
UK SUV sales top 1 million in 2023
SUV sales in the UK have increased by 23 per cent since 2022, according to Transport & Environment analysis of Dataforce data. In 2022, the number of new SUVs (sports utility vehicles) registered stood at 910,000 but now that number has grown by a third and stands at 1.12 million. In 2021, 50 per cent of all new car registrations were SUVs. In 2022, that figure stood at 57 per cent. And in 2023, that rose again to 60 per cent. If the trend continues, in 2027 SUV registrations could make up 75 per cent of new registrations.

Sailun Group has announced plans to set up a factory in Indonesia capable of producing 3 million semi-steel radial tyres, 600,000 all-steel radials and 37,000 tonnes of OTR tyres annually. The company intends to invest US$251.44 million in the project, including $204.29 million to build the plant in Demak, Central Java.

Pirelli honours BMTR Birmingham with double Performance Centre awards
BMTR Birmingham has secured a double victory in Pirelli’s UK retail network awards. The West Midlands retailer was awarded Pirelli Performance Centre (PPC) of the Year and Pirelli’s 4x4 Key Dealer of the Year, recognising BMTRs “exceptional commitment to excellence and outstanding service in the automotive industry,” according to Pirelli. This is the fifth time BMTR have been crowned PPC of the Year. Chris Woodhall, sales director at BMTR, said the awards were “a testament to the hard work, dedication, and passion of our entire team.” Pirelli UK CEO, Livio Magni, said that the company applauds BMTR “for achieving this accolade for the fifth time. Following the inauguration of its Serbia plant, Linglong switching truck tyre production to Europe
Linglong Tire is relocating the production of truck tyres for the European market to its newly inaugurated factory in Serbia from their previous production base in China and Thailand, Tyrepress sister website Reifenpresse reports. According to the Chinese manufacturer, the Serbia plant is “one of the most modern tyre factories in the world.” With four new tyre series and a total of 47 new products or product sizes, the product range includes truck tyres for all purposes, all of which were “developed specifically for the European market.” Serbian president Aleksandar Vučić told Chinese media that Linglong could become the country’s “fifth or sixth-largest exporter” thanks to the new plant.

Yokohama tyres OE on new Mitsubishi Triton
The Yokohama Rubber Co. Ltd. is supplying its Geolandar A/T G94 tyres as original equipment (OE) on the new Triton pickup truck, launched by Mitsubishi Motors Corporation in February 2024 in Japan. The Triton was introduced to the Japanese market about 12 years and is being fitted with 265/60R18 110H size tyres. The new Triton was launched in Thailand in July 2023, in the Philippines in January 2024, and in Australia and New Zealand in March 2024, and will be successively launched in approximately 100 countries around the world.
