In the US, Yokohama Tire Corporation (YTC) is offering consumers either a new 2016-2017 Chelsea Football Club (FC) shirt or a $60-$80 Yokohama Visa Prepaid card after purchasing a set of four select Yokohama tyres (including the new Geolandar A/T G015).

Pirelli has announced a US$200 million investment in Mexico to establish a second factory near its existing passenger car tyre plant in Silao, Guanajuato state. The project to build the facility was announced during yesterday’s visit by Italian Prime Minster, Matteo Renzi, to Palacio Nacional in Mexico City, where he met with President of Mexico, Pena Nieto.

Equipment manufacturer, Gordonind reports that Continental AG has completed a programme of testing the firm’s Mini Mobile Press. According to Aryeh Fried, sales and marketing manager for Gordonind, the tests – which began in October 2015 – were completed with “very satisfactory results”.

After more than seven years at Pon/Continental Banden Groep, Bert Stellinga is to leave the company on 1 May 2016 in order to pursue “a career outside Pon”. Latterly Stellinga was director of marketing intelligence and pricing at Pon Tyre Group. Before that, he was managing director of Continental Banden Groep (the Dutch arm of the major German-based tyre manufacturer), which is run by Pon. Prior to this Stellinga was Vredestein UK managing director. No further details about where Stellinga is going have been released. News about who will replace him at Pon Group will follow in due course.

A simple “trick” – or perhaps we should say “cheating” or “fraud” – has been common practice in the European automotive industry, to the displeasure of environmental organisations: Place a car with excessive tyre pressure on a dynamometer and – voilà – lower fuel consumption levels and emissions are recorded thanks to the ‘optimised’ rolling resistance. Mitsubishi has conceded carrying out this practice in Japan with test data submitted to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. This time round it doesn’t affect, as in the case of Volkswagen and its ‘cheat’ software, millions of vehicles, rather ‘only’ 625,000 small cars, the majority of these off-take production for Nissan.

Under its ‘Belt and Road Initiative’ the government of China aims to redirect overproduction within certain key industries to other countries, particularly those in Eurasia, and one project being set up in response to this strategy is about to begin in South Asia. The Jamuna Group, a Bangladesh-based private enterprise active in a number of sectors, is establishing a tyre factory within the country with technical assistance from companies belonging to state-owned chemical firm China National Chemical Corporation (ChemChina).

Autopromotec’s organisers have flown to South Korea, the worlds fifth ranked auto industry, ahead of the 27th edition of the automotive parts exhibition of which tyres play a key part. The party, led by Emanuele Vicentini, Autopromotec Brand Manager, went to South Korea in March as part of the “Missioni di Sistema” program promoted by the Italian Ministry of Economic Development and the ICE - Italian Trade Promotion Agency. South Korea makes 4.5 million vehicles annually and Hankook, Kumho and Nexen are all based there.

JK Tyre & Industries Ltd reports that the acquisition of tyre, tube and flap manufacturer Cavendish Industries Ltd. was completed on 13 April, and the company is thus now a JK Tyre subsidiary. The Indian tyre maker acquired 64 per cent of all equity shares in Cavendish for Rs 10 each; the remaining equity shares in Cavendish have been acquired by associate and group companies of JK Tyre.

Ireland’s Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport has introduced a new rule that will see motorists in the Republic receive a fine and/or penalty points for driving a vehicle with defective or worn tyres. The Fixed Charge Notice rule came into effect yesterday and adds teeth to the existing rules on driving with defective or worn tyres; drivers will now be fined €80 and have two penalty points endorsed on their licence upon payment of the fine, or will be given four penalty points following conviction in court.

The first phase of the greenfield factory project that Ceat Ltd began in late 2014 is now complete, the tyre maker reports. The Buti Bori plant, near Nagpur in India’s Maharashtra state, was commissioned on 28 March and has the capacity to produce 15 tonnes of two and three-wheeler tyres a day – some 40,500 pieces.
