Bridgestone plea bargain in marine hose case

Bridgestone Corp. has entered into a plea agreement regarding its involvement with a bid-rigging scheme in the US and bribery charges in Latin America. According to Tire Review, under the plea agreement, Bridgestone has pleaded guilty to antitrust conspiracy charges and a violation of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. As a result, the company will pay a $28 million fine, which is said was “a significant reduction from the applicable sentencing guidelines due to Bridgestone’s cooperation and remediation efforts.”

Bridgestone shows CAIS tyre surface sensor technology

Bridgestone Corporation has developed a new technology designed to provide real time road surface condition information to the driver by way of the tyres. The new technology is based on a concept called Contact Area Information Sensing (CAIS) and it was launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

An article on the website TruthDive suggests that cars could, in the future, be powered by electrified roadways, thus eliminating car batteries. Masahiro Hanazawa at Toyota Central R and D Labs in Nagakute, Aichi, Japan, and Takashi Ohira at Toyohashi University of Technology, also in Aichi, are developing a system that transmits electric power through steel belts placed inside two tyres and a metal plate in the road.

Kumho sets deal to supply tyres to Midas in USA

Midas stores across the US will soon have access to Kumho brand tyres thanks to a new deal between the service retailer and Kumho Tire USA, reports Tire Review. The new “partnership program” reportedly gives rebates to Midas stores purchasing Kumho tyres, and tyre distributors will get a 1 per cent credit for administering the program.

Bridgestone brings harder wearing front slicks to Aragon MotoGP

In 2010, the Motorland Aragon circuit in the north-east of Spain represented a new challenge for Bridgestone, holding its first premier class motorcycle Grand Prix; this year the tyre supplier, the teams and the riders all have the benefit of last year’s data to call upon. Hiroshi Yamada, manager, Bridgestone Motorsport Department explains: “there was a lot of good feedback from everybody in the paddock. I am pleased that we are going back this year as it is an exciting and quite dramatic circuit, and with the benefit of last year’s experience not only is our job easier as we do not need to conduct more scientific analysis of the circuit and its tarmac, but we can also be very confident of our tyre compound choices.”

World’s first concept tyre design service launched in UK

Industrial design associates, Dolton & Dex, has announced the launch of the world's first concept tyre design service. According to reports, director Bob Dolton has spent many years working on concept tyres for a number of OEMs. "More often than not, it is an area of the vehicle that designers feel they have a lack of control over," said Dolton.

Bridgestone launches new media site, further developments to come

Bridgestone Europe has announced what it calls a “new phase” in its media engagement, the launch of a centralised location for all its multi-media content. This content is now hosted at http://www.digitalnewsagency.com/Bridgestone-Europe, a site hosted by The Digital News Agency (DNA). Bridgestone announced its new partnership with TVC, the advertising agency behind the platform, on September 9 and says that DNA, which it notes is the 2011 European PR Product of the year, enables the tyre maker to provide media content in multiple formats including broadcast quality B-roll, web quality content, imagery and audio that can be accessed and downloaded by the media at the touch of a button. All content on the site is free to download for use on TV, radio, online and other digital purposes without copyright restrictions.

Michelin still top online brand, but the gap’s narrowing

The French tyre giant has done it again. As in all the previous online brand equity studies produced by Tyres & Accessories in collaboration with online brand research specialists Envisional, the 2011 data once again shows that Michelin has achieved the greatest degree of online prominence. What’s different this year is that the margin has somewhat decreased compared with the identical study we produced in 2010.

The companies occupying the remainder of the top six most-prominent brand slots all come from the same selection as before (namely Michelin, Continental, Pirelli, Bridgestone, Goodyear and Dunlop) but, this time Pirelli rose from sixth place in 2010 to third place in 2011, and Bridgestone dropped from second to fourth place. According to the analysis there was a significant drop in relative prominence between the top six brands and the remainder, amongst which small drops in position were seen for Firestone (dropping below Yokohama) and Falken (dropping below Hankook). Giti achieved the smallest degree of online prominence by a significant margin.

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 is Auto Express Best Buy

The annual Auto Express tyre test, published yesterday (8 September, 2011), awarded Goodyear’s Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 top place and a “Best Buy 2011” endorsement. Michelin’s Pilot Sport 3 also received a “Recommended” rating, coming in second and scoring very highly all round. The magazine tested ten tyres from top-selling manufacturers, using the popular 225/45R17 size fitted to Volkswagen Golf GTIs. Ten tyres were supplied by each manufacturer, while Auto Express also bought two sets at random, to ensure fair testing. The tests, including wet and dry characteristics, cabin noise and rolling resistance, were completed at Bridgestone’s cutting edge testing facility in Aprilia, Italy.

Is Japan facing rubber, tyre shortage?

Japanese vehicle makers are set to increase their production output between October 2011 and March 2012 and this is likely to lead to a shortage of synthetic rubber. At roughly the same time Japanese tyre maker Bridgestone notified OEMs that orders for passenger car tyres are likely exceed its domestic production capacity leading concerns that the country could be in line for both a synthetic rubber and a domestic tyre shortage.

Lorenzo takes San Marino victory to narrow MotoGP championship gap

Jorge Lorenzo resisted pressure from pole-sitter Casey Stoner in the early stages of to take a dominant victory and set a new lap record. Hirohide Hamashima comments on Indianapolis MotoGP

Assistant to director at Bridgestone’s Motorsport Tyre Development Division, Hirohide Hamashima, has commented that the poor performance of the supplier’s harder rear option on the relayed, slippery Indianapolis track in practice was a reasonable trade-off for the durability it would give riders during the race. However, he also said that the company would analyse tyre performance carefully and reassess for next year’s tyre selection at the venue.

Hankook to premier UHP, concept tyres at IAA

Tyre manufacturer Hankook will present its latest tyres along with what the company calls an exciting program at the 64th International Motor Show in Frankfurt from 15-25 September 2011. Hankook’s booth (Hall 8, No. F03) will have world premieres of new premium ultra high performance tyres, next generation winter tyres, and a concept tyre specifically designed for electro vehicles.

Bridgestone previews San Marino MotoGP

The MotoGP paddock travels from Indianapolis last weekend to Rimini and the Adriatic Coast for the San Marino Grand Prix on 4 September. The Misano World Circuit is twisty and quite stop-start in nature, although there is a very fast section from turns ten to thirteen. Consequently riders spend a lot of time on the brakes meaning that braking stability from the front Bridgestone tyres is crucial. Confidence in rear grip is especially important through turns six, ten and sixteen, which all lead onto sections of straight.
