SRI Increases Prices
SRI Tire Trading Ltd., the tyre export wing of the Sumitomo Rubber’ Group, will increase the prices of the company’s Dunlop, Falken and Sumitomo brands in Asia, the Near and Middle East, North America, Central and South America, Africa and Pacific nations. In Europe the price of Falken and Sumitomo brand passenger car, light truck, truck and bus and motorcycle tyres will also increase. The price hikes are expected to take place at the beginning in September and will be in the range of 5 to 10 per cent.

Weld Wheel Industries, a Kansas City maker of high-performance automotive wheels, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. A Kansas City Star report said the 21-year-old family-owned business lost $1.1 million in the first six months of this year on net sales of $21.8 million. The bankruptcy petition said the company has total assets of $31.6 million. Weld Wheels has signed an asset-sale agreement with American Racing Equipment Inc. in southern California. American Racing will pay $17 million and assume various debt and lease obligations, according to local news sources.

The Port of Felixstowe recently welcomed the arrival of nine rubber-tyred gantry cranes from Zhenhua Port Machinery Company (ZPMC) of Shanghai. The arrival of the new machinery means that the Port has invested in forty-one gantry cranes from ZPMC since 2002, bringing the total number on Trinity Terminal to over 100.

Amerityre Corporation has entered into a manufacturing license agreement with Qingdao Qizhou Rubber Co., Ltd., Qingdao, China. The agreement grants the Chinese company a license to initially manufacture polyurethane elastomer retreads for three large-size tyres for mining applications, using Amerityre’s innovative retreading process, in exchange for a $400,000 license fee payable over the next two years.

The Davanagere, India district administration has banned the use of tyres as fuel in puffed rice industries from 27 August, Deputy Commissioner M B Dyaberi told New India Press. The district administration has identified 60 puffed rice industries for installation of wood gasifiers and the list has been handed over to Puffed Rice Industry Owners Association, the deputy commissioner added.

Michelin recently launched the XMCL, a tyre designed for compact construction machinery such as backhoes, compact loaders, and telescopic handlers used in farming applications. According to the manufacturer, the XMCL offers two fundamental advantages over its predecessor (the XM27) it lasts up to 46 per cent longer, and its crown and sidewalls are up to 10 per cent more resistant to punctures. Among the features that make the new tyre tougher are deeper lugs, steel casing belts and protective sidewall ribs.

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. is asking US state official for millions of tax dollars to modernize its Fayetteville plant that is at risk of closing. State Rep. Rick Glazier, a Democrat from Fayetteville, confirmedt that local and company officials are discussing options to help upgrade the 37-year-old plant. With about 2,600 employees, the factory is the third-largest private employer in the county, the Fayetteville Observer reported. The move is widely seen as a hint that Goodyear is considering closing the factory.

The Ambattur unit of Dunlop India Ltd (DIL) is set to start production this week, a month ahead of the schedule, according to company chairman, Pawan Kumar Ruia. Ruia said initial start-up capacity of 40 tonnes daily would be ramped up to 130 tonnes a day by December. The first tyres to roll out would be for light commercial vehicles and truck tyres, while tractor tyres would be produced later.

Despite wet weather, up to 25,000 people lined the streets of Manchester on Sunday 13 August as six Cooper-equipped A1GP race cars roared around the city centre, reaching speeds of up to 70mph. A1 Teams Great Britain, Australia, China, Ireland, Lebanon and Malaysia drove along a purpose built 1.5km course as part of the Sky Festival, promoting the broadcast of the entire 2006/07 A1GP race season live on Sky Sports in the UK. The calendar of 13 A1GP races will be broadcast to over 100 countries around the world across a network of more than 40 television partners.
