Data released by India’s Automotive Tyre Manufacturers’ Association indicates that exports of bus and truck tyres from this country increased 8.9 per cent between April 2007 and January 2008, with a total figure of 2.07 million units sold in this period. Total revenue from exports also grew during this period, by 4.6 per cent to Rs 17.35 billion (£218.4 million).
At this year’s Reifen exhibition, the emphasis for Rema Tip Top Automotive will be on new service concepts. In addition, the company’s complete range of products and services will be on show on the 900 m2 stand and highly qualified specialists will be present to explain and demonstrate these products and services.
There are only a few exhibitors who offer comprehensive system solutions, covering the whole range from high-quality products, through services to training and expertise. As an example of the latter, Rema Tip Top will be demonstrating its new training truck in a further exhibition area near the main stand. The truck provides mobile training concepts with the emphasis placed on runflats and UHP tyres. It also provides companies with a cost-saving option for training on site. The training truck will be the venue of a daily tyre-changing contest, where Germany’s best tyre fitter will be selected. The winners will be awarded attractive prizes, and will also be featured on Rema Tip Top’s website after the show.

Japanese tyre manufacturer, Yokohama, has signalled its intention to “tighten its relationships with business partners and resellers” at the Essen show. “The trade show is seen as a barometer for the tyre sector”, stated Rolf Kurz, the head of Yokohama’s marketing department in Germany adding: “Trends showing up there often influence the entire business for years.” Utilising a new lounge concept, Yokohama wants to make use of the large attendance of the trade show, while creating a relaxed atmosphere for business talks. The Yokohama stand is expected to cover a space of nearly 300 square metres.
Of couse there will be a new tyre on display as well. The Parada Spec-X is available in sizes of up to 24 inches, a fact that underlines Yokohama’s intention to further establish its position in the tuning scene. The tyre, completing the established Parada series, was especially developed to meet the needs of powerful SUVs.
Nokian Tyres has awarded the contract for constructing an additional extension to its Russian facility near St. Petersburg, with work to commence immediately. According to a company press release the 24,500 square metre construction should be ready by March 2009, with the administration facility completed the following November. Earthmoving work necessary for construction began last November.
Kenyan manufacturer Sameer Africa has begun importing tyres from China to meet a strong demand for low priced products in its home market. This, however, says Kenya’s Business Daily newspaper, is a measure placing the company in deeper debt as it must borrow heavily to pay invoices. The company installed a new £84,000 light truck tyre assembly machine last July and also increased capacity, however the company continues to struggle, as it has since changing its name from Firestone to Yana tyres three years ago.
“We were not making enough money from our tyre production unit so we borrowed to finance the importation of tyres that we don’t make” said Sameer managing director, Eric Kimani. The Chinese brands imported, says Mr. Kimani, include Dyna and Triangle. “The tyres are affordable but very durable. When we import we don’t just bring anything, we buy quality,” he added.
More than any other company in the world it is Michelin that – at an early stage – began to produce retreaded truck tyres as part of its industrial operations, and has always understood retreading as an integral part of its new tyre business and incorporated it into all its industrial and marketing activities. The French corporation not only operates its Remix mould-cure production and cooperates with its pre-cure retreading partners across Europe; in the area of retreading Michelin is building on yet another cornerstone – the Laurent group, with its two production sites in Avallon, France, and Berlin, Germany. It is in particular the latter, the smaller location in terms of output, that plays a pivotal role in the ever-important Western and central Europe markets.
Nankang is proceeding with the sale of its factory in the Taiwanese capital, Taipei. The facility, located in the city’s Nankang district, mainly engaged in the manufacture of bias tyres and passenger car radials, ceased production in February 2008. The site will be redeveloped according to a Tapei municipal urban redevelopment plan.
Approximately £90 million is said to be earmarked for Qingdao Yellow Sea Rubber to assist it move production to a new facility. This money is to come from controlling company China National Chemical Corporation (ChemChina), and the move of production from its headquarters to an industrial park will allow an increase of all-steel radial capacity to 1.8 million units per annum in 2008, and when its semi-steel radial production moves later the overall annual capacity in the facility will be 3 million units. Additional all steel and semi-steel capacity will be added, with all construction expected to be completed by the end of next year.
Pirelli Tyre has announced an increase in car and truck tyre prices for European customers. The price increases will vary between four and six per cent, according to market and product, and will take place in the second quarter of 2008. In announcing the increases Pirelli indicated that energy and raw material costs were the deciding factor behind the price rises.
Operations at Cabot Corporation’s carbon black facility in West Virginia, US, ended on the last day of March, the company reports. The upcoming closure of the Waverly plant was first announced in June 2007, at which time Cabot stated that changes in the tyre manufacturing industry were the predominant factor behind the decision. The company has engaged in significant restructuring measures in the past two years in response to diminishing tyre output and capacity in North America and expansions to facilities in China, the Asia Pacific region and South America.
The Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber Company can trace its history back to 1958 and today the group produces a wide range of products. These include tyres for two-wheel vehicles and bicycles, passenger car tyres (bias and radial), truck and bus tyres (bias and radial), light truck tyres, industrial, solid and skidsteer tyres, agricultural and OTR tyres. In addition to tyres, the company’s product range includes rubber crawlers, belts, hoses and miscellaneous rubber products.
Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber Company has grown steadily over the past half century and is now one of China’s top 500 enterprises. The products are widely exported and the brand names – Tartu, Chao Yang, Goodride and Westlake – have become increasingly familiar to the tyre industry (and to motorists) outside their home country.
Intyre is a tyre wholesale company that specialises in the export of used tyres. Situated in the centre of Belgium, near the well-known export and shipping centre of Antwerp, the company mainly deals with used car and truck tyres. Unlike other casing and used tyre companies, Intyre does not collect tyres from fitting stations and other dealers, but only buys tyres that can be ‘reused.’ “In this way we try to avoid stocking scrap tyres. We usually inspect the tyres at the supplier’s place and bring them to one of our warehouses where they are sorted by quality and size,” the company told T&A. Intyre has a 4600m² warehouse and a yard of about 8000m². “We usually distinguish two qualities for two different markets. Firstly there are the high-quality used tyres which are sold mainly in Europe. Our second outlet is the African and South American market, which mainly imports the cheaper second hand tyres,” company representatives concluded.
Eldan Recycling A/S has been supplying plant and machinery to the Recycling Industry worldwide for more than 50 years. The company specialises in machinery aimed at the tyre business, but also helps with this disposal of Dry and Jelly Cable Scrap; Rejected Die Cast Magnesium; Aluminium Scrap; and Waste Electronic and Electric Equipment (WEEE).
TVS Srichakra, the number one motorcycle tyre maker in India, is focussing on promoting its “large programme of off-the-road (OTR) tyres for the export market” at this year’s Reifen Essen exhibition. The Indian manufacturer describes itself as a global player due to its distribution networks in Europe and USA; and major OEM accounts in Europe. In total the company and exports to over 55 countries in all the six continents. TVS Srichakra, with its “Eurogrip” programme for overseas markets, offers a wide range of off-high way applications, covering in excess of 400 stock keeping units.
