Westlake Tyres sponsors flyweight title holder Roman Gonzalez
ZC Rubber’s Westlake Tyres brand has seen its sponsorship of WBC flyweight world champion Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez (44-0, 38 KOs) start successfully, as the boxer defended his title on HBO Boxing. The 28-year old completed a near-perfect victory against challenger McWilliams Arroyo, the IBF super flyweight champion, on 24 April, sporting the tyre brand’s logo on his shorts.

Kal Tire’s Mining Tire Group has opened a new mining tyre repair facility in Australia. The operation in Muswellbrook is within the Hunter Valley coalfields, some 160 miles northwest of Sydney, and is said to be the first of several measures planned by Kal Tire as part of an expansion of its mining tyre management service offerings in Eastern Australia.

And while Tyrepress.com reported on moves to recommence production several years ago and has followed the often bitter negotiations between minority shareholder Continental AG and Tanzania’s government since 2007, this time the decision to restart tyre manufacture lies with one party alone.

On 20 April 2016 the US Department of Commerce (DOC) revised down OTR tyre import duties Nine firms were initially covered by the ruling, however DOC found that of these nine exporters, two mandatory respondents, Qingdao Qihang Tyre Co., Ltd. and Xuzhou Xugong Tyres Co., Ltd. made sales of subject merchandise at less than normal value.

Bridgestone and MRF have tied for first place in JD Power’s latest India Original Equipment Tire Customer Satisfaction Index (TCSI) Study. However, while they both ranked first in overall customer satisfaction, scoring 881. Bridgestone performed well in terms of ride (883) and MRF performed particularly well in appearance (884). Apollo came third, with JK Tyre fourth and Goodyear in fifth.

Several online sources are reporting that a number of German car manufacturers are planning to recall large numbers of vehicles as part of the ongoing vehicle emissions scandal. Sources suggest Mercedes, Opel and Porsche as well as Volkswagen and its Audi brand are to recall certain diesel vehicles. BBC news reports that over 600,000 cars are set to be recalled, citing German media reports.

This action follows a request from the US Department of Justice (DOJ). After more than seven years at Pon/Continental Banden Groep, Bert Stellinga is to leave the company on 1 May 2016 in order to pursue “a career outside Pon”. Latterly Stellinga was director of marketing intelligence and pricing at Pon Tyre Group. Before that, he was managing director of Continental Banden Groep (the Dutch arm of the major German-based tyre manufacturer), which is run by Pon. Prior to this Stellinga was Vredestein UK managing director. No further details about where Stellinga is going have been released. News about who will replace him at Pon Group will follow in due course.
