Up to 15,000 tonnes of tyres in Yorkshire fire

North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service published this photo of the blaze

North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service has spent the past day dealing with a fire at Newgen Recycling’s Sherburn-in-Elmet site in Leeds, and estimates that up to 15,000 tonnes of tyres may be involved. It initially estimated the presence of 1,000 tonnes of tyres.

The Environment Agency and North Yorkshire Police are working together with North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service on various aspects of the incident, and after attending the scene overnight the fire service presence is being scaled down this morning. The fire will be allowed to burn out under supervision.

A photo taken by a NASA satellite apparently shows a column of dark smoke rising into the sky above the clouds over Yorkshire and the north of England.
