Consumer Reports Releases Performance Tyre Ratings
(Akron/Tire Review) Consumer Reports has released ratings on performance all-season tyres. In the H-Rated category, Consumer Reports ranked the Dunlop SP Sport 5000, the Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S, and the Falken Ziex ZE 512 as the top three performers. The top-three V-rated tyres, according to Consumer Reports, were the Michelin Pilot HX MXM4, the Yokohama Avid V4s and the Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S.

Hisao Suganuma, the technical manager of Bridgestone’s Formula One tyre group will return to work at the Japanese’ manufacturers motorsport group in Japan in 2007 as part of the company’s staff rotation programme. Suganuma was appointed as F1 technical manager in 2001 and was a key figure in Ferrari’s four F1 world championship victories from 2001-2004. In 2007 Bridgestone will be the sole tyre supplier in Formula One and has appointed Kees van der Grint and Jun Matsuzaki as joint technical managers in view of the increased workload.

Mytyres.co.uk, the Delticom AG owned online retailer, is promoting the use of winter tyres by offering products priced as low as £18.10 per tyre. While it is not clear exactly which product is priced at this level, Delticom’s house brand is Star Performer produced by Nankang. Delticom published details of the promotion in a recent email which also included consumer information on air pressure and irregular wear advice. It even recommended a tread depth of at least 4mm for ideal tread depth.

German tyre distributor Reifen Lindiger has been producing Bandag retreaded tyres since 1971. In May, Bandag honoured its loyal partner and celebrated the 35th anniversary of this ongoing business relationship. Christian Gross, production manager, was presented with a commemorative plaque from Ralf Schnelle, Bandag regional sales manager on the Bandag stand at Reifen Messe, the biennial tyre fair in Essen, Germany. Reifen Lindinger is located in the centre of St. Ingbert, Saarland, Germany. The company is a member of Point-S Deutschland, a cooperation of over 200 independent tyre distributors, totalling more than 350 service outlets. Founded in 1921 by Adolf Lindinger as a tyre curing, repair shop and wholesaler, the family company is currently run by Ulrich Ernst, the son-in-law of Karl-Heinz Lindinger, the founder’s sons.

The Pentagon has honoured Abraham Pannikottu and his American Engineering Group team for designing airless tyres for the Stryker armoured vehicle. Pannikottu and his team have toiled for three years to come up with the tyres, which can run without deflating even after being shot. At a function at the Pentagon, Claude M Bolton, Jr, assistant secretary of the army for acquisition, logistics and technology, presented Abraham with the 2006 Army Small Business Innovation Research award and the Small Business Technology Transfer Quality Award.

Finkelmeier will report to Larry Mason, Goodyears North American president of consumer tyres. Finkelmeier most recently served at Akebono North America as executive vice president, global strategy and business development OE/OES sales. Prior to that post he was president of ThyssenKrupp Steel North America, in Detroit.

Michelin North America (Canada) Inc. has reached a significant milestone in Nova Scotia with the celebration of 35 years of manufacturing. It was back in 1971 when the Pictou County facility produced its first tyre and the Bridgewater plant its first steel cord product. Two years later, Bridgewater produced its first passenger tyre. Then, in 1982 Michelin Waterville began producing tyres for the heavy-weight market.
