Van Fleet World has presented Michelin’s CrossClimate tyre range with a second fleet award in as many months. The tyre was named winner of the Innovation Award at the Van Fleet World Honours 2016 to follow its Best New Product gong presented by Fleet News in March. The latest award was presented to Andy Fern, Michelin’s head of fleet, at the RAC Club in London before an audience of senior executives from across the fleet sector.

This year’s UK tyre retail ranking shows that the fastest growing tyre retailer is Micheldever’s Protyre chain, which added some 21 branches to its network in the last year – by far the fastest growth (both in terms of branch count and growth percentage) of any tyre retailer we are tracking. Nevertheless, ETEL remains the largest overall and is also the fastest faller, with the company running 9 points of sale less than in our 2014/2015 research. During March NTDA members in Northern Ireland removed more than 3000 car and light commercial van tyres that were below the legal tread depth limit of 1.6mm. The details were revealed at the NTDA Northern Ireland regional meeting, which took place on 7 April.

Caravan and motor home insurance specialist, Caravan Guard now offers a five per cent discount on its touring caravan insurance for TyrePal customers. After noticing a spike in insurance claims related to tyre blowouts in August 2015, Caravan Guard chose to introduce the discount to reward safety-conscious caravan owners that currently use a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS).

The Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMI) and Scottish Motor Trade Association (SMTA) met with Drew Hendry MP, Scottish National Party (SNP) Transport spokesperson in the House of Commons, to present a case against extending the MOT test for new cars. During the 2015 Budget it was announced that the Government would consult on extending the period of time before a new car receives its first MOT test from three years to four. The RMI and SMTA are concerned that a new ‘4-1-1’ system would severely jeopardise road safety in the UK.

More than 20 partners attended a three day meeting in Marrakesh (Morocco) between 25 and 28 February and learnt more about Al Dobowi´s European website and new product range. During the “exclusive symposium”, Al Dobowi partners were able to find out more about the most recent additions to the Infinity product range. These will include: 60 new passenger car tyre sizes with improved labelling scores and 47 new passenger car tyres, as well as Infinity’s new regional truck tyre range and extended agricultural line-up.

The Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) is to invest £200,000 in the first stage of four-month project which aims to develope smart tyre pressure system (commonly called TPMS) at MIRA. According to the two parties, the project aims to help increase the fuel efficiency and reduce emissions of all heavy duty land vehicles that use pneumatic tyres.
