Toyo Tire & Rubber Co officially “broke ground” this week for its new manufacturing plant and warehousing facility in Bartow County, Georgia. State officials and local dignitaries witnessed the event which marks the official start of construction of the company’s first wholly owned North American tyre manufacturing facility. The 1.03 million square feet building will be built on a 150-acre site and will initially be able to produce 2 million passenger, light truck and SUV tyres annually. Toyo has invested $150 million into the products so far.

The AFX financial news agency has reported that Pirelli will increase its prices by between three and five per cent. The price increase is expected to be enforced by the end of the year and will affect all of the company’s Europe wide operations. Exactly how much prices will increase will be decided by each national Pirelli organisation individually. Pirelli says the price hikes are a result of the increasing raw material and energy costs that are affecting the tyre business.

The final round of the MSA British Rallycross Championship to be held at Brands Hatch, 31 October, will see Dermot Carnegie squaring up to the largest Supercar entry of the year. Ireland’s former rally champion Andrew Nesbitt will make his first appearance in the sport and the Ford RS200 Group B car will say farewell to the event. Dermot Carnegie commented: I can go to the final round and be free to race without thinking that a finish in the points is better than winning, that will be fun. And I want to have a go with Andrew Nesbitt, he said. Steve Mundy, Andy Grant and Kevin McCann are eager to end the year on a high, as is Will Gollop who won the first round of the championship but who has been out of action for much of the year after suffering an engine failure in his Ford Focus.

The American Le Mans Series (ALMS) season-ending race, the Audi Sports Car Championships at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca was provided an eventful climax to the season. It was a longer event (4 hours instead of the previous 2 hour 45 minute format) and it was a race that finished in darkness for the first time. It even offered up a smattering of rain during the last hour just to keep the teams and tyres on their toes. But through it all, the consistent driving of Clint Field, Robin Liddell and Rick Sutherland resulted in another P2 class victory for the Pirelli-sponsored Intersport Racing Lola/Judd, the sixth in the nine race series for Intersport, the 7th overall P2 class win for Pirelli and a first place for Pirelli in the coveted ALMS Tire Manufacturers’ Championship in P2.

Sebastién Loeb has become the World Rally Champion following his second place classification in this weekend’s Tour de Course, the French Rally. The win makes him the 10th driver in the sports history to take the title on Michelin tyres. The result was also good news for Citroën, which runs Xsara WRC cars for both Loeb and team mate Carlos Sainz, has retained its title as world manufacturer champions.

The European Commission looks likely to approve the take-over of the German automotive supplier Phoenix AG by competitor Continental “on conditions.“ Although the Commission has not made its decision official, the German newspaper Die Welt quotes informed sources. According to the newspaper, Continental had to agree to “small concessions” that the management had generally expected. “Weve made small concessions (to the EU) and were confident that with this step the deal now will go through,” said Continental chairman, Manfred Wennemer. The EU insisted on the compromise because of the companies’ overlapping product portfolios. No further details of the concessions have been given. The Commission will officially announce its decision in two weeks time.
