Tyretorque.com has reported a 25 per cent growth in business for the second quarter of 2006. Having started the year with a first quarter that delivered growth of 2 per cent less than target, the company is said to be delighted with the record growth achieved in the second quarter.

(Akron/Tire Review) The United Steelworkers’ (USW) master contracts with Michelin North America, Goodyear and Bridgestone/Firestone expired Sunday at midnight without incident and without a walkout by union workers. But twice over the weekend the union and Michelin agreed to extensions of their contract – one 24-hour extension on Saturday and a 48-hour extension on Sunday. The contract, which covers Michelin’s unionized plants in Tuscaloosa and Opelika, Ala., and Fort Wayne, Ind., is now scheduled to end at midnight on July 25.

These tyres were originally recalled in August 2000 and October 2001 as part of the massive tyre recall in connection with Ford Motor Co. SUV and light trucks.

Jato Dynamics analysis of new car registrations in the EU and EFTA region for the first five months of 2006 shows that the overall European market for new cars rose by 2.7 per cent compared with the same period in 2005, to a total volume of 6,918,355 units. Year-to-date (YTD) growth was significantly higher than in April, due to an overall rise of 10.6 per cent in the European market for new cars in May 2006 (a total volume for the month of 1,455,421 units).

Jaguar Cars has selected two Dunlop SP Sport performance tyres for its new supercharged XKR, a 420-horsepower sporting Grand Tourer. Dunlop tyres, standard on the 2007 Jaguar XK, have also been specified for the XKR, which delivers 120 more horsepower. The XKR will jet to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds; the car arrives in showrooms by year’s end. The convertible model takes 5 seconds.
