Another member of the elite classic tyre fraternity is North Hants Tyres, which was founded in 1948 when company founder John Pettifor senior realised that there was a market for tyres and second hand spare items that were hard to obtain in the post-war Britain.
Hankook Tire Canada has a new home. The company moved into a new headquarters building and primary warehouse in January, shifting from its former home in Mississauga, Ontario, to a 120,000-square-foot facility in nearby Brampton, Ontario.
The new facility will continue to service tyre dealers in Ontario, using independent distributors to handle dealers in other parts of the country. (Tire Review/Akron)
A former Police inspector faces a year in prison for his role in the dumping of 175,000 tyres. Geraint Evans, who retired from the Police in 2005, was one of three people sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court on April 8 for illegally disposing of tyres at sites in England and Wales. Also sentenced were Norman Cassidy, who received an eight-month prison sentence, and Evans’ partner Marilyn Hanks, who has been ordered to perform 240 hours of community service.
“You are thoroughly unscrupulous men with no regard whatsoever for the financial consequences of those you exploit,” commented Judge Stephen Hopkins QC, referring to Evans and Cassidy. “You were deliberately dealing in waste without a licence for purely financial reason and it’s had a substantial impact on the community.”
Continental Tire North America’s ContiBusinessCouncil, formed in 2004 to serve as a liaison between the company and its dealers, recently met in Huntington Beach, California, in conjunction with Continental’s launch of the new ExtremeContact tyre lines. “The feedback we receive from the Council has been an integral part of our strategy-building as well as our decision-making processes,” said Andreas Gerstenberger, executive vice president of sales and marketing for CTNA. “The council meets once a year, and also actively contributes throughout the year, and its suggestions have driven many of the key initiatives that Continental has executed and will implement in the future.” (Tire Review/Akron)

R H Claydon has announced that it has relocated its Scunthorpe wholesale warehouse operation. R H Cladon has occupied a location in the Flixborough Industrial Estate since 1990 and has now “well out grown the site [and] moved to a larger location on the same industrial park.” The new branch occupies some 43,000 square feet and is served by a newly built loading bay to handle container traffic. This warehouse will better serve an expanded area that runs from the East Midlands north and east to the Scottish Border.
The location is said to have a larger holding capacity that will initially serve five delivery vans. This and the company’s other sales and service branches (at Bury St Edmunds, Swindon, Stockport and Falkirk) stock passenger, van, 4X4, light and heavy truck, agricultural, construction, industrial, small implement, Turf and ATV tyres – not to mention tubes and more.
Alliance Tire USA has opened a new warehouse in Portland, Tennessee, near Nashville. The new facility, said Alliance, is along the I-40 and I-65 corridor, and “allows us to easily send tyres to customers in any direction.”
“We are loading the warehouse right now with container loads of farm, forestry and industrial tyres,” says Manny Cicero, president of Alliance Tire USA. “We are now able to stockpile many of our most popular designs and sizes. Keeping key tyres in inventory helps us maintain ‘safety stock’ for our OE customers, and it helps us support our distributors around the country. Especially in these days where credit is tight and distributors are pulling back on investing in inventory, Alliance is committing money and product to the market to shorten the supply chain and to ensure product is available where and when needed.” (Tire Review/Akron)
Kumho Tires recently opened a new tyre warehouse in the US, the seventh it operates in this market. Based in New Jersey, the 150,000 square foot facility will provide storage space for up to 225,000 tyres and support distribution and dealer partners in ten states.
Bike Tyrestore is once again exhibiting at the Motorcycle Trade Expo at Birmingham’s NEC on 18 -20 January. Company managing director, Peter Smith, told Tyres & Accessories that the company is confident it can repeat last year’s successful growth in sales to the motorcycle tyre trade in 2009. On show with its major partners, Bridgestone, Michelin and Sava, BTS will be demonstrating “YOUR Online Warehouse”, the company’s on-line enquiry and order service and Customer Loyalty Rewards programme “Moto-Vate”, which has just concluded a unique deal with the Ron Haslam Race School. BTS won “Best Trade Service” award last year and is known for having the friendliest Customer Service Team in the business.
Tire Group International has today (5 January 2009) launched its new online ordering system. The launch is being described as the final step in a two-year long programme of Improvements to the company’s existing system, which have included the implementation of a fully operational warehouse management system (WMS) integrated to a new back-office ERP system.
TGI partnered with Radiant Software Solutions to tailor a complete software solution for all of its needs, allowing TGI to increase sales in 2008 by over 20 per cent without any additional employees. The technology has also helped the company become more ecologically friendly and is now virtually paperless.
An Arkansas, US warehouse containing 100,000 tyres and used by Cooper Tire has caught fire. The frame of the 200,000 square foot warehouse is said to have collapsed and fire spread throughout the building. The fire is believed not to have spread to other buildings or a nearby forested area.
The Philippine government’s Presidential Anti-Smuggling Group (PASG) has raided a warehouse on the northern island of Luzon, seizing some 10 million peso (£133,500) of counterfeit tyres and motorcycle spare parts. According to a PASG statement, the agencies raided the warehouse after receiving surveillance reports indicating the illegal nature of the activities within. The tyres confiscated from the warehouse are said to have been counterfeit Dunlop tyres.
Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. has leased a 362,000-square-foot warehouse area in Allentown, Pa. The warehouse area, according to reports, will serve as a tyre distribution centre. Earlier this year, Cooper said that it was reconfiguring its distribution centre alignment. The warehouse space is being leased from AMB Property Corp. (Tire Review/Akron)
Bridgestone Metalpha U.S.A., Inc. (BMU), a subsidiary of Bridgestone Americas Holding, Inc., announced on August 11 that Donna Bright has been promoted to plant manager of the BMU radial steel cord manufacturing facility in Clarksville, Tennessee. With the promotion, effective August 16, Bright becomes the first female plant manager at any Bridgestone Americas facility.
Grouptyre has launched a new website, which is designed to reflect its new corporate identity. “While it’s important to ensure our website promotes the new-look Grouptyre, we have also taken the opportunity to develop certain aspects of the site to provide greater functionality and are now confident it will prove a useful resource for all our customer groups,” said director of commercial operations Karl Naylor.
The website has now added profiles of all Grouptyre’s suppliers – including all the premium brands, a wide range of budget brands and some carefully selected exclusive brands – plus links to the manufacturers’ own websites. There is also information on, and a link to, the Grouptyre ‘virtual warehouse’ Grouplink, which gives independent tyre retailers and garages desktop access to a wealth of product and stockholding information.
