3-Year Contract Furthers Dunlop Aircraft Tyres’ Bmibaby Supply

Exclusive supply of nose wheel and main wheel tyres to the Boeing 737-300 and 737-500 fleet operated by low-cost airline bmibaby is to be carried out by Dunlop Aircraft Tyres following the signing of a three-year contract between the Birmingham based tyre manufacturer and its long-standing customer. The agreement, which Dunlop Aircraft Tyres says is worth more than a million pounds, covers the supply of both new and retreaded aviation tyres to the British Midland Limited subsidiary.

Michelin Chooses Damco for Vietnam Logistics

Michelin has appointed freight forwarding and supply chain management service provide Damco as its logistics and customs clearance provider in Vietnam. Under the three-year contract, Damco will handle Michelin’s exports from Thailand into Vietnam, inland transportation, cross-docking and distribution to customers within Vietnam. Damco will also manage warehouse operations for Michelin in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The new logistics set up will enable Michelin to distribute directly to almost 100 dealers across the country.

Toyo US Capacity Expansion May Get Underway in Summer

Following the 2009 completion of an expansion project that doubled Toyo Tire North America Manufacturing’s White, Georgia facility’s physical size to approximately 160,000 square metres, the plant is operating at an annual capacity of 2.5 million tyres. However Toyo says that plans are already in place to install new machinery and expand production capabilities as early as this summer. Output is projected to reach four million tyres by 2012, and Toyo has indicated it will increase the plant’s workforce to accommodate this higher level of production.

Toyo Introduces Versado CUV for Crossovers

Toyo Tires has launched its latest addition to the Versado range in the US. The Versado CUV, designed for crossover vehicles, is promoted as being Toyo Tires’ “most efficient tyre yet” thanks to the low rolling resistance compound utilised. The tyre features an asymmetrical, non-directional tread, and Toyo reports the Versado’s four circumferential tread grooves contain the company’s trademarked ‘Silent Wall’ technology, which it explains as thousands of vertical serrations along the grooves’ walls that help to significantly reduce “pipe resonance”, a whistling noise audible to the human ear.

Conti Maintains 32% European OE Market Share in 2009

Despite what it describes as a “severely deteriorating market”, Conti reports that over the last year its original equipment passenger car tyre market share within the European Union region remained unchanged. With a production figure of 24.4 million units, Continental was able to maintain its market share of 32 per cent, and new original equipment supplies have been arranged with, amongst others, Porsche, Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz AMG, Ford and Renault.

Associate Dealer Program Blossoms for Tirecraft

Tirecraft Canada said its new associate store program has been a huge success, resulting in the addition of nearly 120 locations since it was relaunched in 2008, reported Tire Review. “This is the best possible endorsement of our programme’s strong value proposition and our new fully engaged, highly energized management team,” Tirecraft president Don Gauthier said. “We are all squarely focused on delivering added value to our customers at all levels and across all segments.”

Pirelli Cinturato Tops Club, Magazine Tests

Pirelli’s Cinturato passenger tyre line dominated annual tests run by German auto club ADAC, Switzerland’s Touring Club (TCS) and the Austrian automobile club (OEAMTC), reports Tire Review. The Cinturato P7 and P6 were named best summer tyres in their categories for their “balance of ecological aspects with performance.”

Bridgestone UK Awards “Outstanding” Tech Training Manager

Following his second placement at Bridgestone’s global awards in the ‘Safety and Disaster Prevention’ category, Phil Thirsk, technical training manager at the manufacturer’s UK division was recognised for his contribution to Bridgestone UK’s training programme, given one of the UK division’s ‘Outstanding Achievement Awards’ at the firm’s recent annual conference. Thirsk entered Bridgestone UK’s ‘Roadside Tyre Technician Training Course’, which he has helped to develop and deliver to more than 400 technicians, for the global awards.

Pirelli Tyre Revenues Expected to Increase in Fourth Quarter

Pirelli & C SpA is scheduled to reports its fourth quarter results and 2010-11 guidance on March 10. Deutsche Bank Equity Research anticipates that in the fourth quarter Pirelli Tyre revenues should benefit from a volume increase (Deutsche Bank estimates a 15% increase) compared with decreases in the previous nine months, a negative price mix (a price mix of -2% versus +6.9% in Q1, +5.6% in Q2 and +4.7% in Q3) which Deutsche Bank believes has allowed Pirelli to gain market share on the continued discipline of manufacturers, and a 2 per cent positive foreign exchange impact. Furthermore, says Deutsche Bank, margins should benefit form low raw material prices, as the large price increases for these commodities took place in 2010.

Goodyear Tyre Issues Surface at NASCAR Again

During the 2008 NASCAR season drivers complained about excessive wear in the tyres supplied by Goodyear. The company claimed last June to have resolved the issue, yet Associated Press reports that a number of drivers have complained about the tyres used during a race on March 7. It is alleged that the compound used in the tyres was suitable for speed but low on durability when used on the high-banked Atlanta Motor Speedway track.

GITI Tire IPO Reportedly Near

Reuters reports that GITI Tire intends to launch a US$400 – 500 million initial public share offer in Hong Kong in the near future. The news agency states that a ‘source’ indicated Giti Tire plans to seek Hong Kong listing committee approval in the coming two weeks, aiming to list shares in April. The deal is, adds Reuters, sponsored by BofA Merrill Lynch and Credit Suisse.

‘Emotive’ Concept Helps Agency Win Continental Advertising Account

Continental Reifen Deutschland GmbH has awarded the account for its tyre advertising in Europe, Africa and the Middle East to a new agency, Serviceplan. The Hamburg, Germany based agency beat three competitors to secure the account on the merits of what Conti calls its “highly emotive” campaign concept, which focused on the safety aspects of Continental passenger car tyres.

Conti: High Performance Segment Offers Attractive Growth Opportunities

Despite the continuing automotive industry downturn, Continental says it sees attractive opportunities in the high performance tyre market segment. Continental AG board member and head of the company’s Car Tyre Division, Nikolai Setzer, says new technologies and investment in research and development will aid Conti’s growth in this particular market. He also believes the company can boost its replacement market business through further success with OEM customers.
