Busy Equip Auto For Arcom

Arcom, the Polish supplier of racking and storage systems took a stand at the recent Equip Auto trade fair, held in Paris. This was the first time that Arcom had attended the event and was a result of the newly-created co-operation between the Polish company and its French distributor AC Negoce. Exhibitions are a vital part of Arcom's marketing strategy and the company has previously exhibited at both Autopromotec in Bologna and the Reifen fair in Essen. Equip Auto was different, however, as 90 per cent of the visitors came from France and England, in contrast to the more wider geographical profile of visitors to the other two shows.

Top Technician Competition Open for Entrants

The competition to find the UK’s best mechanics, Top Technician 2010 has opened for entries and nominations at the website www.toptechnician.co.uk. The winner will be announced after three competitive assessment stages at Workshop 2010, the industry’s own parts and equipment exhibition, at the NEC Birmingham on 15 April, 2010. S/He will be awarded £2,500 tax-free, alongside thousands of pounds’ worth of prizes and – a press release for the competition states – “priceless publicity for you and your business.” Entrants must complete the initial online test by 8 January, 2010. The prize is sponsored by Blueprint, Comma Oil & Chemicals, Delphi, Euro Car Parts, Lemforder and Motor Codes.

Toyo Taps Hagan to Head Sales

Industry veteran John Hagan has been named senior director of sales operations for Toyo Tire USA Corp.

Replacing Armand Allaire, who left Toyo for a similar post with Kumho Tire USA Inc., Hagan will be responsible for all of Toyo’s sales operations and will report directly to president and CEO Yasushi Takagi.

Hagan’s past experience serving as vice president of OE sales for Pirelli Tire North America, and as vice president of sales and marketing for companies in the chemical and import/export industries. (Tire Review)

Plants Expanding, Cheng Shin Gets OE With Geely

Taiwan’s Cheng Shin Rubber Industry Co. will supply OE tyres to China’s Geely Automobile Holdings.

The tyremaker also plans to invest $300 million to expand its production capacity in China, Thailand, Vietnam and Taiwan, according to company officials.

In August, Cheng Shin Rubber agreed to buy Toyo Tire & Rubber Co.’s share in its joint venture tyre plants in China. (Tire Review)

New Triangle Plant in Production Q1 2010

The Smithers Report provides information on a new facility being built by the Triangle Group in China. The plant, located near its headquarters in Weihai, Shandong, will reportedly be operational by the first quarter of 2010 and have a capacity to produce 5.6 million truck and bus tyres or eight million passenger car tyres per annum. The US$465 million facility is also being designed to minimise raw materials waste and energy use.

Ex Conti CEO Wennemer Quits Opel Trust Board

Former Continental AG CEO Manfred Wennemer’s tenure as one of five Opel Trust board members ended on November 7 following his resignation in protest against political interference over the planned sale of vehicle manufacturer Opel. According to Reuters, while Wennemer’s act of protest against the “constant interference” from German politicians in potentially embarrassing to Berlin, his resignation is however “essentially symbolic” following General Motor’s recent change of mind regarding its European subsidiary.

Nokian Launches North American Market All-Season Tyre

North American motorists on the hunt for all-season tyres now have a greater selection to choose from following the release of the eNTYRE from Nokian Tyres. The Finnish company describes its new tyre as a premium product designed specifically for the North American market following input from its dealers. When setting out to design the eNTYRE, Nokian reports adhering to the concept of providing drivers with a ‘green tyre’ that provided ultimate in safety, driving comfort and performance.

European Recycling, Recovery Rates Still Growing, Claims ETRMA

Figures released by the European Tyre & Rubber Manufacturers’ Association show end of life tyre recycling and recovery rates last year to have exceeded 95 per cent. The 2008 statistics released by the ETRMA show a continuation in the pattern seen over the last 15 years or so, a period during which the disposal of end of life tyres in landfill has decreased from more than 60 per cent in 1994 to around five per cent today. The number of old tyres receiving ecological treatment, the ETRMA notes, has increased by an average of four per cent yearly.

MacSams Launches UK Tyre Portal

Consumer choice for online tyre purchases has been broadened through the launch of a new website by Edinburgh based company MacSams. The macsamstyres.co.uk portal enables motorists to purchase new tyres online and have them fitted by a local garage, and MacSams Tyres says buying through its website offers savings of up to 45 per cent on the rates found at traditional fast fit centres. Indeed, the company expresses confidence it can offer “the cheapest online destination for tyres in the UK.”

Indian Truck Tyre Imports Rise Despite Restrictions

Imports of truck and bus tyres into India have risen sharply since may in spite of government restrictions. The Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association (ATMA) reports 138,347 truck and bus tyres entered the country in August, up from 20,222 units in April. The majority of these were produced in China, the organisation adds – imports from China reached 100,772 units in August, a dramatic increase on the 9,594 tyres imported in April.

Solideal USA Buys Distributor

Solideal USA has acquired SPW Industries Inc. SPW is an Atlanta-based service provider and distributor of construction and industrial tyres, wheels and rubber tracks. Solideal said SPW’s 13 locations throughout the Southeast will compliment its own service network.

Cooper Ready to Roll With New Lines

Cooper Tire & Rubber had a busy week at SEMA, revealing plans for a series of new tyres for some of its associate lines and talking up its green tyre success. Cooper officials said that sales of its first green line, the Cooper GFE, have been outstanding, and dealer and consumer feedback have been positive. The tyre was introduced earlier this year.

Toyo Sales Drop 25% in H1 FY2009

Toyo Tire & Rubber remained in the red during the first half of the current financial year, recording a net loss of 1,976 million yen (£13.24 million). Sales during the six months to September 30 dropped 25.0 per cent year-on-year to 129,609 million yen (£868.25 million), and operating loss amounted to 1,300 million yen (£8.71 million), compared with an operating income of 1,177 million yen in the first half of the 2008 financial year. The company’s tyre business unit generated 74.0 per cent of the company’s entire sales and posted a first-half net turnover of 96,001 million yen (£643.11 million) – a 21.6 per cent decrease from a year earlier.

Dunlop India Sahagunj Production to Restart Following Electricity Agreement

Dunlop India’s Sahagunj factory may actually resume production following a settlement over electricity payments between the Ruia Group company and the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company. Ruia Group management has agreed to provide a bank guarantee to the power supply, who in return will resume supply. Should Dunlop India be able to successfully follow through with the funds, approximately 900 workers will return to their jobs a month after production at the company’s Ambattur factory recommenced.

Focsa Cleans Up Tyre Policy With Michelin

Waste and environmental management specialist Focsa Services UK has selected an all Michelin policy, and the tyre maker reports this move away from budget brands is increasing tyre life amongst Focsa fleet vehicles and reducing tyre related breakdowns. The Focsa agreement covers it mixed fleet of vehicles, which ranges from vans and road sweepers through to 32 tonne refuse collection vehicles. All are being switched to Michelin tyres following trials at a number of the company’s operating centres.
