ATSE: CV tyre explosions ‘like being hit by a truck’
ATS Euromaster is seeking to raise awareness of the danger of commercial vehicle tyre explosions by releasing ideo footage showing the catastrophic effects of inflating a truck tyre which has previously suffered run-flat damage. The recording forms part of training DVD produced in-house and being shown to ATS Euromaster’s 2,300-strong operations team. It forms part of the company’s new ‘Safe by Choice’ initiative and reinforces the safe methods of operation which must be followed with all truck, earthmover and agricultural tyres. The footage also serves as a timely reminder of why tyres should always be serviced by professional tyre technicians.

Grouptyre reports that it is winning new business across the south coast and Kent thanks to investment by member EG Wholesale. The company has opened several new distribution points to improve its service to franchised dealer networks and independent tyre retailers and garages. During the last nine months EG Wholesale has invested £2.5 million in distribution hubs in Canterbury, Strood, Bournemouth, Southampton and Portsmouth and, most recently, opened a new centre in Worthing.

Bridgestone has announced a proposed revision to its tyre allocation procedure and selected tyre compounds for the remaining races of the 2011 MotoGP season, effective from the Czech Republic Grand Prix. The supplier worked with the Safety Commission – on which riders, FIM, IRTA and Dorna are represented – to decide on the proposal in response to rider feedback. Bridgestone has in the last 18 months developed and introduced its extra soft compound in 2010 and selected softer tyre compounds for the Catalunya, British, Dutch, Italian and German Grands Prix so far this year. The US Grand Prix at Laguna Seca next weekend will see softer rear slicks introduced to attempt to improve warm-up performance, especially as the morning sessions can be cool.

He was previously responsible for the light vehicle segment alone. His added commercial responsibilities extend to both medium- and heavy-duty vehicles. He will continue to report to Fras-le's director of operations, Zomar Oliveira.

Over the next three months, Czech Republic based agricultural, industrial and off-highway tyre manufacturer MITAS a.s. intends to change the corporate names of all its sales subsidiaries in order to bring their names in line with that of the company’s core tyre brand. The changes will be applied to all 13 of the company’s sales subsidiaries, the bulk of which are located in Europe.

Pirelli has announced that it’s Milan headquarters will host the Formula One Teams’ Association Fans Forum event. The forum will take place at 17:00 on Wednesday 7 September, just before the Italian Grand Prix, with some of the leading drivers and team principals in attendance. Pirelli confirms Stefano Domenicali, Nico Rosberg, Jarno Trulli and the tyre supplier’s motorsport director Paul Hembery will be present.

Tyre maker Triangle Tyre Co. Ltd is reportedly planning to invest 275 million euros in raising its production capacity to 2 million radial truck tyres a year. According to reports published by Tyres & Accessories’ German sister publication NeueReifenzeitung (reifenpresse.de), the investment is earmarked for the development of the company’s operations in Weihai, Shandong province. NeueReifenzeitung reported that the large Chinese tyre manufacturer has a total of three plants in Weihai where is also produces OTR production as well as tyres for cars, agricultural and industrial vehicles.

Following a September 15 change in the regulations covering automotive spare parts in Qatar, the importation of used tyres and certain new tyres into the Gulf state is now forbidden. Under the new rules, issued by the country’s Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Business and Trade and Ministry of Interior, no new tyres will be permitted to enter the country unless accompanied by a Gulf Conformity Certificate. Tyres must also carry a 180km/h speed rating in order to be eligible for importation. Balloon tyres intended for use on passenger vehicles are also no longer able to be imported unless accompanied by a certificate of conformity, with the type of tyre engraved in red on the sidewall.

On July 15, India’s Modi Rubber Ltd notified the Bombay Stock Exchange that the sale of its Modi Tyres subsidiary to the Continental Group has been completed. It informed the BSE that the entire shareholding in Modi Tyres Company Limited, a total of 56,046,680 equity shares, changed hands for a share purchase consideration of Rs 1,176,189,838 (£16.1 million) and a non compete fee, net of withholding tax, of Rs 172,295,100 (£2.4 million). Modi Tyres Company Limited is thus now a wholly owned subsidiary of the Continental Group.
