
Hankook signs 5-year agreement with Vaculug retreading business in UK and Ireland
Hankook has signed a five-year agreement to produce Hankook Alphatread retreaded tyres in the UK. The tyre manufacturer wants to expand the Alphatread brand as part of its commercial vehicle tyre strategy. Vaculug is one of Europe’s largest independent retread producers, and first became Hankooks retreading partner in the UK in 2018. The retreader will also work with Hankook products as a premium fitment for all its fleets.

New Kraiburg K738 the “perfect solution for mixed applications”
Kraiburg Austria is expanding its portfolio for construction site applications with the K738, a tread it says is equally at home on the road. With the K738, Kraiburg Austria has found the “optimal solution” for two tasks. The retreading materials specialist says the tread is “designed for the toughest off-road applications” and its durability, traction and resilience “convinces on rough, unsurfaced terrain.” At the same time, it offers “smooth, quiet running characteristics on sealed roads, including high mileage.”

World’s fastest: Zeiss launches ’55 second’ tyre inspection machine
Zeiss says its latest shearographic tyre inspection system is the “fastest single machine in the world” for inspecting new and retreaded tyres. The optics and optoelectronics specialist introduced the Zeiss Intact 1360-X in April with the promise of a fast return on investment for purchasers thanks to its “drastic savings for labour costs.” The 1360-X can inspect a complete tyre from bead to bead for separations and air bubbles as well as foreign objects in just 55 seconds, including loading and unloading.

UK government blocks Russian and Belarussian tyre, rubber product imports with 35% tariff increase
On 25 April 2022, the UK Government announced a further tranche of trade sanctions against Russia. The new sanctions, which were introduced by International Trade Secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan and Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak, include import bans on silver, wood and high-end products like caviar. At the same time, the government has raised tariffs by 35 percentage points on items from Russia and Belarus, including diamonds and “rubber products”. Additional duties of 35 per cent were already introduced on “new pneumatic tyres, of rubber” on 25 March 2022.

Michelin halts Russian tyre manufacturing and exports to Russia
The Michelin Group has announced that is suspending all its “industrial activity” in Russia as well as suspending its exports to Russia. Michelin’s Davydovo tyre production plant near Moscow employs about 750 people and manufactures passenger car tyres and retreaded truck tyres. According to a statement from Michelin released on 15 March 2022, the Davydovo site’s production is “mainly for the local market”.

EcoVadis assessed the retreading materials supplier’s Nova Prata facilities, awarding it an additional two points versus its Silver-certificated inspection n 2019. Vipal said the sustainability of its operations, extending beyond the environment to focus on people too.
