Michelin to Investigate Rossi’s MotoGP Tyre
Michelin has taken the rear tyre from MotoGP rider Valentino Rossis Yamaha back to Clermont Ferrand for a thorough investigation into its sudden failure during the Turkish Grand Prix on April 22. Rossi experienced difficulties throughout the race and later complained of tyre problems. I immediately started to have problems with the rear tyre, he stated after finishing tenth. It did get up to temperature, but then I started sliding all over: something went wrong on the right side of the tyre and it gave us a lot of problems. It is believed the tyre began to vibrate violently on lap 14 of the race. Pierre Alves, Michelins technician in the Yamaha garage, believes the problems to be the result of how the tyre has been made and not a matter of rubber degradation. It seems that it is inside the tyre rather than what happened in Laguna [July 2006], when it was starting to blister, he explained. A source from within Michelin has commented that Rossi’s recent tyre problems may have been caused by a manufacturing problem rather than anything inherently wrong with the tyre’s design.

The A1 Grand Prix series is returning to its ‘spiritual home’ of Brands Hatch on April 29 for the grand finale to its second season. And with it comes Cooper Tires, the sole supplier of rubber to the A1GP series since it began on the Kent track in September 2005 with a race that drew a crowd of 80,000 spectators, the largest attendance at the ex-Grand Prix venue since its last Formula 1 World Championship race in 1986. Earlier this year, the championship topped an enormous 250,000km of race distance on Cooper bespoke racing tyres, and the tyremaker will continue to supply the series on an exclusive basis during its third season, which starts later on 2007. The organisers of A1GP believe the series, with national teams fighting for a ‘World Cup of Motorsport’, is a unique concept, and are confident that the action and overtaking present in each race makes a refreshing change from the processional nature of modern Formula One.

Ceat, India’s fourth largest tyre manufacturer, has its eye on acquiring or entering into a partnership with a tyremaker in China. Such a move would benefit Ceat considerably, and the company believes that the additional capacity this would bring, along with removing bottlenecks in supply and improving the company’s product mix, enable Ceat to place a greater focus upon exports and increase both volume of production and profit margins. Arnab Banerjee, the company’s vice-president of sales and marketing said “China provides a big opportunity. We may look at options for a possible partnership or even an acquisition.” A presence in China would provide Ceat with a foothold in a market undergoing even more dynamic changes than India. China is currently the world’s largest producer of tyres, with more than 4.5 million tonnes of rubber utilised last year.

Up in Dundee Michelin is creating more than new tyres – the company, through its Michelin Development division, is creating opportunities. An estimated 200 plus jobs will be created as a direct result of funds – almost half a million pounds – that Michelin Development has invested in twelve new or fledgling Dundee companies during the past few years. Michelin Development was established with the aim of helping small and medium businesses flourish in regions were the tyremaker has plants or other strong community links. These locations also include Stoke-on-Trent, Ballymena and Burnley - the closure of Michelin’s factory at the latter site in 2001 prompted the establishment of Michelin Development. The investment Michelin Development provides comes in the form of unsecured base interest rate loans (at present 5.25 per cent), the risk for which is covered by Michelin. And it appears these investment loans are doing what they were intended to do – throughout the UK almost a thousand jobs have been created through Michelin Development’s support, with an expected 211 new jobs in Dundee alone. One Dundee company has secured £500,000 worth of contracts thanks to the programme, while another has trebled its payroll.

(Akron/Tire Review) Trying to stay up with automotive trends is a lot like keeping up with fashion. What’s hot today is soon in the rear-view mirror, left in the dust by the next cool thing. From the hot rods to muscle cars and from tuners and the big SUV luxury crowd, one trend always gives way to the next big thing. And, while tuners and luxo-SUVs aren’t yet fading into the woodwork, a new breed of modifier is here, presenting new challenges to tyre dealers. Called “VIP style,” this latest form of modification is not about speed or handling. It’s all about aesthetics. Think style and class, not flash.
Continue ReadingWal-Mart Loses Tyre Failure Lawsuit
American retail giant Wal-Mart must pay US$4 million in damages to a woman following court proceedings stemming from a vehicle accident caused by tyre failure. Following the accident, plaintiff Carolyn Thorne instigated lawsuits against Wal-Mart as well as Continental Tire, Ford and a Ford dealership, alleging that each of these parties were in part responsible for her injuries. Ms Thorne was paralysed in a one-vehicle crash on April 24, 2004, when the tread on the left rear tyre of her Ford Expedition SUV separated, causing the vehicle to strike the median barrier. Wal-Marts legal counsel argued that the company should not be held responsible for the tyre failure as they neither supplied or installed the vehicle’s tyres, however Thorne argued that since she had her vehicle serviced at Wal-Mart the company had some responsibility in the case. Ms Thorne took her SUV to Wal-Mart to have it serviced just days before the accident. Allegedly the Wal-Mart service she opted for included tread and pressure inspections and tyre rotation. Greg Allen, one of Ms Thorne’s legal representatives, said that the tread check should have revealed a bulge where the tread was separating.
