UK ‘sleepwalking’ into used tyre crisis, warns TRA
9th September 2025In light of market pressures and recent recycling plant closures in the plastics sector, the Tyre Recovery Association (TRA) warns that the UK’s tyre recycling industry may experience a similar collapse if reforms are not forthcoming. The TRA notes that plastics industry insiders point to a lack of level playing field as a driver of these closures and considers this a core issue that also undermines the “significant but underutilised used tyre processing capacity” within the UK.

Three Hankook products made the podium in the 2025 WhatTyre Tyre of the Year Awards, featured in the WhatTyre Buyers Guide 2025. The fifth consecutive year of the prestigious awards highlighted the top tyres on the market across nine different categories, using the site’s proprietary Tyrescore algorithm and its experienced panel of tyre business editors to help identify the best available tyres. And by 2030, this figure is expected to rise to “at least 40 per cent”. The focus is on rubber and resins from various more sustainable sources. Both materials are essential for the quality and performance characteristics of tyres.
