Toyo Tires reflects on “great” Dakar
While Toyo had hoped for honours at the Dakar Rally 2012, the Hummers it supported finished in creditable positions, with five stage victories and a further five podiums going to the Speed Energy / Toyo Tires Hummers. Robby Gordon and navigator Johnny Campbell finished the 2012 Dakar on a high note by winning the 29km timed special of Stage 14, the last in this year’s off-road marathon rally. Gordon finished fifth overall, with his vehicle being the only two-wheel drive vehicle finishing in the top ten.

Tyre manufacturers, transporters, dealers and processers in South Africa have until January 31 to register for the Recycling and Economic Development Initiative (REDISA) Waste Tyre Management Plan, which was approved by the country’s Department of Water and Environmental Affairs in November 2011. Registration is compulsory and is required for calculating a new levy intended to cover the cost of end of life tyres. The levy will take effect as of 1 February 2012.

Leading UK farm machinery show, LAMMA opened today at the Newark and Nottinghamshire Showground, Winthorpe, with Michelin using the show as an opportunity to exhibit its latest addition to the range of sizes for its CerexBib combine harvester tyre. The IF (Improved Flexion) 800/70 R38 CFO (Cycling Field Operation) is a direct reaction to some of the largest machines expected to be delivered to customers this year. The CerexBib is designed to protect fields and deliver higher load capacity for a narrower width, helping large grain farmers, contractors and farm machinery cooperatives, according to Michelin.

Marangoni’s project car made its debut at Bologna Motor Show in December 2011, but it is already courting attention in 2012, with Auto Express remarking on its “wild styling” in the 18 January issue of the popular magazine. Now the car is touring the UK throughout January.

MPs from the Transport select committee today heard of the overwhelming opposition to Government plans to reduce the frequency of MOTs. Bill Duffy, co-ordinator of the Pro-MOTe campaign, supported by a range of motoring organisation, road safety campaigners and industry bodies said scrapping annual testing would be "dangerous, expensive and unwanted".

The Trelleborg Group has named its replacement for Carolina Dybeck Happe, who during the first quarter of this year will step down from her position as chief financial officer in order to take up a similar role with another company. Ulf Berghult, who returns to Trelleborg from automotive, caravan and marine product manufacturer and supplier Dometic Group, will assume the position of CFO during the second quarter of 2012.

On 17 January Cooper Tire & Rubber completed its acquisition of the former Trayal manufacturing plant assets in Kruševac, Serbia. A formal signing ceremony was held to mark the official start of Cooper Tire Serbia; this was attended by Serbian President Boris Tadić, Serbian Prime Minister Mirko Cvetković, US Ambassador Mary Warlick, along with Roy Armes, Chairman, President and CEO of Cooper Tire. During the ceremony Armes stated that Cooper elected to invest in Serbia not only because of its significant economic potential, but also for its quality workforce, geographical advantages and Serbian government support.

Hankook Tire says its global sales last year reached record levels. The Korean company’s tyre sales in 2011 amounted to KRW 6.484 trillion (£3.7 billion), a 20.9 per cent year-on-year increase. Yet thanks to steep rises in raw material prices this bumper sales year was not accompanied by a corresponding increase in operating profit – in 2011 this reached KRW 566.3 billion (£325.1 million), a decline of 8.8 per cent on the previous year.
