TPMS changes a positive step, says Goodyear

New legislation applicable to Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) will come into effect within the European Union from 7 July. The new law outlines the minimum operating standard for TPMS devices, including the data that’s displayed to drivers in real-time.
From 7 July, all new commercial vehicles registered in the EU must be equipped with a working TPMS on all tires, including trailers, at the point of registration. The most significant element of the new legislation is that any detected change in tyre pressure greater than 20 per cent must now be displayed inside the vehicle. This will warn drivers of a potential tyre issue before the tyre becomes dangerous or at risk of damage.
With the new legislation quickly approaching, Goodyear has expressed its support for the changes, describing these as a “positive step towards making all commercial vehicles safer and more efficient.” Goodyear has offered TPMS solutions to its customers for over a decade and, according to a survey conducted several years ago, has aided some European transport companies in their efforts to reduce tyre-related breakdowns by up to 90 per cent with the support of its TPMS solution.
Supporting safety & efficiency
“With our long-term expertise in this field, we stand ready to serve companies in need in the light of the upcoming legislation,” says Yves Sinner, head of product management for Goodyear’s Fleet Mobility Solutions. “Our TPMS is designed to support safety, improve fuel efficiency, and extend tyre life by providing real-time tyre pressure and temperature monitoring with the support of user-friendly and smart mobile applications.
“Goodyear has strong heritage regarding connected tyre technologies, and we are well positioned to offer customers the full-service package including sensor installation, maintenance and data services,” Sinner adds. “Thanks to that fleets can get the most up-to-date Goodyear solution and professional post-installation service through our TruckForce network.”
Delivering peace of mind
Goodyear confirms that its TPMS solution already goes beyond the new legislation’s requirements. It uses advanced algorithms to predict certain issues before they arise, which enhances fuel efficiency, boosts safety and extends tyre life through cutting-edge data collection methods. While the legislation requires TPMS to alert the driver to a pressure issue, Goodyear TPMS can also alert the back office who can then assist the driver in taking the right actions. Goodyear has collaborated with existing partners to ensure seamless integration and compliance with the upcoming regulations. The company fully understands the importance of proactive measures in enhancing road safety and fleet efficiency and is committed to playing important part in this initiative.
“Our TPMS solution is engineered to deliver reliable performance and peace of mind, meeting the requirements set forth by the new regulations. It’s an important part of our Goodyear Total Mobility offering which comprises the performance of Goodyear’s premium tyres, the efficiency of Goodyear’s innovative tyre management solutions, and the expertise of the Goodyear Mobility Network,” summarises Piotr Czyżyk, managing director, Fleet Mobility EMEA at Goodyear.
