Hankook’s maiden DTM season as tyre supplier got underway in May of this year at Hockenheim near the Hardtwald Forest, and it comes to an end at the same venue this weekend. Hankook says the track’s varied characteristics offer everything that makes racing so attractive: high-speed straights follow many narrow and wide, slow and fast corners.
On 16 October ETRMA (European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers' Association) announced the results of its second round of tyre testing examining REACH compliance of tyres found within Europe. ETRMA’s results show that roughly 10 per cent of the sample failed to comply with the clean oil legislation, around the same proportion as failed the last set of tests held earlier this year. However while ETRMA raised concerns about both compliance and enforcement of REACH regulations, some of the companies named in the report have already responded to accusations of compliance failure by raising questions of their own about the way in which the sample was selected.
ETRMA’s second testing campaign was carried out between April and September 2011 on a sample of 94 tyres available for sale to EU consumers in several of the largest national tyre markets. These tyres were all produced in late 2010 and 2011 in 50 factories located in 11 countries, and are being sold in the EU under 51 brand names (these include 31 brands not tested in the first round). The first round of tyre compliance tests the ETRMA conducted took place in March 2011 and followed a similar approach.
Kwik Fit Group has confirmed its intention to sell Speedy, the group’s French automotive fast-fit company. The announcement confirms earlier reports tyrepress.com published in September that suggested that the business’s suitors included president Jacques Le Foll, his predecessor Giles Chauveau, backed by investment fund Butler Capital, plus automotive centre operator Feu Vert, who previously had its eye on Speedy some four years ago. (Feu Vert is a French workshop and automotive specialty shop chain that operates more than 400 outlets, around three-quarters of which are located in France).
A fire involving around 500 tyres at Universal Tyre in Colchester occurred at around 23:00 on Tuesday, 18 October. The BBC reports that residents in the area were evacuated for the evening, but were allowed to return home this morning, after eight fire crews managed to extinguish the blaze overnight.
The German Fulda brand – part of the Goodyear Dunlop group – has announced its new truck tyre ranges; the Fulda Ecocontrol 2 and Fulda Ecoforce 2. The new tyres offer reduced operating costs, thanks to their new design features, according to the company. Respectively for steer and drive axles, the new ranges are for both long and regional haul service as well as in distribution, making them operationally flexible.
From the 2013 World Superbike Championship season Pirelli will replace the current 16.5" tyres with larger 17" Diablo Superbike tyres. Pirelli says the move will better allow the company to develop its road-going products in the motorsport arena. The Italian manufacturer says it “develops its reference product through technologies and advances learned from its highest-level production series, the World Superbike Championship, for which it is the sole supplier.
Marangoni Retreading Systems has announced a new deal with Bergkvarabuss AB, one of the largest private tourist bus and coach companies in Sweden. The Italian retreader will supply tyres with its BUS-T tread pattern, manufactured using its Ringtread joint-free procured ring technology, to the transport firm, becoming the first retreader to supply Bergkvarabuss. Founded in 1975 as a small taxi and bus business, the fleet has since grown to become the biggest family business in the sector in Sweden.
Hofmann has launched a scrappage allowance promotion, which enables workshops to gain up to £500 for their old wheel aligner, tyre changer or wheel balancer when purchasing a new Hofmann undercar product. The promotion runs until 31 December, and is exclusively available via Unipart Garage Equipment Services, Hofmann’s UK-wide distributor partner.
Following up the May launch of the Singapore tyre brand Radar’s “Mobilizing Hope” breast cancer campaign, its UK distributor joined dealers, president of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation Myra Biblowit and top breast cancer research doctors at an exclusive gallery showing of Evelyn Lauder’s photographs. Universal Tyres and Spares director Michael Jackson said: “The event was very enjoyable and it was great for us and the dealers to see how the money raised is being used in research and development, the doctors explained the progress they are making and improving communication and preventing Breast Cancer before it’s too late.“ The event was hosted by Elizabeth Hurley and Larry Gagosian, the gallery owner. Following the activities at the gallery the distributor, dealers and guests attended a dinner at Massimo restaurant where the chef patron Massimo Riccioli had created a fantastic “anti-cancer” menu.
Trelleborg Wheel Systems’ manufacturing facility in Tivoli, near Rome, Italy, was the venue for Massey Ferguson’s international presentation of its completely new MF 7600 Series tractor range. The event, held on 15 and 16 September 2011, was attended by key management from Massey Ferguson and Trelleborg as well as specialized media from 16 European countries.

Pirelli has announced that it will raise prices for car and light truck tyres in Canada shortly. The increases, which comes in the context of a string of price increases around the world, will be effective from 1 December 2011.
China’s Longxing Chemical Industry, which supplies carbon black and electricity to “major tyre makers” in the people’s republic is reportedly planning to raise 400 million yuan by issuing a maximum of 45 million shares at 9.26 yuan per share in a private placement.
Al Dobowi, one of the leading tyre companies in Dubai, has inaugurated the first Hankook Masters Shop in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Al Dobowi, the official distributor of Hankook tyres in the (UAE) cooperated with Hankook Tires, Dubai in the completion of this project. The first Hankook Masters UAE branch is located within the premises of Grand Service Station, Dubai.
A Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle dealer covering the North East of England has invested in four Haweka Axis200-2 wheel aligners, turn plates and car kits. Bell Truck and Van in Billingham, Gateshead, Longbenton and Spennymoor says the investment will enable them “to help customers save costs on fuel and tyres”. The dealer group purchased the aligners from Haweka after seeing a demonstration of the equipment in their workshops.
