Magna Tyres Goes Down Under

Netherlands-based OTR tyre producer Magna Group has entered the Australian earthmoving tyre market with the arrival of Magna Tyres Australia in partnership with ADG Global Supply Pty Ltd. What is clear is that Magna Tyres is set to provide the market with a new alternative to the big three tyre makers. And this is a significant change because this market reportedly has not seen any new competitors in decades. The official Australian launch was held today (15 September 2010) in Perth, with numerous tyres on display and the opportunity to meet the founders of the Magna Group from The Netherlands. The launch of Magna’s OTR and industrial tyre range is accompanied by the construction of a new website – www.magnatyres.com.au.

Viking Implements New Online Ordering Service

Viking International reports that its online ordering service is “now even easier” with the addition of credit card processing. An account management area enables customers to view order history, statements and invoices to help keep track of their account. A new feature allowing customers to pay by credit or debit card will be available from 1 October.

Mitas Considering $50 million Investment in Czech Republic

Mitas a.s. has reportedly signed a “Declaration of Understanding” to build a new tyre production plant in the Czech Zlín Region, an essential step for the realization of the project. Contracts are said to be being drawn up currently. Mitas, a division of Czech Rubber Group CGS Tyres, is reportedly planning a 1 billion Czech koruny (£34 million, 40.65 million euros, US$53.73 million) investment in the Holešov Industrial Zone in the Czech Republic.

According to a Holešov Industrial Zone statement, the company is planning to build the plant at the end of next year and it will be fully operating in 2014. The site is expected to employ 500-550 people. The new factory will reportedly require 6.5 hectares of land, with the option for another 6 hectares. Mitas plans to produce mainly tyres agricultural tyres in Holešov. It has found several suitable places for realization of its intention, and finally it has been decided for Holešov.

Watts Tyre Group Passes ISO 14001 Assessment

In the past year Watts Tyre Group has attained the new ISO 9001:2008 standard and renewed its Approved Supplier status from Toyota Industrial Equipment SA, and now the UK based industrial tyre and wheel producer reports it has again passed the ongoing assessment for ISO 14001:2004 and its Environmental Management system. In announcing this latest achievement, company CEO Jean-Paul Mindermann commented “our quality accreditations are very important to us as a business and we are delighted that we continue to keep our standards high. As a key supplier to the world’s leading materials handling manufacturers it is vital for us to ensure that the quality of our products and processes is world class.

Lanxess Evaluating Feasibility of Asian Nd-PBR Plant

Germany’s Lanxess AG reports it is evaluating viability of building a new neodymium polybutadiene rubber facility in Asia. The company has already taken steps to increase its capacity for producing the substance, an essential ingredient in the manufacture of high performance tyres, at its plants in Germany, Brazil and the US. The decision to expand capacity at existing plants was made in order to meet demand in the “green tyre” market, which Lanxess notes has an annual global growth rate of about 9.0 per cent, making it the industry’s fastest growing segment. A study into the feasibility of a 100,000 to 150,000 tonne per annum Nd-PBR plant in Asia is currently underway, and Lanxess says a final decision on the project will be made within the next six months.

FIA Accepts Michelin WRC Tyre Supply Bid

On September 14 Michelin gave confirmation that the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) has accepted Michelin’s application to supply tyres for the World Rally Championship from 2011 onwards. Michelin will thus return to the championship following a six year absence and supply its partners with Michelin brand rally tyres. The French manufacturer chose to apply for WRC tyre supply following the FIA’s decision to open the championship to more than one tyre manufacturer and by the likelihood of a change in regulations.

Bridgestone Europe Announces Management Changes

A number of senior management changes are scheduled to take effect at Bridgestone Europe on October 1. Yuji Takeuchi, chairman and former senior vice president of Sales & Marketing, and Yasuhiko Tanokashira will both return to positions in Japan. Mitsuhira (Mike) Shimazaki will join the Bridgestone Europe management group as senior vice president Business Operations. This latest posting will be Shimazaki’s third assignment to Europe.

Brembo Plans Brake Plant in Czech Republic

Italian brake product maker Brembo has announced plans to build a new production plant in the Czech Republic. The three-year, 35 million euro project will start operations in 2011. The project included rehabilitating an existing industrial building in the city of Ostrava, Brembo said.

Pirelli to Talk Possibilities with Heidfeld

Sauber Motorsport has confirmed the signing of Pirelli F1 test driver Nick Heidfeld. The 33-year old German driver’s contract with the racing team comes into effect on September 17 and, thanking Peter Sauber for putting faith in him, Heidfeld said he was “looking forward like crazy” to racing in Formula One again from the Singapore Grand Prix onwards.

Adama Seeking EU Funds for Romania Tyre Recycling Project

On September 13 Israel based clean tech company Adama Technologies Corporation announced the signing of a Letter of Intent with entrepreneurs in Romania to establish a series of tyre recycling facilities. The company anticipates the establishment of these plants will be partially facilitated through European Union and local government funding. Expected annual revenues from this new project are in excess of 100 million euros.

India to “Sort Out” Rubber, Tyre Duty Inequality

India’s government may be set to rectify the disparity between duties charged on natural rubber and imported tyres. The Press Trust of India reports that commerce secretary Dr Rahul Khullar told journalists on the sidelines of a Confederation of Indian Industry event to “give me a month's time, we are trying to sort out the problem of inverted duty structure."

Cooper Tire Plant Marks Safety Achievement

Cooper Tire’s Tupelo factory in the US state of Mississippi has achieved a million man-hours without recording a single lost time injury. The tyre maker states this milestone “demonstrates the company's commitment to the highest standards of safety performance and its desire to create a safer working environment.”

Hankook’s Suh to Give Keynote Address at US Conference

Hankook Tire vice chairman and CEO Seung Hwa Suh is scheduled to present a keynote speech at a conference organised by Ohio, USA based organisation Tire Society. The September 20 address on the opening day of the 29th Annual Business Meeting and Conference on Tire Science and Technology is titled ‘Tire Industry Opportunities and Challenges’, and the Tire Society reports that Suh will highlight current opportunities and challenges facing the tyre industry along with ways to improve and adapt technologies for a changing market. Suh will also suggest a future guidance for tyre companies with emphasis on fuel and economic efficiency as well as the eco-friendly trend.

Pirelli Prices Rise in Europe

Prices for Pirelli consumer tyres in European markets will increase on October 1. The Italian manufacturer says prices for its entire car, 4×4 and light truck range in all markets will rise by four per cent. Industrial tyre prices have also increased by up to six per cent; these changes came into effect in early September.

Heidfeld Leaves Pirelli to Race for Sauber in Last 5 GPs

Nick Heidfeld has rejoined the ranks of racing Formula One drivers, replacing veteran Pedro De la Rosa at Sauber. Heidfeld has completed two full tests with Pirelli on the manufacturer’s new Formula One tyres after leaving the Mercedes GP team and had been thought to be continuing the testing process with the 2011 tyre supplier, but according to reports on the BBC’s website, he has “extricated himself from those commitments”. Sauber’s principal Peter Sauber has not commented on why De la Rosa left, or the signing of Heidfeld.
