Bridgestone’s voluntary efforts to reduce carbon emissions have been praised by the Freight Transport Association. The tyre maker shares that FTA climate change policy manager Rachael Dillon has “welcomed” the work Bridgestone is carrying out, following the Department for Transport’s overall commendation of self-regulation across the sector.
Kirkby Tyres’ Commercial Vehicle Show stand gave over a large proportion of its Hall Five space to displaying Sailun Tyres’ 16-strong range of TBR tyres. One of major UK distributors of truck, agricultural, plant and quad tyres, Kirkby are the sole distributor of Sailun truck tyres in the UK and Ireland. The distributor was pleased with the number of enquiries about the range, and went as far as to say that it was “our best ever.”
At a ceremony held yesterday in Włocławek, Poland in the presence of the Belgian Ambassador to Poland, the mayor of Włocławek and other local dignitaries, Solvay officially broke ground for the construction of a new facility that will produce Highly Dispersible Silica (HDS). The new plant represents a €75-million investment that will create more than 50 new jobs and expand the company’s HDS capacity by 85,000 tons per year.

Tyre wholesaler, Treadsetters has signed a new distribution partnership with Falken. The brand, which is seeking ways of expanding its commercial tyre activity in the UK, will supply truck and bus tyres to the Telford-based distributor.
Seoul-based Korea IT Times reports that Hankook Tire’s holding company, Hankook Tire Worldwide, will increase its capital by issuing capital stock for noncash assets. This is being done in order to make Hankook Tire its subsidiary, the ICT journal explains. Through the capital increase, Hankook Tire chairman Cho Yang-Rai and his family will be able to strengthen their control over the company by doubling their stake in the holding company.
The Health and Safety Executive has prosecuted and fined tyre collection and recycling company Saltire Recovery Ltd following an incident at the company’s Burton-on-Trent facility last July. Saltire Recovery pleaded guilty to breaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 by failing to protect its employees, and was fined £8,000 and ordered to pay costs of £4,722.
Quebec-based company Groupe Robert Bernard has inaugurated its new retreading plant. The facility, which is the largest of its kind in Canada, was built at a cost of $3 million and is the eighth retreading plant in the country to use Michelin Retread Technologies (MRT). It is the 80th MRT plant to open in North America.
Continental has much to talk about having recently begun a series of planned third generation commercial tyre launches with three coach and bus tyres. The third generation is being marked by an increased level of application specialisation in the commercial segment, the details of which can be found on pp. 52-53 of April’s Tyres & Accessories. The Conti Coach, for long distance travel, the Conti CityPlus, for regional, or intercity use, and the Conti Urban, which has been optimised for typical city-based usage. All three tyres are grouped under the more traditionally Conti-style product number, HA3, though increased branding is one of the focal points for Conti’s third generation.

April’s annual gathering of the UK logistics industry, The Commercial Vehicle Show at Birmingham’s NEC represents a fine opportunity for those in the tyre industry to connect with this side of their business. The 2013 iteration boasted the best exhibitor turnout since 2009, and the show itself seemed to have exceeded many expectations for visitor numbers, which usually number around 16,000 over its three days, the organisers say. Certainly Tyres & Accessories witnessed busy stands visiting the show on day two.
Continental’s increased specialisation in the commercial tyre segment was discussed at the launch of its latest “third generation” coach and bus tyres, but this reorganisation, begun from 1 January, has wider implications for applications beyond TBR products. The managing director of Continental Commercial Specialty Tires (CST), Dr Michael Maertens explained that the manufacturer’s new business strategy, indicated by the restructuring of this business unit, contains initiatives for future growth with particular focus on industrial and off the road material handling, underground mining and tyres for a specialised application you may not have expected to have swift growth potential.
Goodyear Tire & Rubber’s New Zealand unit, Goodyear & Dunlop Tyres, intends to sell its retail tyre and automotive service centre chain. The company is selling its 52 Beaurepaires outlets in New Zealand to local company Beau Ideal Ltd for an undisclosed amount. The deal is expected to close by the end of the month, the company said.
While opining that “Europe remains a structurally stagnant market,” Morgan Stanley Research Europe admits surprise at the level of growth seen in the light vehicle tyre replacement market during April. After 17 consecutive months of decline, the European (excluding Russia) light vehicle aftermarket grew eight per cent year-on-year during the month. Year to date, the segment is still down seven per cent year-on-year. Aftermarket European (excluding Russia) truck tyre volume also grew four per cent year-on-year during the month.
As of 1 August 2013, Continental’s Chinese activities will be overseen by Executive Board member Dr. Ralf Cramer. The incumbent head of the company’s Chassis & Safety division will take up the Shanghai-based position in order to “strengthen” Continental’s organisation for “sustained fast and profitable growth in China.” His successor within the Chassis & Safety division will be appointed at a later date.
Falken Tyre Europe has added the first all-season tyre to its portfolio. The Euroall Season AS200, which will be available from July in 27 dimensions, is described as a product that “offers improved traction on dry, wet and even snowy roads without compromising on comfort” along with “significantly reduced tyre rolling noise and shorter braking distances.”
