Pirelli Promotes Three Vice Presidents
Three managers involved in the growth of Pirelli Tire North America over the past four years were honoured recently with promotion to vice president. Steve Carpino has been named head of R&D and product development; John Hagan is in charge of original equipment; and Andrew Kearton is responsible for manufacturing.

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has named Johann Finkelmeier vice president and general manager of original equipment tyres in the companys North American tyre unit. Finkelmeier will report to Larry Mason, Goodyears North American president of consumer tyres. Finkelmeier most recently served at Akebono North America as executive vice president, global strategy and business development OE/OES sales. Prior to that post he was president of ThyssenKrupp Steel North America, in Detroit.

Mytyres.co.uk, the Delticom AG owned online retailer, is promoting the use of winter tyres by offering products priced as low as £18.10 per tyre. While it is not clear exactly which product is priced at this level, Delticom’s house brand is Star Performer produced by Nankang. Delticom published details of the promotion in a recent email which also included consumer information on air pressure and irregular wear advice. It even recommended a tread depth of at least 4mm for ideal tread depth.

Michelin North America (Canada) Inc. has reached a significant milestone in Nova Scotia with the celebration of 35 years of manufacturing. It was back in 1971 when the Pictou County facility produced its first tyre and the Bridgewater plant its first steel cord product. Two years later, Bridgewater produced its first passenger tyre. Then, in 1982 Michelin Waterville began producing tyres for the heavy-weight market.

Kumho Tires has announced that it has developed an ultra-large tyre with a 32 inch rim diameter for the SUV (sports utility vehicle) conversion market. The 305/25R32 size tyre is claimed to be the world’s first ultra-large UHP (ultra-high performance) tyre and extends the boundaries of the SUV conversion market still further.

Kumho Tires Co. has begun construction on a tyre plant in Vietnam in a bid to corner the fast-growing Southeast Asian market. The company said it would invest US$155 million into the new plant in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnams economic hub, by early 2008. Kumho plans to increase its annual output by 3.15 million units through the investment. The company currently has a total global production capacity of 51 million units.
