Analysts: UK Tyre Industry Will be Fragmented in 2011

New research by analysts at Plimsoll suggests the UK tyre market is polarised between “those getting it right and those struggling to recover.” David Pattison, senior analyst and author of the 2011 Plimsoll Analysis explained: “Now that the storm is lifting we have been able to assess the damage left behind. 38 companies are in parlous state and starting the New Year clinging on for dear life. We have rated them as Danger accordingly. Falling demand was the final nail in the coffin for many. The mistake they made though was to not make those painful cuts early enough to protect their business”.

Kumho Tire Sales up 34% in 2010

Preliminary annual figures released by Kumho Tire show a sizable increase in sales during 2010. The Korean tyre maker reports global sales of US$2.305 billion in its home market and export markets outside North America last year, a 36 per cent year-on-year increase. Sales within the North America region amounted to $770 million, up 29 per cent on 2009. Taken as a whole, Kumho Tire gives a preliminary figure of $3.075 billion for its global 2010 sales, a year-on-year increase of 34 per cent.

UK Car Registration Grew 1.8% in 2010

The UK car market reported full-year growth at the end of 2010, but with registrations down nearly a fifth in the last weeks of the year analysts are predicting a 5 per cent decline in 2011. The latest UK automotive registration figures issued by the SMTT show that the market grew by 35,847 units to 2,030,846 units in 2010 ending 1.8 per cent up on 2009 figures. However, with registrations falling 18 per cent in December (123,817 units for the month), the SMMT predicts registrations will decline 5 per cent in 2011 to 1.93 million units due to continuing tough market conditions. Put into long-term context, 2010’s registration figure is the second lowest in the past decade and almost 375,000 units short of the 2007 levels.

Pro-Align Suggests Alignment Checks following UK Snow

The snow that has recently delivered a prolonged period of tricky driving conditions in the UK has prompted wheel alignment machinery supplier Pro-Align to recommend checks for unknown damage to vehicles, potentially preventing higher running costs as tyres wear out prematurely and increased rolling resistance leading to higher fuel bills. “Although drivers may not notice any difference to the way their car feels after sliding into a kerb or other object, it’s important that they have their wheel alignment properly checked,” explains Paul Beaurain, managing director, Pro-Align.

Yokohama Canada Reorganises Consumer, Commercial Businesses

Yokohama Tire Canada has reorganised its internal structure by creating separate commercial and consumer business units to manage the sales and marketing of the two respective product lines. This revised structure is intended to better support dealers and assist is sharpening the focus of both the consumer and commercial businesses.

‘Sotong’ Tyres – Appearance Before Safety

Skinny is beautiful, at least according to a minority of motorcyclists in Asia – yet for these riders, beauty can also involve suffering. Singapore’s Straits Times newspaper brings word of a potentially dangerous trend, that of so-called “sotong tyres.” These tyres are thinner than regular motorcycle tyres and are said to be prized for their looks and promise of speed.

Michelin Distributor Signs Fleet-wide Tyre Supply Contract

A logistics firm which has distributed Michelin tyres to retail outlets nationwide for seven years has decided to fit the company’s tyres to vehicles across its fleet. Great Bear Distribution, a 16-year-old Chester-based firm operates from 25 depots across the UK. It has signed a three-year contract with Michelin which will see tyres professionally fitted and serviced by a combination of ATS Euromaster and independent Michelin Business Advantage dealers. Existing fitments across its 65 rigids, 77 tractor units and 250 trailers will gradually be replaced with Michelin rubber over the coming months.

Continental Denies Romania Investment Plans

Media reports published on January 6 indicate that Continental AG intends to invest up to 220 million euros in Romania to build up capacity in its Timisoara plant over the next two years. Enquiries made by Tyres & Accessories to the German manufacturer’s head office, however, reveal that an inaccurate news report was released through a newspaper in Romania. The company has regularly invested its Timisoara plant since 2004, however Continental media contact Klaus Engelhardt states an investment of this size is not planned.

Tyre Shortage? Fujian Province Exported Over 32.85 million Tyres in 2010

While wholesalers importing Chinese tyre products into mature European markets such as the UK struggle to negotiate supply issues and brace themselves for another round of price increases, there are reports that tyre makers in one part of the People’s Republic are over-producing to the extent that they are actually stockpiling tyres.

Southeast China's Fujian province exported 32.85 million between January and November 2010, signalling a 27.6 per cent year-on-year increase in shipments, according to a report from the province's customs officials. The total value of the tyres sold is said to have amounted to US$460 million, a jump in value of 34.8 per cent over the corresponding period of 2009. The export price averaged $13.9 per unit, up 5.7 per cent from 2009.

Potato Fleet Trials Vacu-Lug’s Latest Green Retreads

Bedfordshire-based H.E. Payne Transport Limited and its customer, potato merchant Greenvale AP, are trialling a new generation of energy-efficient Duramold retread tyres produced by Vacu-Lug. Unlike other ecologically aware tyres, these products are actually coloured green to reinforce their environmental credentials, the tyres are fitted to a truck and trailer in the Greenvale AP-liveried fleet operated by H. E. Payne Transport on the nationwide distribution of fresh potatoes.

A total of ten of the new tyres have been fitted to the H. E. Payne / Greenvale AP Euro 5 440hp 6×2 Volvo FH13 combination.

Maxxis to Exhibit ZR9 at Autosport International Show

The Autosport International Show will take place this year on 13-16 January, and tyre manufacturer Maxxis International is preparing a new tyre UK launch, a presentation of its sports sponsorship and the unveiling of its new corporate website. The “2-in-1” Maxxis 2011 calendar and a new mobile phone app will comprise the promotional materials on show, while the ever-present Maxxis Babes will meet visitors to the show, pose for photographs and give away Maxxis merchandise. The Autosport Show is clearly an important event for Maxxis, giving the brand increasing its visibility in the aftermarket, and allowing it to communicate with the motorsport enthusiasts the show tends to attract.

Bosch Network Chooses MAM’s Web-based Garage Software

DATL Finalises Supply Deal with Spanish Airline

Dunlop Aircraft Tyres reports securing a major deal to support the new fleet of Bombardier CRJ1000 Next Gen regional jets operated by Spanish carrier Air Nostrum. The Valencia based airline operates as a franchise of Iberia Airlines and has 20 of the new aircraft on order, with options on a further 15. This will be the largest fleet of CRJ1000s in the world and Air Nostrum will take delivery of its first aircraft later this month. Dunlop Aircraft Tyres will supply the two nosewheel and four mainwheel tyres for each of the 100-seat aircraft.

Nexen Increases Prices in Europe

In addition to price rises in the US, as of January 1 Nexen has increased tyre prices in Europe. According to Nexen Tire Europe, prices for all product segments, including passenger car, 4×4 and light commercial vehicles, have gone up by at least nine per cent. The company says it was compelled to take this inevitable measure as “in the previous few months raw material costs, above all for natural rubber, have skyrocketed.” The company notes that in addition to natural rubber, prices of all products necessary for tyre production have increased.

Bridgestone Remains Tight Lipped on Firestone IndyCar Plans

In light of rumours regarding Firestone’s departure from motorsport, Bridgestone Americas has released a statement explaining its position, yet the tyre maker’s official words clarify little. Speculation that Bridgestone will dump the IndyCar Series after the 2011 season has existed after it failed to renew its tyre supply contract before the December 31 deadline.
