Michelin To Market Tyre Pressure Monitoring System In Canada
Michelin North America will soon be marketing WABCO’s Integrated Vehicle Tire Pressure Monitoring System (IVTM) in Canada. The system has been available to European hauliers for the past three years and it will be available in Canada early next year. The IVTM system offers real-time pressure information; an on-board monitor gives the driver a continuous readout of tyre pressure and can warn of incorrect pressure and slow leaks, thanks to an algorithm that constantly compares information between and across axles.

A mere two months after Dunlop Indias Ambattur factory restarted production, a cut in power supply has halted work yet again. The plant had recently reopened after eight years when the Ruia Group acquired the ailing tyre company. The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) cut supply to the plant at the end of October as current consumption charges for September were unpaid, thus halting production at the factory.

(Las Vegas/Tire Review) Kumho Tire USA’s scented tyre, which was introduced as a concept at last year’s SEMA Show, is reportedly coming to fruition. A lavendar scented version of the tyre will hit the market early next year in three sizes, Kumho said. Based on Kumho’s Ecsta DX, the tyre features specialty scented compounds that replaces the smell of tyre rubber with the scent of lavender. The compound includes heat resistant oils that add the scent to the tyre. Kumho has tried a number of different scents, including lavender, jasmine, rosemary and neroli. According to Rick Brennan, Kumho’s brand director, the company is bringing the DX aroma tyre to the market to help build brand awareness and differentiate Kumho in the marketplace. The new DX is targeted at female consumers who drive sedans such as the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and Ford Taurus. The scented Ecsta DX Aroma tyre will initially be available in sizes 205/60R16, 215/60R16 and 235/60R16.

September marked the Golden Jubilee of Italian company Matteuzzi and the event was celebrated with a gala dinner at the companys headquarters. The guest list included past and present employees – many of the latter having in excess of 25 years service with the company and also present was Matteuzzis first employee, who left to become an artist. Elisa, Giulia and Alberto represented the third generation of the Matteuzzi family.

Sapphire Energy Recovery has announced that its new Manchester tyre processing facility is now taking truck tyres for onward processing. The new truck tyre disposal service at the Manchester site, came into operation on 16 October and is expected to handle hundreds of truck tyres each week. (Las Vegas/Tire Review) Kumho Tire USA officially launched its latest touring tyre line – the Solus KR21 – during the SEMA Show. The Solus KR21 replaces Kumho’s 732 and 795 products. Kumho said the Solus KR21 delivers a refined balance of high mileage, low noise and exceptional ride comfort, along with all-season traction and confidence-inspiring handling. The KR21 will be a “megaline” tyre, which Kumho said will reduces the number of SKUs a dealer will have to carry. The KR21 carries a T speed rating and a UTQG of 600, and will be available in the first quarter of 2007 in nearly 50 sizes, ranging from 155/80R13 to 235/65R18.

Pirelli & C SpA CEO Carlo Buora is resigning from his posts with the Pirelli Group in order to concentrate on his commitments at Telecom Italia SpA. According to reports Buora was appointed as Telecom Italia vice-chairman in September, in addition to his long-standing role as a CEO at the telecom firm. Pirelli is the largest shareholder in Telecom Italia with an 18 per cent stake via its 80 per cent holding unit Olimpia SpA.

(Akron/Tire Review) NHTSA reportedly has proposed maintaining confidentiality of certain vehicle safety data uncovered by consumer complaints, warranty claims, and information on vehicles involved in deaths and injuries. The agency said the release of such information “will cause substantial competitive harm and will impair the governments ability to obtain this information in the future if released. The release of such information had been included as part of the TREAD Act’s early reporting provisions. Automakers, auto suppliers and tyremakers argued that release of such information without verification of any claims could lead to incorrect conclusions.

Polyurethane tyre production company, Amerityre has published news that it plans to work with Phelps Dodge. The announcement follows the company’s OTR retread license agreement with Qingdao Qizhou Rubber Company of China, made in August. “In August 2006, we entered into a memorandum of understanding with a specialty tyre manufacturer. The manufacturer will be evaluating our polyurethane elastomer material for retreading medium radial truck tyres and certain sizes of OTR tyres. We also recently entered into an agreement with Phelps Dodge to evaluate polyurethane elastomer retreads for large OTR tyres. The Phelps Dodge programme is part of a broader plan to explore constructing an OTR retread production facility. In this area, well continue to work with other companies to establish similar agreements.”
