Just a generation ago the humble motor vehicle doubled as a ‘fortress of solitude’, a place the long arm of everyday responsibility couldn’t reach and a haven for those seeking a few moments’ headspace at the start or the end of a busy day. But unreachability is an increasingly scarce commodity these days. The introduction of hands-free systems has transformed the fortress into an office on four wheels for many, and now technology lurking just around the corner will bring our home-life cares to us on the road as well.

Pirelli is celebrating 2000 homologations of its premium products. In the first half of 2015 alone, the Italian firm added 200 new homologations to its line-up, including those some of the most high profile vehicles at this years Frankfurt Motor Show. These include the new Bentley Bentayga; the Mercedes GLC, BMW X1, BMW 7 Series and Jaguar F-Pace.

Growing global demand for Landsail car, high performance and van tyres has prompted Sentury to open a new factory in Thailand and the first Landsail tyres rolled off the production line earlier this week. The new plant will mean a significant increase in the capacity and output of Landsail tyres. A completely automated production line has been introduced, with Sentury investing in the VMI Exxium building machines, which are capable of producing a tyre every 38 seconds.

The acquisition of tyre, tube and flap manufacturer Cavendish Industries Ltd. has been approved by the Board of Directors at JK Tyre & Industries. The Indian tyre maker is acquiring 100 per cent equity in Cavendish from Kesoram Industries Ltd. for just under Rs 22 billion (£214.6 million). According to JK Tyre, it and other JK Group companies will fund the acquisition by a combination of debt and internal accruals, and JK Tyre’s financial exposure is expected to be some Rs 4.5 billion (£43.9 million). The deal is expected to close in December 2015.

The entire sales management team within Continental’s tyre business in China has been removed from their duties, and an investigation has begun into allegations of corruption. German financial daily Handelsblatt reported yesterday that a number of managers allegedly “personally enriched” themselves through business transactions. Continental declined to officially comment on the situation as the investigation is not yet complete.

Nokian Tyres plc has announced the final results of the tender offer related to its outstanding €150 million 3.25 percent senior unsecured notes issued on 19 June 2012 (FI4000046370). The offer period expired two days ago and the aggregate principal amount of notes validly offered for purchase by noteholders came to €62.3 million, an amount representing 41.53 per cent of the whole amount of all the notes.

In July the Volkswagen Group nominated the first 44 suppliers who will collaborate with the vehicle manufacturer under FAST (Future Automotive Supply Tracks), a joint initiative that aims to respond to current automotive sector challenges and the digital transformation occurring within the industry. Bridgestone Corporation is the only tyre maker to have been nominated in this initial batch of suppliers; Bridgestone Europe president and CEO Franco Annunziato states that the company looks forward to participating in the FAST programme to “help provide solutions for the vehicles of tomorrow.”

An agreement signed on 4 September marks Michelin’s initial step towards becoming a well-known name in the metal 3D printing sector. The Michelin Group and the Fives Group are joining forces to create Fives Michelin Additive Solutions, a 50/50 joint venture partnership that aims to become a “major metal 3D printing player.” Fives Michelin Additive Solutions will be located near Michelin’s headquarters in Clermont Ferrand, France and initially employ around 20 people from both partners. At least €25 million will be invested into this new joint venture over the first three years.

Bridgestone Corporation has established a new facility in order to better educate its employees on disasters and how to prevent them. The Global Disaster Prevention Center is located within the Bridgestone G-MEC Building in Tokyo, Japan, and Bridgestone is using it to conduct training to prepare for fire-related emergencies. The centre will be further expanded early in the next fiscal year to include training on natural disasters, and will draw upon lessons learned in Japan’s earthquake of 2011
