Creditors name new Kumho Tire senior management
Kim Jong-ho will likely return as president and chief executive officer of Kumho Tire. The 70-year old, who held these positions from 2009 until his retirement in 2012, has been recalled by the tyre maker’s creditors to head the loss-making company. During his previous tenure, Kim led Kumho Tire through the early years of its debt workout programme. The creditors will seek approval for Kim’s appointment at a Kumho Tire extraordinary shareholders’ meeting on 1 December.

According to a study carried out for Kumho Tire, sales of all-season tyres in the UK are only a little over half the European average. Kumho contracted market research institute GfK to look at all-season tyre sales in ten European countries; GfK found that four per cent of tyre buyers in the UK opted for all-season products.

Damien Harmon has been appointed president of GCR Tires & Service, a commercial vehicle tyre and service network operated by Bridgestone in North America. The current chief operating officer of Bridgestone Retail Operations will take up his new position on 1 November. He succeeds John Vasuta, who was named senior vice-president, global sales, Firestone Building Products.

Continental winter tyres have already claimed two test victories this autumn – the WinterContact TS860 took top spot in ADAC and Auto Bild tests, while the WinterContact TS850 P was voted top by Auto Motor und sport. The latter of these has now achieved a second win, in the test that will appear in the issue of Auto Bild Sportscars (11/2017) due to be released tomorrow. The victory was a shared one, however, with the Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4 named joint winner.

Operations at the Firestone Fibers and Textiles plant in Woodstock, Canada will cease by the end of next year, reports Bridgestone Canada Inc. The company’s decision to close the facility, whose product portfolio includes reinforcement materials for Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations, will affect a total of 170 employees. Bridgestone intends to close the plant in phases, beginning 31 December 2017 and culminating in the total cessation of operations in the second half of 2018.

B&J Rocket says it always has an eye on the legal requirements that exist in different countries regarding workplace health and safety. In order to better meet these regulations, the company has changed its buffing blade packaging unit and decreased the weight of its packaging boxes by 10 kilogrammes. Boxes containing 30 sets (formerly 50 sets/25 kg) now weigh only 15 kilogrammes and are thus much better suited to the actual load limits applied to the lifting and carrying of occasional loads.

Falken plans to launch its latest summer tyres during its debut as an exhibitor at the Equip Auto trade show in Paris (17-21 October 2017). The new Ziex ZE310 Ecorun summer tyre, available from spring 2018, will be launched as the successor to Falken’s Ziex ZE914 Ecorun. Falken says the new tyre offers outstanding traction and grip on both wet and dry roads coupled with low wear.
