Responding to the warning from Citizens Advide, Chris Mason, managing director of Motor Codes, said: "Despite the vast majority of garages and car retailers upholding the very best service standards, these figures are impossible to gloss over and demonstrate why some consumers are nervous about buying used cars.
Citizens Advice is warning consumers to be on the lookout for problem motors after dodgy used cars bought from independent dealers topped the list of the 10 most complained about consumer issues between April and June of this year.
There were over 12,000 complaints about second hand cars bought from independent dealers – eight per cent of all cases the Citizens Advice consumer service dealt with and three times as many complaints as those made about used cars bought from private sellers and franchise dealerships.

Apollo Vredestein, the company behind the Vredestein tyre brand, says recently announced major investments are in line with its focus on continuous sustainable growth, even in economically challenging times. The investments are to be made over the course of 2013 and the company anticipates production capacity for Vredestein agricultural tyres to be some 50 per cent greater when the project is fully implemented. The decision to invest an undisclosed sum in the agricultural sector was made in response to growing demand within the European agricultural market for Vredestein tyres.
Continental boasts that its latest North American replacement market tyre, the PureContact, brings together “best-in-class wet braking, fuel efficiency and ride comfort.” The all-season tyre is available to North American consumers in a number of 15 to 18-inch rim diameters, a UTQG rating of 700 AA, and H and V speed ratings.
According to Thierry Chiche, Michelin’s senior vice-president Russia & CIS, the tyre maker plans to invest 35 million euros this year developing facilities within the country. Thierry shared this news during the Moscow International Automobile Salon 2012, which began yesterday, and said the funds would primarily go towards expanding the product portfolio manufactured at Michelin’s Davydovo factory near Moscow.
In addition to its research into guayule and Russian dandelion-sourced rubber, Bridgestone has looked into the potential applications of soybean oil in tyre manufacture. The company’s American operation has now unveiled a concept tyre it says contains more than ten per cent soybean oil. Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations displayed the Firestone branded 800/70R38 Radial Deep Tread 23 agricultural tyre at the Farm Progress 2012 Show in Boone, Iowa, and says soybean oil may be present in its production agricultural tyres as early as next year.
Goodyear Dunlop has won four new lots in the Government Procurement Service RM955 supply and fit of tyres framework agreement. The first of these lots is for the sole supply and fitment of Goodyear and Dunlop tyres to UK Police Forces, while the others deal with wider public sector interests. The contracts will cover cars, trucks and motorcycles.
Euro Car Parts reports that it has invested in a second storage facility, following the opening of its National Distribution Centre in Tamworth, Staffordshire in 2010. The 141,000sqft warehouse in Swadlincote, Derbyshire will primarily store crash repair stock including Platinum Plus product lines and the company has signed a 10-year lease agreement with GE Capital Real Estate for the Tetron Point distribution unit. ECP has continued to expand its network too, with 10 new locations announced. They are anticipated to open in the fourth quarter of 2012.
Bridgestone Motorsport Tyre Development Department manager Shinji Aoki has revealed that MotoGP riders’ test session at Brno suggests the tyre supplier’s experimental new hard compound tyre improves on the warm-up performance of the current hard tyre. The results were far from conclusive though, with few riders choosing to test the rubber in cool conditions.

The Warrior brand is set to do battle with in the Chinese market, and perhaps will be pitted against premium brands. On 28 August the joint venture operation run by Double Coin Holdings, parent company Shanghai Huayi (Group) and Michelin unveiled its new passenger car range. Double Coin Group (Anhui) Warrior Tires began manufacturing Warrior branded tyres at its Wuwei, Anhui province factory in March and the new facility is expected to have a six million tyre a year capacity by the end of 2012. Output capacity should reach 15 million a year by 2015.
The US edition of CIO magazine, a publication aimed at senior IT executives, has named Goodyear Tire & Rubber one of its 2012 CIO 100 winners. Upon receiving the accolade, Goodyear vice-president and chief information officer Jim McKinnon said “winning the CIO 100 award is tremendous recognition for the success of our multi-year project, which has aligned all of the company’s operations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa on a common business platform.”
The start of this year’s Tyre Safety Month is only weeks away, and the campaign has received a boost with the news that Staffordshire Safer Roads Partnership is to become an official TyreSafe supporter. By supporting the non-profit organisation and its campaigns, Staffordshire residents and drivers passing through the county will receive a host of road safety information in the form of advice and information about the importance of correct tyre care and maintenance.
Former Sibur-Russian Tyres CEO Vadim Gurinov has been appointed president of Russian engineering construction company Stroytransgaz, replacing Sergey Makarov following the latter’s resignation. Gurinov, who was elected to the post on 22 August, is a member of Stroytransgaz’s Board of Directors and continues to hold the post of chairman of tyre maker JSC Cordiant’s Board of Directors.
Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa won an exciting last lap battle with Factory Yamaha Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo to win MotoGP’s Czech Grand Prix for his second successive victory. Lorenzo led Pedrosa for the first half of the race, with the two riders setting new circuit lap record on six consecutive laps; Lorenzo’s eighth lap time of 1:56:274 being the quickest. After Pedrosa made his way past Lorenzo on lap eleven the two riders held position until the last lap where Lorenzo squeezed past Pedrosa, leading to a close final bend where the Repsol Honda rider hit back, getting the better drive to the line to win the race by 0.178 seconds. Monster Yamaha Tech3’s Cal Crutchlow claimed his first ever MotoGP podium by taking third place, while Power Electronics Aspar’s Randy de Puniet made the most of his good qualifying performance to cross the finish line in eighth position to be the highest placed CRT rider. Bridgestone stayed in the Czech Republic after the race weekend, using Brno as the venue for its group test, where the company was due to unveil a new compound.
