New Thombert forklift tyre design to provide greater traction on wet surfaces

Iowa-based Thombert Inc says it has developed a new forklift truck tyre for better operation in areas with moisture on the floor. The THp-GripTM tyre has a special hole pattern to give operators better grip in produce areas, cold storage facilities, ramps, or any other place where moisture or traction are issues. According to Reggie Collette, sales marketing manager at Thombert, the tyres offer better traction, better braking and improved safety. In addition, he says, “siped tyres may have a tendency to chunk out in the centre after some use, but the THp-GripTM tyre averages more hours of use with no chunking.”

Xlite offers set of forged wheels in Truckfest competition

Visitors to Truckfest South West have the opportunity to win a full set of xlite forged aluminium commercial vehicle wheels, courtesy of Motor Wheel Service. Individuals who visit the stand will be asked a simple question and after the show the first 10 cards drawn with the correct answer will receive 20 percent off their first order, and another five will win a cleaning kit.

Starco introduces ‘lite’ version of puncture-free Flex range

When Tyres & Accessories spoke to Starco at last year’s Reifen trade show in Germany, it was apparent from the products the Danish company had on display that it was moving away from its traditional role as solely a tyre wholesaler to also being a manufacturer of wheels and assemblies with an increasing focus on specialty wheels. Starco has now broadened its activities in this direction with the release of a further development of its Flex range – the Flex lite.

HiQ manager frustrated by auto acronyms

A HiQ fast fit manager has revealed his frustration at the preponderance of acronyms in the automotive industry – a state of affairs he describes as “infuriating”. Stuart Carr says he has been driven to distraction by the creeping usage of perplexing acronyms in manufacturers’ manuals. Carr said: “I actually enjoy picking out a manual from the glove box and having a read through, but upon recent inspection I stumbled across reams of unnecessary jargon.

“Kumho has arrived” following tyre test, says Australian MD

Kumho Tyre Australia reports critics had a surprise in store for them when the results of the annual Wheels Magazine Tyre Test were announced. The publication, which has provided Australian motorists with authoritative information for 58 years, gave the Kumho KU39 a ‘podium placing’ by ranking it a close third behind two much more expensive European tyres. Furthermore, Kumho notes, the KU39 “finished ahead of well established and respected Japanese brands in the gruelling and uncompromising Wheels test, making it arguably the best value performance tyre on the Australian market.”

Bridgestone OE for Aston Vantage S

Aston Martin refers to its V8 Vantage S as a “driver-focused” vehicle: “The Vantage S epitomises every attribute of the V8 Vantage and pushes the driver experience beyond what we have offered before,” exclaims Dr. Ulrich Bez, CEO of Aston Martin, “It combines dynamic exhilaration with all the charming finesse, beauty and practicality already associated with the Vantage range.” Bridgestone is thus pleased its Potenza RE050A has been selected as original equipment on the freshly released coupé and roadster. The Bridgestone tyre is fitted to the 430hp Aston Martin in size 245/40 on the front wheels and 285/35 on the rear.

Italian authorities seize 50,000 counterfeit wheels

Authorities in the Northern Italian province of La Spezia have seized 50,000 counterfeit wheels, reportedly worth over 20 million euros. The local Guardia di Finanza seized the products deemed to be hazardous to the safety of motorists, having intercepted them on the way into the market from China. In addition to the wheels, police also seized 100,000 accessories featuring logos of car manufacturers and 400 moulds allegedly intended for the production of knock-off wheels in Italy. A number of firms based in north-central Italy implicated in importing the products from China have been reported.

Truck tyre of the future? Michelin reveals five tonne trailer tyre

We've heard of the super-single category of truck tyres that are designed to reduce rolling resistance and increase fuel economy by replacing twin tyre fitments with a single, wider tyre. But what about a truck tyre that can carry so much more load than standard products that a trailer fitted with these can cancel out the need for an entire axle? Alongside the numerous passenger car tyre developments Tyres & Accessories reported on yesterday, Michelin also unveiled what we might tentatively call a five tonne truck tyre – a product that has the potential to be revolutionary in the truck market.

Haweka introduces new version, renames TA20 commercial aligner

Haweka has announced the introduction of the Axis200, the new name for the latest version of Haweka's long-established TA20 commercial vehicle laser wheel alignment system. The Axis range consists of five models – the Axis10 for cars, Axis50 for agricultural machines, Axis200 and 500 for commercial vehicles and the Axis4000 computerised camera system for commercial vehicles.

Calibre releases Vertigo wheel

Wheel brand Calibre has announced the release of its new nine-spoke alloy wheel, the Vertigo, in 15”-18” diameters. The brand says the wheel is inspired by classic designs from the tuning scene, with “a deep bolt bowl and finely sculpted spokes.” The Vertigo “offers superb caliper clearance and light weight in a stunning heat treated package”, with a lacquered sparkle silver finish.

Calibre Vintage range extended to 18” fitments

The Vintage wheel range produced by Alcar Wheelwright brand Calibre is described as a best-selling product. Introduced just over a year ago, the Vintage range’s retro styling has endeared it with owners of a broad spectrum of vehicles, from Mini Coopers through to Sierra Cosworths and a plethora of kit cars. The original 17-inch fitments have now been complemented by new staggered 18-inch sizes. Both the 17 and 18-inch versions are available in 8 and 9-inch widths and with a wide range of four and five stud PCDs available ex-stock. Blank rims for drilling can also be supplied.

Kwik-Fit offers puncture protection through Michelin deal

Research carried out for Kwik-Fit shows tyre damage from potholes to have more than doubled in the last year. Based upon the findings of the ICM Research-conducted survey of 2,000 adults, the fast fit company estimates the number of motorists sidelined by a pothole related puncture to have grown from 1.5 million in 2009 to 3.8 million in the preceding 12 months. In 61 per cent of cases this brief pothole encounter led to irreparable tyre damage; survey respondents reported spending an average of £65 on replacement tyres.

Alcoa wheels Europe on show at Tip-Ex

Alcoa Wheel Products will be showing its forged aluminium wheels at Tip-Ex show (stand C7-8) between 10 and 12 June. The wheel maker recently added some 17.5” wheels to its portfolio including: a 17.5 x 6.75 10 hole low deck trailer wheel, available in mirror polished version; a 17.5 x 6.75 6 hole truck wheel for medium duty trucks. Alcoa reports that the latest sizes will be available in brushed and Dura-Bright finishes from April 2011 onwards.

Starco developing specialist tyre aftermarket sales

2011 promises to be an exciting year for one of Europe’s major suppliers of specialist and industrial tyres the Starco Group, according to Group marketing manager Brian Lorentzen. Since the onset of the recession at the end of 2008, Lorentzen says Starco’s strategy has been to trim its organisation – “both to weather the financial storm and to prepare the company for the future. It is natural that we have focused on reducing operating costs throughout the group; by reducing unnecessary stock levels and by cutting expenditure on those activities which do not relate to our core business.” All this, of course needed to be achieved “without reducing the company’s ability to innovate and operate, and without impacting the customer satisfaction on which our current and future business depends,” as Lorentzen acknowledges.

TPMS, Omitec’s OmiCheck has it covered

Garage technology firm Omitec is promoting its latest TPMS-orientated range. According to the company, OmiCheck Service from Omitec carries the TPMS function and enables registration or re-registration of tyre pressure monitoring valves on the vehicle ECU’s. Company representatives say that the Tyre Pressure Monitoring application is “a must for anybody who removes wheels from a vehicle.” This TPMS application is designed to register a new valve or re-register the location of a wheel should it be moved from front to rear and detect when there is a tyre pressure monitoring system fault or when the valve itself needs replacing.
