Apollo Tyres’ Onkar S Kanwar has called the company’s performance in the third quarter of the 2009-10 financial year a “remarkable performance”. The company chairman had ample ground for such praise – year-on-year net profit ballooned from Rs 89 million (₤1.2 million) to Rs 1.8 billion (₤24.4 million) on the back of a Rs 22.96 billion (₤311.0 million) net profit, an increase of 108 per cent from the third quarter of the 2008-09 financial year.
Production of truck and bus radials is scheduled to begin at Bridgestone’s factory in Indore, India. Company subsidiary Bridgestone India Private Limited has announced that, in response to increasing domestic demand, approximately 3.3 billion yen (₤22.9 million) will be invested in preparing for the start of TBR tyre production in the first half of 2011. Production capacity is expected to reach approximately 400 units per day by the second half of 2012.
On January 31 Bridgestone Corporation entered into a definitive agreement to sell 100 per cent of the shares held in its Italian and Chinese steel cord manufacturing subsidiaries to Belgium’s NV Bekaert SA. The manufacturing subsidiaries to be sold are Bridgestone Metalpha Italia S.p.A. (BMI), based in Sardinia, and Guangdong Province based Bridgestone (Huizhou) Steel Cord Co., LTD. (BSSH). As part of this transaction, Bridgestone has entered into a long-term tyre cord supply agreement with Bekaert to ensure a stable supply of quality cord. Bridgestone and Bekaert will complete the transactions once all applicable governmental and regulatory approvals are received. The transaction has an enterprise value of approximately 70 million euros, and is expected to close in the second quarter of 2010.

Recycling technology company RockTron beat internationally renowned entrants to win Rushlight’s fossil fuels award on 28 January. The award was reportedly presented in recognition of the company’ s “spectacular leap forward in Fly Ash Recycling.” This technology, says RockTron, has the potential to help cut man-made CO2 emissions by up to 2 per cent whilst reducing the need for fossil fuel usage. The Award recognises technological advancement or innovation that has made a significant contribution to the reduction in environmental impact of fossil fuel usage.
Toyo Tire & Rubber Co. has announced it will invest $9.8 million to establish a wholly-owned subsidiary company at Zhangjiagang City, Jiangsu Province, China, to manufacture passenger and light truck tyres.
Once again, Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations plans to grab the attention of viewers of Super Bowl XLIV, which airs 7 February on CBS from Dolphin Stadium in Miami, Florida, reports Tire Review. BATO will unveil two new Bridgestone brand tyre commercials during the game, in addition to the brand serving as the title sponsor of the Super Bowl XLIV Halftime Show featuring The Who. The Richards Group, a Dallas-based independent advertising agency, created the 30-second commercials, one of which will run at the end of the first quarter, while the other will air during the third quarter.
Staff at a Kwik-Fit centre in York recently discovered they had been working under a cannabis growing factory. Unbeknownst to them 387 cannabis plants with a street value of up to £46,000 had been growing in the space above the branch in York. According to a report in the Yorkshire Post, workers only made the surprising discovery when water leaked through the ceiling and they went up to investigate the damage. The news made the papers today (29 January) after Vietnamese illegal immigrant Duc Van Tran, an illegal immigrant from Vietnam admitted conspiracy to produce cannabis in a case at Leeds Crown Court. Tran has been jailed for 20 months.
Earlier this month, Apollo Tyres brought together its high performing business partners for an India conclave, reports Tire Review. Partners qualified for the event by achieving challenging sales targets in the commercial vehicle tyre category in 2009. The initiative, organized under Apollo’s International Marketing Program for exports out of India, was christened “Jai Ho” after one of the Oscar-winning lyrics from the movie Slumdog Millionaire, and literally meaning “may you be victorious.” The reward for this victory was an all-expense-paid, three-day incentive trip to India.
Avon Tyres has put its name to two regional Formula Ford Championships for 2010; they will be known as the Avon Tyres Club Formula Ford Northern Championship and Avon Tyres Club Formula Ford Southern Championship. Having been the control tyre throughout Formula Ford 1600 racing for many years, the sponsorship of the two Club Championships, organised by the British Racing & Sports Car Club (BRSCC), was a natural progression for the brand: “Our tyres are synonymous with Formula Ford so we are delighted to support the marque’s leading entry level championship,” said Roger Everson, sales and marketing manager for the Avon Tyres Racing Division.
As a brand somewhat synonymous with glamour and flare, Pirelli and the Autosport International Show are an excellent fit. The Italian brand took the opportunity of the 2010 show to display its vast array of motorsport tyres and Pirelli seemed sure that one particular model was turning the most heads among the 85,000 visitors. The P Zero Trofeo proved, in Pirelli’s opinion, to be “the toast” of this year’s show.

Present at the Autosport International Engineering Show, Oxfordshire company Stack displayed its battery-free TPMS systems, which it believes “completely redefines tyre pressure monitoring in motorsport”. Based on patented SAW sensor technology, the company says problems associated with mounting batteries and complicated electronics in sensors on wheels eliminated.
The much-hyped snow storm that turned much of the United Kingdom white earlier in the month did not prevent Autosport International, Europe’s largest motorsport trade show, from celebrating its 20th anniversary in style at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, UK, on 14-17 January 2010. Reportedly, over 85,000 visitors made the trip to the West Midlands, helping trade to increase by 10 per cent on the previous year in spite of the weather. Perhaps a general thawing in the global economic situation was more on the minds of visitors than the snow drifts hastily formed by NEC staff clearing the car parks for visitors when Tyres & Accessories arrived on Thursday 14 January to take in stands representing tyre manufacturers Dunlop, Pirelli, Yokohama and Hoosier Tire, as well as the many other automotive products and servicing equipment on display.
With over 85,000 visitors coming through the doors across the four-day Autosport International Show from 14-17 January, Dunlop was keen to welcome as many as possible onto its large 464 sqm stand. The brand featured a variety of live and interactive environment including a selection of cars from championships such as the British Touring Car Championship, Le Mans 24 hours, Dunlop Sport Maxx Cup Radical, FRT Moto2 Bike, Formula Ford and Autosport Young Guns.
The JMW Motorsport Aston Martin Vantage GT2, which will race in the 2010 Le Mans Series was described as a real crowd-pleaser. Fully Dunlop branded, the car was one of the main features on the stand sitting underneath the famous Dunlop Bridge which was replicated on the stand. Next to these spectacular vehicles, Dunlop hosted its own media stage where racing stars such as Colin Turkington, Johnny Herbert and Matt Neal were interviewed throughout the show.

Production figures released on 27 January show that Sibur’s tyre production fell 28 per cent in 2009 (7602 tonnes, compared with 10,650 tonnes in 2008). The news is set against a 27.3 per cent increase in rubber sales and a three per cent increased in the large group’s petrochemical product output. As a group, Sibur reported consolidated receipts 152.5 billion rubles (£2.550 billion; 2.948 billion euros; $4.116 billion) for 2009, down 12 per cent compared with 173.5 billion rubles (£3.540 billion; 4.092 billion euros; $5.713 billion) in 2008.
