The National Tyre Distributors’ Association (NTDA) its launching its manifesto for raising standards and improving safety in the UK tyre industry at the associations conference on Thursday 12 October. The NTDA’s manifesto tackles the key issues facing manufacturers, distributors, motorists and other important stakeholders and outlines a plan of action for the NTDA and its members.

Autosupplies Chesterfield Ltd has acquired Barnsley-based motor factor Butlers Automotive with immediate effect. The acquisition is the first of its kind for Autosupplies, having grown its head office and Bolsover branch to be one of the largest single branch motor factors in the UK, occupying a 40,000sqft site and employing more than 90 members of staff and managing a fleet of more than 50 delivery vehicles.

Blackcircles.com CEO Mike Welch left the employment of the company he founded in August 2017. Since then he has joined the board of SimpleTire.com, a fast-growing, US-based online tyre business. Meanwhile he also remains a consultant to blackcircles.com. Tyres & Accessories recently caught up with the well-known tyre entrepreneur to find out more about his latest venture. SimpleTire.com is the brainchild of brothers Andy and Josh Chalofsky. Andy has been in the tyre business since he was a teenager and started out in the warehouse of his family’s brick and mortar tyre business. From here he worked his way up and took over a subsidiary tyre business after graduating college. In 2012, he started building the foundations of what is now SimpleTire.

Caledonian Tyres refurbishment aims to improve Bandag’s position in Scotland
Paisley based Caledonian Tyres has unveiled a £250,000 refurbishment, which aims to position it as one of the most advanced retread tyre centres in the country. One of the Bandag network’s largest franchise partners, Caledonian Tyres’ development of its facility features improved factory facilities, new look offices, improved equipment and an eye-catching rebrand of the entire premises. The company states that the investment underlines the strength of the commercial retread tyre market, and follows investments made at Lincolnshire-based Bulldog, another large Bandag franchise.

For the past 11 years, Toyo Tire & Rubber has engaged in research into the viability of airless tyres that deliver comparable performance to their pneumatic counterparts. The Japanese manufacturer first presented a prototype product at the Automotive Engineering Expo in May 2012 to demonstrate what it had achieved since 2006. Toyo Tires says it has since made “fundamental changes” to the structure of its airless tyres and has resolved various issues. The resulting improvements, it adds, are “substantial” and allow practical driving upon the latest generation of tyres. The company recently released its latest generation of airless concept tyre, the ‘noair’.

Leo W. Gerard, president of US-based trade union the United Steelworkers (USW), has sent a letter to South Korea’s President in which he raises concerns about Kumho Tire’s dealings with its workforce in the United States. The USW comments that this correspondence with Moon Jae-in addresses Kumho’s “union-busting actions towards its workers” and asks the South Korean government to intervene and “ensure that the workers are free to exercise their democratic rights.”
