Swedish energy saving website publicises best label ratings

A consumer website aimed at improving awareness of energy saving products has begun listing tyre models with AA EU labels. Comprising Pirelli’s Cinturato P7 Blue in three XL sizes – the first AA tyre on the market, launched at Reifen 2012 – and Bridgestone’s October-launched AA-rated Ecopia EP001S, www.toptensverige.se (Topten Sweden) has begun to list tyres among what it believes to be benchmark products. The Topten online service, present in 17 countries in Europe as well as in China and the United States, aims to make transparent and independent assessments of goods and services, and has included the four tyre sizes as its first foray into the product area.

2013 F1 tyres need a broader operating window – Button

Perhaps Pirelli’s 2012 tyres pushed Jenson’s buttons a little. Autosport.com shares that the McLaren driver, who finished this season in fifth place, believes Pirelli needs to make the F1 playing field “a bit more fair” by focusing on widening the operating window of its 2013 tyre compounds.

Pirelli launches e-learning for dealer training

Pirelli has launched an online version of Pirelli Tyre Campus, which is aimed at helping its dealers “become better tyre consultants for their customers”. Through e-learning, Pirelli says it will provide a step-by-step educational process where users can access a series of videos, interactive sessions and engaging tests about the manufacturer and its products.

Pirelli names F1 Experience winner

Pirelli UK has announced the winner of its Formula One Experience. The top prize of tickets to the 2013 Formula One British Grand Prix and a trip for two to the Red Bull Racing factory has been won by Ben Flynn from Warrington.

Latest Pirelli Key Point conference a success, says tyre maker

Pirelli UK Tyres shares that the Pirelli Key Point conference it held earlier this month was well received, with more than 25 customers attending a two-day event that culminated in a visit to the Bentley Motors factory in Crewe. Pirelli Key Point is an industry accreditation scheme that puts independent tyre dealerships through a stringent auditing process in order to gain accreditation and take advantage of a number of business benefits. Pirelli UK renamed its former Driver retail scheme to Pirelli Key Point in January in order to bring it in line with Pirelli European retail strategy.

Rutter dominant in Macau, taking eighth victory

Michael Rutter secured his place in the history books taking an eighth victory in Macau and dominating the two-wheel action. Using the latest generation Pirelli Diablo Superbike slick tyres from the company’s ‘road race’ programme, Rutter opted for a harder rear compound for his SMT Honda Fireblade which lasted throughout this unique race at the former Portuguese colony. Runner-up Martin Jessopp (Riders Ducati) chose the softer option rear to record a fastest lap at this final International event of the year.

Pirelli ready to confirm ongoing F1 supply

The 2012 Formula One season has just ended, but Pirelli is eager to know sooner rather than later whether its services will be needed after next year. Autosport writes that Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery would be happy for the question of Pirelli’s F1 involvement beyond the current three-year contract to be settled quickly.

Pirelli unveils charity-themed 2013 Calendar

The latest edition of the world’s most famous tyre calendar has been launched in Rio de Janeiro, and Pirelli has given the world a peek its artwork. Within the 2013 Pirelli Calendar are 23 photographs of 11 actresses, singers and models – all fully clothed this time – plus nine images of “daily life and two photos entirely composed of graffiti and murals.

31,800 race tyres and 314 pasta dishes – Pirelli’s 2012 F1 experience

According to Pirelli, during the 2012 Formula One season the tyre maker supplied teams with a total of 31,800 race tyres (22,500 dry tyres and 9,300 wet tyres) plus an additional 6,600 tyres for testing. A quarter of all tyres delivered were soft compound, while medium proved the second most popular fitment and accounted for 21 per cent of all tyres. Intermediate tyres accounted for a further 18 per cent, while hard, wet and supersoft supplies were 17 per cent, 11 per cent and six per cent respectively. Two per cent of all tyres supplied were development tyres. The average lifespan of dry compound tyres this season was 180 kilometres, while wet compound tyres lasted 140 kilometres on average.

Zafco opens extended head office facility

Zafco, the United Arab Emirates-based importer & exporter of tyres, batteries and automotive lubricants, has inaugurated its new office extension in Dubai. The opening of the facility, located in the Jebel Ali Free Zone (Jafza), was marked by a celebration on 22 November. Senior officials from Jafza, shipping firm DP World, Dubai Customs and several banks joined Zafco’s staff at the event. Zafco described the inauguration as a “new milestone in the company’s journey of ‘Growing Together’ with its business partners.”

Teams get first taste of Pirelli’s 2013 tyres

The first taste of Pirelli’s 2013 tyres for teams came during free practice in Brazil, with the Italian firm bringing two extra sets of prototype tyres in addition to the usual allocation. The teams used the 2013 prototype tyres, which were distinguished by orange writing on the sidewalls, in the morning session. The prototype tyres seen in Brazil have a different structure compared to the 2012 tyres, using the current hard compound, but with a quicker warm-up time as well as deliberately faster degradation.

Vettel, Alonso prove class in fascinating F1 season

Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel claimed his third consecutive world title at the dramatic Brazilian Grand Prix, as McLaren’s Jenson Button took his third win of the season. Vettel stopped four times in his sixth place finish, having lost time with a spin and sustained damage following contact with another competitor on the opening lap. His nearest championship rival Fernando Alonso could only finish second behind Button, meaning his valiant season in what was largely thought of as a comparatively uncompetitive Ferrari ended four points short of victory. Vettel became the youngest ever triple world champion on Pirelli’s P Zero Silver hard and P Zero White medium tyres, with the Cinturato Green intermediates playing their part in damp conditions.

Repositioning taking place at the top of Pirelli

There is a governance battle going on at the upper echelons of Italian tyremaker Pirelli, according to various news sources. According to the Financial Times, Marco Tronchetti Provera, chairman and chief executive of Pirelli has invited two private equity groups to buy out competing shareholders in what is being described as “an effort to shorten the chain of command at the group.”

Pirelli to invest 105 million euros in Slatina, Romania plant

Pirelli will invest 105 million euros in its Romanian plant over the next five years, the manufacturer has announced. The investment, which is supported by around 35 million euros of state aid, is designed to increase the size of the factory – from 180,000sqm to 200,000sqm – the number of employees by 500 to 3,500 in total, and its capacity. Initial estimates say the company plans to raise the current production figure of 8.5 million tyres per year to 10 million at the end of 2013 and 13 million by the end of 2017.

F1 title conclusion, Pirelli 2013 prototype at Brazilian Grand Prix

Pirelli approaches the final round of the Formula One season with the championship yet to be decided, thanks to eight different winners from the season so far – seven of them coming in the first seven races. Just like last year, the last race of the season will be held at the legendary Interlagos circuit in Sao Paulo, and Pirelli has nominated the P Zero Silver hard tyre and P Zero White medium tyre for the title decider. The teams will also have two extra sets of next year’s prototype tyres at their disposal for Friday’s free practice sessions, in order to give them an idea of the characteristics of the 2013 tyres.
