Falken wins first Euro OE supply deal on Volkswagen Up!
Falken has won the original equipment contract to provide its bespoke Sincera SN831A tyres to Volkswagen’s city car, the Up!. The German manufacturer has thus become the first European automobile manufacturer to commit to the Sumitomo Rubber Industries brand’s high performance products, and specify the Japanese tyre producer as an OEM supplier. The announcement was confirmed at 2012 Reifen Tyre Show in Essen.

Jon Powell has completed the epic Crumball Rally across Europe on a set of Bridgestone Turanza tyres, raising £2,000 for the Friends of Kennel Lane School in Berkshire, where his son is a pupil. Designed to be a low cost event, encouraging drivers to complete the course in a £200 ‘banger’, the Rally ran over three days from 10-12 May. In addition to supplying Powell with the rubber that would see him through the event, Bridgestone also made a £250 donation to his fund.

Farrell Dolan has replaced Peter Tye as retail director UK at Goodyear Dunlop. Dolan, who has over 20 years’ experience in the automotive industry, and more than six with Goodyear Dunlop, will be responsible for the business’ retail operations across its HiQ franchise brand and network of retail partners. Former retail director Tye resigned from the company to pursue other opportunities, according to Goodyear Dunlop. Commenting on Tye’s departure George Rietbergen, Goodyear Dunlop UK & Ireland general manager, says: “Peter made a great contribution to our retail business and he leaves with our best wishes. Together with Farrell and the team, we are now focused on the exciting future ahead for our retail division.”

The China-based tyre manufacturer has chosen Pneus Lanoraie Inc as its partner in the area and will now offer what it calls a “one-stop repairing and retreading service” to its Canadian customers in Quebec Province and neighbouring territories.

Michelin will use the occasion of Cereals 2012 to exhibit its largest ever farm tyre; a new dimension in the AxioBib range designed for high horsepower tractors. The Michelin AxioBib IF 900/60 R 42 has a diameter of 2.15 metres and will be launched onto the UK replacement tyre market in July 2012. The flotation tyre, using the French manufacturer’s Improved Flexion technology, is suited to demanding crop farming operations such as ploughing, where farmers and contractors are increasingly utilising larger machines to plough fields faster.

Cooper Tire & Rubber Company has launched a new addition to its performance winter tyre range, the WeatherMaster WSC – which stands for winter and snow confidence. The tyre’s directional tread design and high-silica polymer, low-modulus tread compound are designed to provide increased grip on icy, slushy and wet surfaces. It is launched in sizes suitable for SUVs and some passenger cars, including the BMW X3, Lexus RX350/450, Mazda 3 and 5, Toyota Rav-4 and Nissan Murano.

The manufacturer and sole tyre supplier to the series says Silverstone’s speed and susceptibility to cold weather make it one of the most challenging circuits on the calendar in terms of tyre development. With rain a distinct possibility, the brand’s wet tyre soft (main) and hard (alternative) compounds may also come into play.

The UK’s major centre of excellence for vehicle research and development also houses the world’s ninth biggest tyre company, GITI Tire’s European Technical Centre; in May Tyres & Accessories joined representatives of the company and its UK dealers in visiting the site for a demonstration of its current high performance passenger tyre range. With an eye for the spectacular, the company’s test drivers at MIRA demonstrated the performance characteristics of current products such as the Champiro HPY, fitted to a BMW M3, and the Champiro HPX on an Ariel Atom for fast laps showing the tyres’ dry handling ability. Attendees at the event, which included representatives from the company’s exclusive UK distributor Micheldever, also tried for themselves the Champiro 228 on the wet circles track, and the Adventuro M/T off-road tyre in Mira’s 4x4 testing track. Contrasting with the high performance demonstrations was an amusing competitive element featuring a Fiat Panda, a parking cage and the unmistakable smell of burning clutch.

McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton became the seventh winner from seven Grands Prix this year, overtaking Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel and Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso during the last eight laps to claim a spectacular victory by 2.5 seconds. Former Pirelli test driver, Romain Grosjean drove his Lotus to a career-best second place, having made a one-stop strategy work to his advantage. Vettel pitted with seven laps to go, and Alonso dropped back, having used the same strategy as Grosjean, pitting only two laps earlier.
