At the General Assembly of the international association for parts distributors, FIGIEFA, held on 24 May in Brussels, president of the German association GVA, Hartmut Rohl, was unanimously voted (with 34 votes) to the position of Figiefa president for the second time. He takes over from Michel Vilatte of FEDA (France) who was elected to the vice-president’s role with 30 votes. IAAF chief executive Brian Spratt was elected as Figiefa’s new treasurer with 31 votes.

Dunlop Aircraft Tyres is to benefit from BAE Systems’ £1.9 billion deal to sell Hawk training jets to Saudi Arabia. According to the company, 22 Hawks will be built in Lancashire and supplied with tyres made by Dunlop Aircraft Tyres in Birmingham. The company, the world’s only specialist aircraft tyre manufacturer and retreader, already provides tyres for the 45 Hawks already in service with the Royal Saudi Air Force. Each aircraft uses three tyres – two on the main gear and one on the nose gear – and once the Saudis take delivery of the new aircraft the country will be the world’s second largest operator of the type after the UK.

Pirelli has acquired 100 per cent of Däckia Holding AB, one of the main multi-brand tyre distribution chains in Sweden from private equity group Procuritas Capital Investors IV LP (and minority shareholders) for 625 million kronor (approximately 70 million euros). Reporting the news, Pirelli explained that the move is in line with its strategy of reinforcement on markets with strong growth in high-end, high margin segments. In this case this is likely to mean the sale of winter tyres.
Domestic and European freight haulier Eurovision Logistics has appointed ATS Euromaster to supply, fit and service Pirelli tyres on its fleet. The Hull-based business trialled the policy from September 2011, when ATS-E fitted a single tractor unit and trailer in the Eurovision Logistics fleet with a mix of Pirelli new and remould tyres to demonstrate the lower tyre wear it could achieve. Dominic Yeardley, managing director of Eurovision Logistics, was convinced: “From early on in the trial we saw a marked improvement in tyre efficiency on the trial vehicle. Quality of service is critical to getting the most from your rubber; ATS Euromaster looked after these tyres as if they were its own. They promised to make our tyres more efficient and they haven’t disappointed.”
