Ceat to Invest Almost £100M in New Facilities

The managing director of Ceat Ltd took the opportunity to elaborate upon his company’s plans for a new radial project and OTR facility during a press conference in the Indian city of Mumbai. Mr. Paras K Chowdhary said Ceat will invest a total of 8 billion rupees (£98.4 million) in the greenfield projects – 5 billion (£61.5 million) in the radial project and the remainder in the OTR plant, which will be located in the western Indian state of Maharastra. About 1.2 billion rupees (£14.8) from the sale of Ceat land in Mumbai will be used to fund the projects.

Thatcham Kitemark Voted Best Safety Initiative

The Thatcham BSI Kitemark, introduced in February 2007, was voted Best Safety Initiative of the Year at the Fleet News Awards on March 10. To be nominated for an award in this category, entries had to show a proactive attempt to improve safety, produce results and make a difference.

The Thatcham BSI Kitemark for Vehicle Body Repair was developed by all bodies interested in the collision repair sector, and as such took into account all issues influencing safe and quality repairs. With vehicles chosen by fleet managers for their ability to protect occupants, it is crucial that those involved in crashed are repaired back to pre-accident condition, with the integrity of the vehicle maintained. To date over 63 repairers have gained Kitemark accreditation and more than 250 have applied.

Goodyear Honoured with Award for UK Recycling

New Sizes Increase Conti’s Summer PCR Range

Newly announced sizes have broadened Continental’s summer passenger car tyre range for 2008. The company’s top ContiSportContact 3 model is now available in a total of 138 sizes and 111 size options are included in the ContiPremiumContact 2 range for medium and larger sized vehicles.

The ContiSportContact 3 was developed with the manufacturers and drivers of sporty cars in mind, and Conti thus emphasised braking distances, handling and wet road performance as the tyre’s key strengths. The range features an additional tread pattern variant for powerful rear-wheel-drive sports cars and yet another tread version for tuning requirements. The Conti sports tyre has received original equipment releases from numerous leading carmakers: Volkswagen has recently started equipping its Passat CC with the self-sealing variant based on ContiSeal technology. Other vehicle manufacturers offer SSR-run-flat variants as standard tyres on wide sections of their model lines.

Pirelli Buys Back 38.9% Share in Tyre Division

Pirelli & C. SpA has confirmed that, on March 11, it reached an agreement to acquire the entire share capital of Speed SpA. Speed, a company held by the financial institutions Intesa Sanpaolo, Banca Leonardo Group, UniCredit, One Equity Partners, JP Morgan Group, Lehman Brothers and Mediobanca, has since August 2006 held a 38.9 per cent stake in Pirelli Tyre SpA, which it acquired for 740 million euros. The share was bought back for a cash payment of 434.4 million euros, a sum financed by available liquidity. The purchase price takes into account Speed’s debt of approximately 401.1 million euros. The transaction thus attributes the Pirelli Tyre shareholding, Speed’s sole asset, an equity value of 835.5 million euros.

HiQ to Franchise Off Equity Outlets

HiQ has unveiled plans to “accelerate” the company’s franchise offer by transferring existing company-owned stores into 15 regional zones where Goodyear Dunlop are looking for larger franchise partners to invest in HiQ regionally as well as nationally. The news came in parallel with the launch of HiQ’s sponsorship of this year’s British Touring Car Championship. Company representatives told Tyres & Accessories that the seven figure motorsport investment represents the single largest marketing investment Goodyear Dunlop has committed to the HiQ brand.

In a further twist, HiQ managing director Neil Burrows announced that he and “three members of the management group” are interested in investing into a “significant part” of the network themselves, demonstrating they really are willing to put there money where their mouths are regarding the franchise’s development. Therefore, in the interests of transparency, Neil Burrows and the other three as yet unamed managers will be assigned to special projects (such as managing the BTCC sponsorship deal) within the Goodyear Dunlop group. Following the recent announcement that Robin Sharpe stepped down as Goodyear Dunlop Commercial Director, it now appears that he will manage the HiQ team until the final announcement regarding the franchising of the HiQ equity branches has been announced.

Tyre Groups Highlight Need for Tyre Care in Severe Weather

With wild weather forecast for the UK this week, both TyreSafe and independent tyre fitting network ProTyre have urged motorists to pay special attention to their tyres. “The latest findings from our retail tyre centres and confirmed by TyreSafe, the UK’s leading tyre safety organisation, have revealed that almost a quarter of cars on the road are driving on defective tyres which presents a major risk as standing water builds up on the roads significantly reducing levels of grip and increasing the risk of skidding and the chance of an accident,“ commented Phil Brookes of ProTyre. He added “It is therefore imperative that drivers spend a few minutes checking their tyres before setting off on their journey. It could make all the difference.”

New Sizes For US Yokohama OTR Lines

Yokohama Tire Corp. is unveiling four new OTR sizes at the upcoming 2008 Conexpo-Con/Agg Show in Las Vegas. The new sizes are being added to Yokohama’s RT41T (29.5R25 and 23.5R25) and the RB31T (26.5R25 and 29.5R25). “The RB31 and RT41 have an incredible amount of technology built into them,” said Gary Nash, director of Yokohama’s OTR tyre sales. “These advancements translate into improved performance and longer tyre life, which means equipment spending more time on the job making businesses profitable.”

Michelin Adds to Super Wide Line

Michelin North America has added to its X One super wide line with the new X One XZY3, an all-position tyre for on/off-road applications. The tyre will be unveiled at the upcoming Conexpo-Con/Ag Show in Las Vegas.

Designed to reduce vehicle weight and fuel costs, the Michelin X One XZY3 super wide features a special chip and cut resistant tread compound, the company said, and an original tread depth of 23/32 with enhanced stone drilling protection and a reinforced bead package. The X One XZY3 tyre is available in a 445/55R22.5 size. (Tire Review/Akron)

Apollo Capacity Increases Ready by Mid-2009

Apollo Tyres makes no secret of its intention to become a market leader in India’s passenger car tyre segment, and during a press conference in Chennai the company’s head of India Operations, Satish Sharma, outlined the means by which Apollo plans to reach its goal.

Mr. Sharma stated that Apollo’s new Rs 5 billion (£61 million) greenfield facility in Oragadam, near Chennai, will be ready to enter production by June 2009 and have a daily production capacity of 30,000 passenger car tyres. The capacity expansion at Apollo’s Baroda plant, an upgrade costing the company Rs 1.5 billion (£18 million), is also scheduled for completion around that time. When complete, capacity at Baroda will increase by 5,000 units a day to 15,000 units.

European Commission Approves Brose Acquisition of Conti Units

The European Commission has approved the purchase of Continental’s electric motor device and cooling fan businesses by German company Brose. The electric motor device business was acquired by Conti when it purchased the Siemens VDO unit, and its purchase by Brose was agreed upon in mid-December. The business specialises in electric motors for window regulators, anti-lock braking systems, heating/ventilation, engine cooling and electric power steering.

Goodyear Top Tyre Maker in Fortune’s Most Admired List

Goodyear has secured a slot in Fortune magazine’s Most Admired Companies 2008 list. The publication surveyed executives, directors, and securities analysts to compile its list of the companies they esteem the most highly, and Goodyear received the highest ranking of any tyre manufacturer, edging Bridgestone into second place.

The manufacturer has expressed pride in the high score it received in four key attributes: innovation, people management, use of assets and global orientation. Among motor vehicle parts companies appearing on the list, Goodyear was also judged the best in regard to innovation and the quality of its products and services. “This recognition by our industry peers is something for which we are extremely proud,” said Robert J. Keegan, Goodyear chairman and CEO. “Not only did Goodyear lead our industry category, but we were ranked well ahead of our global tyre competitors,” he added.

Pirelli Buy Back Deal Today Say Reports

Italian newspaper La Stampa has reported that Pirelli SpA may announce today that it has repurchased a 38.9 per cent stake in its tyre operations.

The newspaper said Pirelli will pay 440 million euros in cash and assume 400 million in debt to reacquire the portion of Pirelli Tyre that it sold to a group of six banks in 2006. (Tire Review/Akron)

Yokohama’s Vietnam Facility Inaugurated

According to an article published in the Thanh Nien News, Yokohama Rubber officially inaugurated its new Yokohama Tyre Vietnam facility in Binh Duong Province on February 29. This year output at the plant is expected to be around 1.3 million tyres, which will supply both the local and export markets, including Japan. The six hectare site will employ a total of 500 workers, the Vietnamese daily reports.

In 1997, Yokohama Rubber established Yokohama Tyre Vietnam Company as a joint-venture company with Southern Rubber Industry Company (Casumina) and Mitsubishi Corporation, and has manufactured bias tires for light trucks and tires for motorcycles. Yokohama Rubber plans to integrate this company with Yokohama Tire Vietnam Inc.
