Yokohama to Enter Rubber Processing Industry?
Press sources say that Yokohama Rubber is considering getting into the rubber processing sector in an effort to secure supply of natural rubber and to reduce rising raw material costs. General Manager of Corporate Purchasing and Strategic Sourcing, Keiichi Sekiya, said the Yokohama wants to get closer to the rubber plantation people, adding: it doesnt mean we want to get into the plantation business. Should the company buy some land for growing rubber trees, this would only be for research and development purposes, he said, with the results shared with rubber growers.

(Akron/Tire Review) According to news reports, Continental Tire North America (CTNA) presented its last, best and final offer to United Steelworkers officials yesterday. The tyre maker’s master contract with the union expires Apr. 30. The company said its latest proposal was its ninth in an attempt to secure cost cuts of some $32 million at its Charlotte, N.C., plant. Union officials said they are reviewing the proposal, and plan to resume meetings with CTNA this Friday.

(Akron/Tire Review) Not surprisingly, the United Steelworkers (USW), which is facing difficult contract and cutback talks with Continental Tire North America (CTNA), publicly “welcomed” news that Titan International is seeking to buy CTNA’s Bryan, Ohio, OTR plant. The union had refrained from making any public statements regarding the plant’s previous suitors – Roesler Group and Pensler Capital – though. And, the USW’s support of Titan comes after the two parties spent the last five years at virtual war, including a 40-plus month strike.

A study carried out by Continental revealed that 25 per cent of motorists in Germany frequently drive faster than the legal speed limit. However, when it comes to assessing other motorists behaviour, 92 per cent believed that other motorists speed often, very often, or always. It will probably come as little surprise that younger drivers are the worst offenders, with almost half of the 18-25 age group exceeding speed limits.

Following Michelins decision to close its BFGoodrich plant in Kitchener, Ontario, the United Steelworkers has closed its offices in Nova Scotia, says the Halifax Chronicle Herald. The union has been trying to form a union at Michelins three Nova Scotia plants for some time; indeed, during Michelins 36-year history in Nova Scotia, a dozen or more attempts at unionisation have failed. The USW says that efforts will continue but will now be centralised from the offices at Moncton, New Brunswick.
