 people, also reportedly plans a further hike in staff numbers for this year.

Confusion over the difference between retreads and re-grooved tyres means retreads may not be phased out of the Malaysian market after all. The news comes after Malaysian transport Ministry Secretary General Datuk Mohd Safaruddin raised the hackles of retreaders worldwide, by reportedly saying that the use of retreaded tyres would be phased out of his country. Digging deeper it appears that the combination of the dishonest sales of regrooved tyres as re-treads and some language confusion has clouded the issue.

Omskshina, Yarshina, Voltyre-Prom, Matador-Omskshina and Uralshina Saranskrezinotehnik now all come under the news name. “In 2008 the new holding is planned to be sold wholly or in parts, also a possibility of an IPO is considered,” Russian analysts added.

GreenMan Technologies has announced that it expects to report “aggregate net loss for the fiscal year ended 30 September 2005 [of] between $14 and $15 million. The company also said it will delaying filing its 10-KSB for the year. According to the company, this will take no more than 30 days and is necessary for it to finalise the accounting treatment of the pending divestiture of its Georgia operation. Greenman is recycles over 20 million scrap tyres per year in the US.

Leading UK wholesale and retail tyre supplier, Stapletons Tyre Services is mourning the loss of one of its very first employees, Stuart Masson. Mr Masson sadly passed away peacefully on 29 October at the age of 84 - nine days short of his birthday. Born on November 7, 1920 in Eaton Bray, near Leighton Buzzard, Stuart approached Sydney Stapleton for a job at his new tyre shop on Watford High Street in 1937. At the tender age of 16, Stuart started his career at Stapletons as a clerk.
