Falken Tyres team secures podium on Nürburgring 24 Hours
Falken Tyres has achieved its aim of a first podium at the Nürburgring 24 Hours. The team of Peter Dumbreck, Martin Ragginger, Alex Imperatori and Wolf Henzler guided Falken’s Porsche 997 GT3 R from 19th on the grid to a podium slot, improving on its fourth place finish in 2014. The team’s number 44 Porsche – the only car on the grid to use Falken tyres – rose gradually through the field overnight, dealing with typically varied Eifel region weather, including showers during the night.

Avon launches new TrailRider adventure sport touring motorcycle tyre
Avon has launched its new TrailRider motorcycle tyre, a product it calls its “most advanced tyre yet”. Making the point that the large trailbike segment has not been a big priority in markets more focused on sportsbikes, tourers, and naked bikes, Avon says that 600cc-plus dirt-styled bikes have become more important over the last decade. Bikes like the BMW R1200 GS and Triumph Adventure are amongst the best sellers in many markets, Avon adds.

Continental and MAN strengthen cooperation
Continental AG, a major supplier to truck maker MAN, reports that it is strengthening its long-standing partnership with the truck and bus manufacturer further. Continental’s Conti EcoPlus tyres, part of its Generation 3 truck tyre range, are standard fitment on the MAN TGX EfficientLine 2 long-haul vehicle. In addition MAN has added Conti Hybrid, as well as all standard sizes of the Conti Scandinavia truck tyre range, to its original fitment portfolio.

Kumho supplies new Dodge Viper ACR with bespoke Ecsta V720 UHP tyre
The new Dodge Viper ACR (American Club Racer) street-legal race car is available in USA from September, and will be fitted with specially designed Kumho Ecsta V720 tyres in sizes 295/25ZR19 (front) and 355/30ZR19 (rear). Dodge claims the tyres provide the largest combined contact patch of any production car, having been designed and developed specially for the Viper ACR. The tyres, which feature unique tread patterns and compounds, have achieved lap times up to 1.5 seconds faster than benchmark race tyres used for back-to-back testing. They allow sustained cornering loads of up to 1.5g, Dodge adds.

Chevrolet’s full line of 2016 Camaro models will roll exclusively on Goodyear Eagle tyres in USA. Chevrolet’s sixth generation Camaro has been redesigned from the ground up, and Goodyear engineers worked closely with its development team to engineer tyres to support its performance. The project, which included more than 13,000 hours of tyre development and testing, resulted in three fitments “tuned to the Camaro chassis,” according to Johann Finkelmeier, Goodyear’s vice president of North America original equipment sales.

Size matters: The makings of a high performance tyre market
At the start of 2015 we examined the wider car tyre segment as part of Tyres & Accessories February’s “Passenger Car Tyre” feature. In short, we examined the spectrum of figures offered for the size of UK demand and found that most sources settle between 31 and 38 million units a year. Interestingly, some of the latest data points to the market being at the higher end of the spectrum – something that has not been very widely or openly acknowledged in the past.
