Treadways Hires Private Brand Development Manager
(Akron/Tire Review) Treadways Corp. has hired Ed Nini as market development manager for its private brands unit. In his new role, Nini will be responsible for competitive price analysis, market share analysis and coordination, and Treadways’ supplemental pricing programs. Nini is new to the tyre industry and was previously employed with Dow Jones as its senior marketing manager. He will be based at Treadways’ headquarters in East Norriton, Pennsylvania.

Goodyear has taken its Premio franchise to Russia, opening its first store on 10 November. According to a Kommersant report, the company hopes to sign up around a dozen stores in Podolsk, Kalinigrad, Omsk, Rostov, Volgograd and other Russian towns before the end of the year. The establishment phase of the Premio chain is expected to be completed by 2008 Konstantin Alexeev, retail development manager at Goodyear Russia told the newspaper. The company reportedly invests $20,000 to $30,000 in the launch of each store, Alexeev explained. By establishing a retail presence, Goodyear appears to be attempting to catch up with its competitors. Michelin, Bridgestone and Pirelli launched their projects as far back as 1999. Nokian Tyres set up its Vianor chain, while earlier this Autumn Amtel acquired more than 40 having bought out three Moscow retailers - Rosshina, Koleso, Profil.

Amtel-Vredestein’s London IPO has raised $201 million from the sale of 27.1 per cent of its shares, valuing the company at $742 million in total. The total value is less than the $1 billion the company had hoped for, although insiders are said to be pleased with the result. Amtel-Vredestein lowered the price of its initial public offering after some investors shied away from the initial price range. News sources had also reported that the placement looked expensive compared to the $70 million the company got for selling a 12.4 per cent stake to Russia’s Alfa Group and Temasek Holdings, Singapore’s state-owned investment company, in July.

The Environment Agency today launched a new awareness campaign reminding companies, businesses and local mechanics to dispose of waste oil safely and legally or face tough penalties. Under the new Waste Incineration Directive - to be implemented on 28th December 2005 - companies that incinerate waste oils such as, power stations and road stone coaters, must meet strict new environmental regulations. As a result, the price of disposal is expected to increase.

Omitec has released a “comprehensive software update” for its OmiScan hand-held diagnostic tool. This Version 10 update includes updated Citroen and Peugeot applications covering engine management, ABS, Airbag and some Climate Control systems. In addition, Omitec has developed coverage for Renault TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) on Laguna II and login ECM and re-coding functions for VAG (Audi, Seat, Skoda and VW) control units.

Kumho’s ECSTA Performance Centre (EPC) network, which accounts for a significant percentage of its UK tyre sales, has recently formed a dealer council to represent all the centres involved and further the image of Kumho tyres to the consumer. Formed with the full support of Kumho Tyre UK and Micheldever Tyre Services, the national distributor of Kumho tyres, the 11 members of the council have been voted in by the EPC retailers and include a representative of Kumho Tyre and Micheldever.

Rubbersolutions Pty Ltd has announced the “signing and receipt of deposit” for six tyre recycling plants in Mexico with Recycling Planet. All tyre-recycling facilities will incorporate new grinding technology aimed at reducing whole tyres to -80-mesh powder as well as the Patent Pending Tread Stripping machinery recently introduced by Rubbersolutions. This includes the revolutionary new mining tyre tread stripper/cutter. At a recent launch representatives of all major Mexican political parties are reported to have supported the move. Recycling Planet managing director, Mr Alberto Frost commented that the company had conducted “worldwide explorations into tyre recycling equipment and were happy to announce that Rubbersolutions technology had proven to be the most acceptable.” Mr Frost also announced a programme of rapid expansion of tyre recycling facilities throughout Latin America.

Michelin has launched its Alpin, Pilot Alpin and Latitude products on the Bulgarian market. While the Alpin will provide a new winter option for the Bulgarian market and the Pilot Alpin will provide a higher specification winter option, the Latitude SUV tyre is seen as something of a novelty, the Sofia News Agency reported.

While tyres have traditionally been the mainstay of Brityrex, the organisers ECI International are noticing a growing trend towards diversification among exhibitors. Says managing director Paul Farrant: “Our advance bookings for the 2007 event show great interest from equipment manufacturers – and not just tyre changers and balancers, but sophisticated testing and diagnostic equipment, as well as new areas such as air-conditioning servicing.”
