Independent brake testing highlights Delphi strengths

Delphi reports having achieved outstanding results in a recent independent evaluation of original equipment (OE) braking systems, sharing that “rigorous testing” of its none asbestos organic (NAO) ceramic and low metallic pads against six “top-tier brands” highlighted Delphi’s “exceptional performance across key metrics,” including dust emission, noise levels, and pedal consistency.
“We’re proud to lead the industry with braking products that not only meet but exceed the highest standards,” says Carl Lester, global product line manager at Delphi. “These results are a testament to the quality and reliability of Delphi brakes.”
Although Delphi doesn’t disclose who conducted the testing, it has summarised the results in a downloadable document.
Testing environment & methodology
The independent tester fitted the Delphi and competitor products to four Mercedes A-class cars and evaluated these in Mojacar, Spain, a location chosen for its 3,180 hours of annual sunshine and minimal rainfall. During dust emission testing, each vehicle covered 4,000 kilometres on a dry 200-kilometre circuit that included both mountainous and urban driving conditions.
Delphi says its NAO pad demonstrated superior performance, surpassing all premium competitors in minimising brake dust emissions. “This translates to less wear on the brakes, reduced environmental impact, and significant cost savings for vehicle owners,” explains Lester. “Notably, Delphi’s low metallic pads outperformed several premium brands, producing half the dust.”
Noise testing provided the Delphi brake pads with another opportunity to excel. They achieved a 9.8 noise index, with 10 representing complete silence. “Delphi brake pads benefit from a special noise-absorbing 3-millimetre underlayer,” Lester notes. “It reduces noise above 70db by 83 per cent and heat transfer to the brake fluid by up to 22 per cent, preventing it from boiling and helping to maintain effective braking.”
In tests of pedal consistency, Delphi’s brake pads delivered zero deviation in brake pedal feel, pedal stroke, and initial response. “Braking consistency is key to driver confidence, which is why the feel of the pedal underfoot should be predictable and reliable,” Lester adds. “Delphi had the most consistent results with zero deviations across the board.”
Commitment to OE standards
As a tier-1 OE manufacturer, Delphi ensures its brake pad components are designed, manufactured, and tested to meet the same standards of performance, consistency, and longevity as original equipment.
