Officials Challenge Polluting Tyremaker
Deputies from the people’s congress in the Chinese city of Guangzhou have asked officials from the city’s Environmental Protection Bureau why no action has been taken to deal with the large amount of pollution caused by a state-owned tyremaker located in the city. South China Tire & Rubber, one of the country’s largest tyre suppliers, reportedly emits large quantities of sulphurous gas from its factory, and this is claimed to affect the health of an estimated 100,000 people.

At the end of January, Apollo Tyres Ltd, published un-audited financial results for the 2006/07 financial year that show net sales grew by 26 per cent year-on-year to 8.575 billion rupees (£100 million). At the same time net profit as a percentage of sales increased to 4.1 per cent from 2.4 per cent.

The fifth China International Tire Expo, (CITExpo) is being held in Shanghai this September. Since the first exhibition was held in 2003 the CITExpo has grown rapidly and strengthened its position as one of Asia’s leading tyre events. The exhibition’s organisers, Reliable International Exhibition Services, report that this year’s upcoming event shows every sign of being another record breaking year. From the exhibition’s inception until 2006 the CITExpo was held solely in the west wing of the Shanghai Everbright Convention & Exhibition Center in the city centre, but this year the increased number of exhibitors has meant that the centre’s east hall has also been needed.

The workers, with the support of the local community, have launched an online petition to muster support in convincing the American tyremaker to reverse its decision to close the facility.

(India/Rubber Asia) Indias largest manufacturer of steel cord reinforced converyor belts, Phoenix Yule, has announced plans to expand its capacity by as much as 60 per cent. Phoenix Yule is the company created by the privatisation of the conveyor belts division of the public sector Andrew Yule. According to Rubber Asia, currently 74 per cent of its 460 million rupee (£5.26 million) paid-up equity capital is held by Phoenix of Germany, while the rest is with the Government.

South China Tire, producer of Sunny and Wanli branded tyres, is to expand capacity to around 15 million tyres a year with a new plant. The first phase of the new plant began production in September 2006, and offers additional production of two million tyres (the total capacity is six million tyres). The total project will take up till 2012 to complete, with a final annual capacity of around 15 million tyres.
