Pirelli Carlisle an “Export Champion” – UK Trade And Investment

Pirelli’s Carlisle factory has been given the title ‘Export Champion’ by UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) – one of only five successful Cumbrian businesses. The North West region Export Champions programme was launched during Export Week by UKTI regional director, Clive Drinkwater. It forms part of a campaign led by Trade and Investment minister Lord Green to increase the number of British exporters by a quarter, which would boost the economy by £36bn. The idea is that Export Champions will inspire novice exporters to pursue overseas markets.

TGI appoints international program sales VP

US wholesaler Tire Group International has expanded its international sales team with the appointment of Luis Torres as the company’s new vice-president of international program sales. Torres, who has more than 25 years of experience within the tyre industry, joins TGI from the Alliance Tire Group, where he served as export sales manager. Prior to this he was director of export sales at Hercules Tires International. According to TGI, Torres boasts a vast amount of experience in all tyre segments, with particular emphasis on agricultural, industrial and OTR.

Mechel, Marubeni sign Bridgestone supply deal

Russian mining and metals company Mechel OAO has announced the signing of five-year contracts for supplies of extra-size Bridgestone tyres with Japan's Marubeni Corporation. These agreements were signed by several Mechel group enterprises – Yakutugol Holding Company OAO, Southern Kuzbass Coal Company OAO and Korshunov Mining Plant OAO –on the sidelines of the official visit of the Russian Federation's First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov to Japan. The deals cover the supply of Bridgestone off-road tyres for heavy dump trucks. The contracts cover the delivery of more than 5,000 tyres.

Conti’s Koeller, Kerle become ‘citizens’ of Hefei

Say Ni Hao to two of Hefei’s newest ‘honourary citizens’. At a recent ceremony in the capital of China’s Anhui Province, Mr. Burkhardt Koeller, Continental Tire division’s executive vice-president Finance and Controlling, and Dr. Tobias Kerle, general manager of the company’s Hefei tyre plant, were awarded Hefei City ‘honourary citizenship.’ This distinction, says Continental, is an official award acknowledging the Continental Tire division’s contribution and long-term commitment to Hefei city’s economic development. Mr. Wu Cunrong, secretary of the Hefei Municipal Party Committee, presented the award to Koeller and Kerle.

MG redevelopment plans continue

MG Motor UK is doubling the size of the design centre. According to the company, the latest stage of the rebirth of Longbridge will see substantial investments in the design studio, the engine test centre and the factory. Meanwhile, the firm is recruiting new engineers and designers to work on the next generation of MG cars as the firm prepares to hit the export trail to mainland Europe within two years.

Reifen first-timer Eversafe Rubber aiming for greater European presence

Although Eversafe Rubber has been producing retreading products for more than three decades now, this year was the Malaysian company’s first time exhibiting at Reifen Essen. During the show Tyres & Accessories spoke with export manager Eu Hong Lim, who shared that business had been good for Eversafe Rubber during the show. “Reifen is the most prominent, important tyre show in the world,” he commented. “This is our first time exhibiting in Essen; we chose to attend as an exhibitor this year as we want to start expanding our presence in Europe. Reifen also gives us an opportunity to meet old friends and customers.”

UK Q1 car production up

"Car production held firm in March contributing to 12.3 per cent growth during the first quarter of 2012. Challenging economic conditions in mainland Europe are a concern, but the sector continues to win business in important and faster growing export markets,'' said Paul Everitt, SMMT Chief Executive. "The prospects for the UK motor industry are extremely good with new investment, commitment and jobs being created by global automotive companies.''

Yokohama Tire Corporation debuts Mexico website

Yokohama Tire Corporation has launched a new Spanish-language website for Mexico. “The website is designed to meet the needs of our growing customer base in Mexico,” said John Cooney, Yokohama's director of export. “It has been customised with many of the features found on our English-language website in the US, including an interactive dealer locator, interactive product ‘hot spots’ and downloadable bulletins in Spanish. These materials highlight the features and benefits of Yokohama's tyres ranging from our high-performance passenger car tires to fuel-efficient commercial truck tyres.”

UK car production the highest in 16 months

January 2012 saw the most cars manufactured in the UK for 16 months, a Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders statement has revealed. While car manufacturing rose 15.6 per cent to 127,382 compared with January 2011, commercial vehicle output fell by 1.2 per cent, reaching 9,844.

ANRPC: 2011 production up 6.4%

The Association of Natural Rubber Producing Countries (ANRPC) reports that Q1 2012 Production Growth is expected to marginally increase by 0.3 per cent. During 2011ANRPC's total production rose 6.7 per cent to 10.127 million tons, faster than the 6.4 per cent rate expected until a month ago. The upward revision results from a better-than-expected output from Vietnam for the year. The country produced 811,600 tons of NR in 2011 as against 780,000 tons as anticipated earlier and 751,700 tons produced in the year before.

New top man at Kumho Tires

The Kumho Asiana Group has appointed Kim Chang-kyu the new chief executive officer and president of Kumho Tires, effective 1 February. Kim, whose career within the Kumho group of companies began in 1977, previously served as president and CEO of Kumho company Asiana IDT, a position he’d held since April 2009. Other prior roles within the company include president and CEO of Kumho Trading and president and CEO of Kumho Resort. Kim’s previous experience within Kumho’s tyre business includes roles within Kumho Tires’ export/specialty sales/overseas division between February 1991 and the end of 2000 and with Kumho Tires Dubai between 1984 and 1991.
Mr. Kim replaces Kim Jong-ho, who has retired.

Suspended sentence for illegal tyre storage, export

A Chesterfield man received a suspended prison sentence after illegally storing thousands of tyres and transporting some of them to Vietnam. Andrew Revell appeared at Derby Crown Court on 27 January and admitted five charges in relation to an illegal waste operation called Revco Recycling Limited, which he ran from a unit on the former GKN site in Sheepsbridge, Chesterfield. The case was brought against Revell by the Environment Agency, and the 50-year old was sentenced to a 12 month prison sentence suspended for two years on each of the five charges, ordered to do 200 hours unpaid work and ordered to pay full court costs of £9,578.75.

Expansion planned for Korean tread black facility

A fifth production unit for producing tyre tread blacks is to be added Orion Engineered Carbons’ facility in Yeosu, South Korea. The new unit will increase the plant’s annual output by 36 tonnes to a total of 188 tonnes. The project is expected to be complete in May 2013. According to Dietmar Balschukat, Orion's Asia-Pacific region general manager, the fifth unit will also produce carbon blacks for export, particularly to Japan and China.

Bridgestone to establish Vietnam sales company

A month after announcing plans to build a passenger car tyre factory in Vietnam, Bridgestone has stated it will establish a passenger car radial manufacturing and export company there in February 2012 for this purpose. This new operation will be named Bridgestone Tire Manufacturing Vietnam Limited Liability Company and be 100 per cent Bridgestone-owned. Company capital will be US$307.8 million.

Titan to announce 2012 sales guidance

Although Titan International intends to announce full details of its 2012 sales predictions in a conference call tomorrow, the company has already indicated its expects sales of up to US$1.9 billion next year – and the potential for even higher sales exists.
