Fire Crews Fight Tyre Blaze
Up to 30 firefighters tackled a large fire involving about 50 tons of tyres at a reclamation yard in Greater Manchester. Crews were sent to deal with the blaze on Corporation Road in Rochdale early on the morning of the 10 June. The blaze spread to a nearby industrial building and a cordon was put in place as a safety precaution because of acetylene cylinders inside. Nobody is believed to have been injured in the fire. Inquiries are establishing how the blaze started.

The Environment Agency continues to investigate after a trailer full of tyres was dumped in the A41 lay-by in Tushingham. The trailer bears Icelands livery but, according to Cheshire Online, was sold to George Simmonds & Son Commercial of Bristol, a trailer dealership, in 2004. An Iceland spokesman told Cheshire Online: ”We no longer sell trailers to them as we have a condition that our livery is removed before the trailer is reused.”

China’s leading rubber exhibition - Tyres & RubberTech China 2006 (organized by China United Rubber Group Corporation) will take place from 20-22 November 2006 at INTEX Shanghai. The trade fair will occupy an exhibition area of 12,000 square metres, signifying a growth of 100 per cent from the 2005 event. More 400 exhibitors and about 8,000 trade visitors are expected to meet at the exhibition.

More than 1000 tyres were lost in a fire that left Tulse Hill Tyres, London, gutted. According to the local Guardian newspaper, 20 people had to be evacuated after the tyre shop and garage caught fire at around 3:00am on 5 June. Fire fighters from West Norwood and Brixton stations took under two hours to get the blaze under control. The cause of the fire is being investigated.

ABAC, which claims to be the UK’s largest supplier of compressors to the tyre industry has released a nitrogen generator that works with most compressed air systems. It uses a molecular sieve system to remove oxygen and from the compressed air to leave 97 per ent pure nitrogen at up to 12 bar (175 psi). “The system gives more consistent tyre pressures and tyres run cooler, cutting the risks of blow-outs;” says the firm’s Nick Poole. “Lower fuel consumption and longer tyre life should mean a medium haulage fleet will get a pay-back in less than six months.”

Figures published last week by the SMMT show truck registrations grew 9.6 per cent for the rolling year, despite the massive distortion caused by the introduction of digital tachographs. If vans and other light commercial vehicles are included in the picture, the rolling year total drops, down 1.4 per cent to 390,202 units, but the total for the month of May is up 1.4 per cent to 31,293.

(Akron/Tire Review) Bridgestone/Firestone North American Tire (BFNAT) is recalling a handful of Firestone brand tyres due to possible innerliner damage. Only 10 Firestone Destination A/T tyres, in size P265/75R16, are being recalled. The tyres were produced between 29 January and 4 February this year. BFNAT said one of the machines used to produce the tyres was improperly set up, leaving a small area of the inside of the tyre with inadequate innerliner coverage.

Bridgestone Europe has announced that work has started on in its Tatabanya, Hungary high-performance passenger and light truck tyre plant. Construction of the about 190 million euro complex is being financed and managed by Bridgestone Hungary Manufacturing Ltd – a newly-formed subsidiary of Bridgestone Europe NV/SA - with completion due at the end of 2007. Production is scheduled to reach more than 8,000 tyres a day by 2009. The company expects to employ more than 200 people by 2009.
